There's HotD and then... there's nothing else. (Or maybe those 3DCG Resident Evil movies count for you.)
You can find stuff with similar situations, but you'll have to compromise: give up on the zombies and redefine everything else about HotD and you'll maybe find something. Maybe Gantz or Shingeki no Kyojin. Or keep the zombies and replace the survival part with cute girls, then you'll get Gakkou Gurashi. I guess technically there is Gyo, but it's an awful anime. Recommended way of watching is together with friends and alcohol. Oh, and there's Koutetsujou no Kabaneri which is a weird Steampunk take on the zombie apocalypse. Animation is really good, but they should've gone for comedy like HotD instead of taking it seriously and then failing horribly at that.

Yeah, funnily enough it's really difficult to think of a zombie anime of the "classic" thriller kind. There's plenty of "zombie-like" anime but not quite zombie.
Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress - Probably the closest you'll get but with a steam punk setting. Gyo is a "zombie-like" survival thriller but with fish and sea creatures (I actually liked it fwiw). Attack on Titan is also a "zombie-like" survival thriller except the "zombies" are giants. There's also Empire Of Corpses, which has zombies but there's no "survival thriller" to it.

Yeah, was gonna suggest Koutetsujou no Kabaneri. I wouldn't recommend it in a vacuum based on quality, but it does come pretty close to the OP request. And there are decent moments, especially in the first few episodes.
