Because there wasn't proper AC and the summer heat was horrendous, most of the girls were in seriously bad states. Acchan had heat stroke, hyperventilated, was carried out on stretchers, and even need oxygen tank so she can breath but she even insisted on coming back to finish Flying Get performance. Most of the girls dropped behind the scene...
That's not even considering the 10 or something girls that went to the hospital for overwork because they refuse to rest, for fear of dropping in popularity...

So that's why Okada was casted...well she is an AKB fan herself so she would know how to present the girls to evoke empathy from watchers.

The point about music probably explain why there's alot of music related anime show lately lol.

I think Kotaku did a feature on this before. Brian Ashcraft is their Japanese correspondent who actually does some good research. I can't find the article any more for some reason.

He claims that Kashiwagi yuki was making somewhere in the range of 100,000 - 200,000 USD a year as salary for being an idol. If you compare it to any solo act or even acts overseas, this is actually kind of pitiful .

To put it into some sort of context, each member of Arashi earns something like 4 million USD a year as just their salary.

But I guess that's not really a fair comparison. Anything that comes of Johnny's is just ridiculous.

Also, maybe it's just me, but isn't 500,000 USD a really REALLY cheap royalty for what is supposedly one of the most famous acts in Japan?

Basically the kenkyuusei learns the true rigor of Idol training, learn to fight for freedom first. Dance and Sing later.

Anyways now that i found the blog...

Upon Arrival on the planet akibastar, they were immediately greeted by the other AKB0048 members and a lot of hopefuls. However, they also first learned how to fight in combat with training robots, live fire training, and zero g courses. During their time in the Academy, none of the newbies have it easy as Makoto gets her shower sabatoged by some of the older girls. Also Mayuyu is a big eater and the food is pretty good by academy standards.

That night they snuck out after curfew to see the AKB0048 do rehersals and the AKB0048 are very warm towards them unlike the candidates.

And it turns out the Kenkyusei's job is to protect them from DES forces while the idols perform. Things go badly for the idols when the forces attacking were much better equipped and the generic trainees are KIA or too traumatized to continue being idols. Chieri saves Nagisa's bacon in exchange for what happened last episode when she charges to stop an enemy unit. But it turns out the training was mock as well (The missiles are concussive) with the pretense of being an actual operation and these 9 will become the Kenkyuusei who will become aspiring idols.

They may have become the apple of AKB0048's eye but now the real problems have begun, the only two not introduced are Kanata and Mimori.

Also...



And Acchan's disappearance will be the major plot point. And this is definitely for girls with the Esclaflowne factor thrown in.

The episode focuses when Nagisa and her friends participate in a election supervised by Tsubasa, while doing their effort in a mission training against the mechs. Meanwhile, the older AKB0048 stars are making a new concert prior to their arrival at AkibaStar. The next episode will focuse on AKB0048's arrival at AkibaStar and the appearance of two new characters : Mimori and Kanata (this is my own prediction).

Actually they're top 10 even with making 500k. And since they have alot of CMs, it does add up. Last year, top 5 of highest amount of CM contracts are all AKB members with the highest is Yuko at 19 CMs. Their rate increased for this year too so they're earning more than before.

Shinoda Mariko have a different name in this anime, she's Tsubasa..IDK why...
but her role as the producer obviously is because she's consider the mother of AKB members so the task of taking care of the young one fall on her.

With this episode I'm beginning to understand why kirara followed Chieri but didn't shine. It's not that she doesn't have what it takes to make it shine. In fact, she probably has more AKB spirit than anyone else. It's just that she doesn't know to express that.... but that's starting to change in this episode.

Needless to say, this was a good episode, and Chieri is already my favorite character.

The latter half, final test but really a very lopsided test, in which the KKS have to face off with towering mechs! Damn, with only a peashooter of a Kalashnikov clone!

Fortunately, those who were "KIA'd", even Chieri, only got shot with knock-down paintball rounds. Yet, I don't know what to make out of those who were hit with high explosive bombs... They'll wake up at the sick bay, anyway.

Okada really pulled off this one, what a surprise. MORE ACTION PLEASE!

Btw, can I just add that the whole "Unfinished product" concept is what makes these girls so attractive as entertainers? It's quite boring to watch our western finished product entertainers and singers at times, because all they are is an unreachable goal. The whole "anyone can make it if they work their butts off" concept is quite inspiring, which is obviously what they were going for. I wonder if a similar concept over here would inspire more people to go after what they want to be instead of accepting who they are right now because society says so. I live in a society that's really restricted in that regard (UK), so I wonder..
That said, Morning Musume actually does this to a much greater extend than AKB, who does take people with some background, whereas the former purposefully takes girls who have literally zero experience like Suzuki Kanon.
I get the impression that most AKB members have some experience or at least know what they want to do in the future/ what they want to get from this and are thus a bit more focussed than a pure "idol made from scratch" concept.
Which is good, since they're actually in this to build a future for themselves.
