I think they did it gracefully by making different timelines between TV & movies. In the TV timeline, Shirley is dead and fans can still argue whether Lelouch is still alive or dead. In Movie timeline, Shirley & Lelouch still live after the end of R2 event. Kinda like the different fate for the characters in Zeta Gundam TV & Movie timelines.

that foxen anime video was very clearly based off of the first version of the summary on tumblr that i posted a day or so after the movie came out. you can tell because "his friend in japan" got multiple details wrong that all have been fixed in my updates to the tumblr summary. pretty pathetic tbh. he should've just claimed he saw a summary on tumblr honestly.

speaking of which, if you first saw the summary when it was first published, you might want to take another look at it. i discovered that jp twitter misrepresented some plot beats and have adjusted the summary accordingly.

It's been a long time so hopefully I still remember how it works.

It seems like Code Theory was pretty much 90% of the way there but ultimately misses a few details. Claiming Lelouch got a Code from Charles was almost right. Lelouch actually got an incomplete Code.

Lelouch really did survive what should have been a mortal wound during Zero Requiem. However, once again this was only almost right. Lelouch survived due to an incomplete Code not a full Code. This meant that additional steps were needed to fully bring Lelouch back rather than him regenerating on the spot.

Did Nunnally really see any visions when she touched Lelouch? I don't think she did but it doesn't really matter that much that she didn't. We already know that Lelouch had a partial Code at this time.

Was Lelouch the cart driver? There is no cart driver in the movie timeline. Oudou changes things so that C.C. is traveling alone after the events of Zero Requiem. For the TV timeline, it might still work out if Lelouch was fully brought back between Zero Requiem and the cart driver scene. Although it would be tougher to recover Lelouch's body since Shirley is dead in the TV timeline but it isn't really impossible.

That's not true at all.
The movie fully contradicts that old theory.
C.C. was musing about it but then mentioned things which dismissed that musing.
She even want as far as saying ...

That means the movie fully contradicted code theory because Lelouch didn't get immortality after Zero Requiem, didn't get the code, wasn't alive and wasn't the cart driver (who doesn't even exist in this universe)

"Lelouch died but could be brought back to life because of an incomplete Code" instead of "Lelouch survived Zero Requiem due to a Code" is one of the differences. It's not a major one, though. The core is that a regular human would have been dead due to Zero Requiem and Lelouch was able to come back to life because of Code shenanigans.

Also to be clear, I never said Lelouch got a full Code from Charles. C.C. explicitly said that Lelouch only got an incomplete Code from Charles and it was because of the incomplete Code that Lelouch could be revived. That was my understanding from the movie, at least.

She literally says she reconstructed him, and when Kallen asks what that means she explains that recontruction is undoing wounds through "back saves in C's World". And later, in the scene with Suzaku, she explained that Lelouch is back alive because SHE wanted that. Lelouch's new power had NO play in any of this, it was all C.C.'s agency. If C.C. had done nothing, Lelouch would have stayed dead forever. No temporary death at all, if not for C.C.

You mean the scene where C.C. and Kallen are talking?

I just rewatched the scene and C.C. doesn't draw a line from Charles' code to Lelouch's body being "reconstructed". She mentions Charles' code and the possibility (her word, so she is unsure) of Lelouch inheriting it, but then continues to contradict that possibility by adding "But Lelouch used a geass afterward". A bit later she says she had Shirley bring Lelouch's body (notice she says "his body" and not just "Lelouch") to her and AFTER THAT (her words) she reconstructed him. Kallen asks what reconstructing means and C.C. explains that it is replacing damaged body parts. So the healing of Lelouch happened long after his death and was done by C.C. and not on its own. C.C. then finally draws a line to C's World being in bad shape, but she doesn't say she could resurrect Lelouch because of that, she says the condition of C's World makes it difficult for her to enter it.

Well, Zeta tends to be different. From what I remember Tomino once said he overdid the violence in his works to the point he wanted to retcon Kamille's mindrape in the movie. Something similar happens to that girl from Char's Counterattack in an OVA which generated a reboot in regards to Hathaway.

In an interview, the Sunrise staff did say they revived Lelouch just because they need an idea for a sequel. You can read it here in Japanese.
