Series with a passive hero

I was wondering if there are any good series where the hero has a big problem with being exceptionally passive/peaceful. The sort of guy whose first thought is to try and avoid a fight, out of fear, pacifistic convictions or any mix of reasons. Shouldn't be an absolute pacifist; the guy should realize that there are times when it's necessary to fight, even though he has trouble doing so. Weakness and lack of confidence in his ability to make a difference are also acceptable as reasons. The difficulty fighting should be something that takes a while to overcome, not one of those things where it takes a couple episodes/chapters to become a fierce fighter. Anime and manga are welcome, but extra bonus if there's a light novel available in the States.

It's about a guy that wants an easy life and thus enrolls in the army. Through a mishap he ends up becoming the captain of a space ship. From there he does pretty much everything to avoid work, which involves avoiding fighting.

Shin Seiki Evangelion
It's a show about piloting giant mechas to kill space aliens. The protagonist is kind of a wuss about it, though.

Bokurano
15 children find a strange old man in a cave on a beach. They end up taking turns fighting in a Godzilla sized mecha. One of the kids - the fat kid - is kind of a pacifist and wins one battle without making a move against the enemy. Also, this is kind of a heavy show, were people you may or may not care about die without resurrecting later on.

Trigun
There's this walking disaster that got a bounty on his head. He really makes an effort not to fight anyone, but somehow every city still ends up destroyed. Eventually he does fight, but I don't remember why, since the plot didn't make that much sense to begin with.

Rurouni Kenshin
Or the guy that strikes only with the back of his sword. (The side that isn't sharp.) He really dislikes killing, but then, he's a samurai during a time when those guys still were a thing. One of those anime that also have the Shinsengumi in them. For whatever reason they show up in a lot of shows.

Tylor is more flippant than passive. I'm not looking for a guy who's casual and easygoing, or a guy who's ready and willing to fight when it's demanded, but rather someone who has serious qualms about combat, who has real difficulty bringing himself to fight. Could be from cowardice, or an innate hatred of fighting, or something else, but while he knows when he needs to fight he has real, serious trouble actually raising a weapon or fist, much less bringing it down on an enemy.
