World of Warplanes is a stand alone Free to play game being developed by the team that created the award winning and highly acclaimed game, World of Tanks.

“We are proud to be able to develop another high quality Free to Play game for the world’s gaming community”, said Victor Kislyi, CEO of Wargaming.net. “World of Tanks has been extremely succesful and we look to bring the same high quality if not better to World of Warplanes.”
First they give us World of Tanks to dominate the ground... and then they give us the sky!

Woot? They need to complete their half ass WoT first before thinking about this one, seriously. There are so much thing that need to be fixed and improved. Currently it's still be at, what, 0.6.4?

PC Gamer: World of Warplanes first details

Warplanes will follow a similar free-to-play format tof WoT, with the same “gold, experience” and “economics,” and is set to include planes from “big plane nations” like Russia, Germany, Britain, France, America and Japan.

Kislyi says the team are trying to strike a similar balance to World of Tanks, combining accessible controls with historically accurate World War 2 war machines. This time around, Wargaming.Net are going for a new audience. “It’s important to understand, we want to concentrate this game on air combat enthusiasts,” said Kislyi. “We want to go to air shows. We want to go to air museums. We want to talk to people who fly those hardcore flight simulations.”

Will creating a convincing flight sim be a much harder task than tank warfare? Yes, says Kislyi. “Aeroplanes, everybody knows, you are in 3D, you have to be moving all the time, like a shark, and you have to have 3D vision in your head, unlike tanks. That’s quite a challenge.”

“An aeroplane is more difficult than a tank to control, obviously. There are much more drivers than pilots on this planet. That’s where we put a lot of good people, trying out different controls, different twists in the flight model itself. If you look at the cockpit of any plane, you see a lot of controllers. We don’t want people to be having to switch on all of those.”

Even though they’re courting flight sim fans, accessibility is still a priority for Wargaming.Net. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm about warplanes and World War 2 in Russia , Europe and Britain and America, too. So first it has to be a good simulator, not too hardcore so that it takes you thirty minutes to take off, and then you crash land after a successful mission, and not too arcade-ish.”

“It has to be historically realistic in terms of models, engines, internal components and relative perameters of different aeroplanes and different nations, of course, it has to be well balanced, but the gameplay, the flight mode, the controls, they have to be somewhere inthe middle in that sweet spot so that normal people can play.”

Kislyi also suggests that players will be able to share currency between their games, meaning World of Tanks players will be able to hop over and buy a plane with the gold they’ve earned blowing up Panzers.

“Let’s have mutually acceptable gold, why not?” Kislyi enthuses, “It’s just dollars, or pounds, right? If you have the reserve of gold in your World of Tanks account, you’re going to want to try Warplanes, why don’t you use that money in World of Warplanes? There is nothing against it.”

World of Warplanes is still in internal alpha testing at Wargaming.Net, so we’re not likely to see a beta just yet. In the same interview Kislyi also suggested that Wargaming.Net are thinking seriously about their long term plans beyond World of Tanks and Warplanes, and want to do World of Battleships, too. We’ll have more about the future of World of Tanks and Kislyi’s views on the rise of free-to-play games soon.

I've gotten the beta, and I have to say that it's not as fun as WoT. I don't know if it's due to the controls being really uncooperative, or if planes simply aren't my thing, but it's just not as addicting. Bombing stuff is pretty fun but it seems that there are always players who get to the target before you do, and dogfighting is complete hell, as it usually involves spinning around in confused circles while the enemy eats off little bits of your hp.

Hm, yeah, the idea sounds neat to me.. but I recall when I used to play Battlefield 1942, planes were never really my thing.. That said, a good pilot could cause insane amounts of destruction, but only planes is .. "meh" -- I'm looking forward to see how they include blanes in World of Warships!

I'm actually really excited for this. I like naval combat and I've logged a pretty large amount of time into the Naval Ops series (which is Japanese, hilariously enough). Navy Field is an interesting game along those lines that I tried but it's so very outdated and without any ability to window or fix the resolution the last time I played... No.

As far as World of Warplanes goes, it has a lot of work to be done. If you're into plane sims I don't recommend it. If you like more casual and simple sorts of flying games though you'll probably find some enjoyment in it. It has Bf109s so it must be good right?! Try out for the beta and hope you get lucky. I got in it easily enough right around when it went live.

So I spent the previous week also playing Warplanes again in preparation for this week's event for that 5,000 WoT gold.

So far, my impression of the game is that it's much better now than it was a few months ago, with controls and interfaces being revamped to be more intuitive. This is most especially true of the one thing I had the most gripe with when I first tried out the game: the MKB controls. Previously, MKB was a nightmare where your mouse controlled a cursor that you dragged across the screen, and your aircraft followed it, which made maneuvering a nightmare. Now, the default MKB scheme has the mouse control the aircraft itself, with a secondary cursor that follows the craft denoting where your guns are actually pointing, a system that is much more intuitive and closer to most traditional MKB flight control schemes. This change has greatly improved my enjoyability of the game a lot, since now I don't feel like I'm fighting my mouse when controlling the planes. (You can still access the old control scheme in the options).

The hangar interfaces themselves have also been reworked to be more similar in execution to World of Tanks, rather than previously where it only looked similar to WoT, but had strange quirks that made it unusual.

Currently have 10 aircraft in my hangar, with the Tier V P-40 Warhawk as my highest tier aircraft.

The only issue I have is the fact that there are no server browsers. That would be more useful in general, allowing me to chose where I'd like to pick up a match.
