I'll suggest two shows written by Nakamura Kazuke, the currently airing Kill la Kill and Oh! Edo Rocket, based on a stage play he had written previously. Both can be hilariously funny, yet both concern serious subjects, political and artistic repression in the case of Rocket, and conformity and fascism in Kill la Kill.
Another take on repression appears in the guise of a show about idol singers based on the real-life group AKB48. The anime, AKB0048, is set in the far future where idols stage guerrilla concerts that include fights against the galactic military.

Those are some classics. I think I get what you want. Here are several that mix those elements (though with different weights). I've included links to openings/clips that are a good sneak peak.
Full Metal Panic! (known to appeal to American fans especially) Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Hataraku Maou-sama Ben-To Angel Beats Chrome Shelled Regios Soul Eater Koutora-san Shakugan no Shana A Certain Magical Index Familiar of Zero Toradora A Certain Scientific Railgun especially the second season Railgun S. Mirai Nikki Katanagatari Crest of the Stars The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Space Aliens, Time Travlers, and ESPers! Neon Genesis Evangelion obligatory Tenchi Universe Chrono Crusade Read or Die (OVA) Tiger & Bunny Ode to the Silver Age of superheros. The World God Only Knows Hayate the Combat Butler (Parents worse the Ranma's) Baka to Test Martian Successor Nadesico Otome Youkai Zakuro Last Exile I think I've included some older ones missing from other lists in there. That should keep you busy.

Sounds like u should watch slayers. I can't believe u didnt see it already. I can totall recommend the first 3 seasons. It's pretty amazing how much the show accomplishes and changes from season 1 to season 2. Theres an expansion of the slayers world that i could not have predicted from season 1 to season 2. definitely check out the first 2 seasons at least. I can't comment on the 5th season and the 4 th season was iffy.
