Saw this title before but didn't really read it so am pleasantly surprised it got animated.

Anyway, first ep:

The settings and the Kune-Kune creature.....Why am I reminded of Pripyat and Stalker lmao. Or Metro 2033. The urban legends here have also a much more....entertaining twist than the usual angry school or roadside ghost legends commonly found in JP urban culture

A decent start, although I don't think their animation for Sorawo facing the Kune-Kunes really got across the idea of what she was experiencing. Also they changed a bit about the elevator scene: omitting one of the subtler disturbing things while making the others more blatant.

Still, it definitely could be worse, and the creepiness does come across as creepy. I'll stick with this to see how well it does.

They're from the same origin. Stalker was inspired from a novel titled Roadside Picnic, and so was this series.

You should be able to enjoy this series, then, so long as it can hold the tone. The author of the novels is a big fan of Japanese creepypastas and scary urban legends, and everything in this series is based stuff he's found among those.

Kind of weird to hear Kayanon playing a bubbly, girly (gun toting) character. More often than not she's playing the one with the stick up her ass.

I liked the first episode overall and checked out the manga a bit so I'm cautiously optimistic. More yuri is a good thing as well.

Those transitions to CGI when the girls were walking were jarring. It screamed "cheap". The rest looked pretty good though.

Not much to say about the plot here since the episode didn't provide much context. There's a "reverse" world that can be accessed through randomly placed portals and creepy creatures there. Toriko seems to go there to look for a friend (girlfriend?) as well as to make money, while Sorawo does it because she's bored with life.

Going by the OP, I guess Sorawo's eye turning blue (because of what she saw through the peephole?) and Toriko's hand turning see-through are going to be permanent things. Hiding them from other people shouldn't be too much trouble (contacts and gloves) but I guess they come with side-effects.

Ooh, no wonder. The....aesthetic, I guess? is quite distinctly Russian (you know, Nightwatch series etc)

I think it is nice to have an urban legend anime and in that point, this was interesting to watch, but despite a decent build-up, the conclusion was really... disappointing.
In the first place, the volume of Megane's voice is so small compared to the other sounds, I had a really hard time understanding what she was chanting. Apparently if she looks at it, the other girl can attack it, because... something. *shrug*

I heard someone say that, it wasn't that this anime was interesting, but that the original urban legend was. And that may be true. Hmm...

Also yeah, the occasionally and random CGs are pretty... that...

Not much to say after but it seemed like a nice start. The OP seems to indicate the girls bodies will be permanently affected by their adventures on the other side and they will soon be joined by others.

Think about it as a trick to defeat a video game monster. The trick was simply that somewhat had to look at the thing (without getting their brain completely taken over in the process) while someone else had to attack at the same time. The take away was the Sorao was perceptive enough to figure that out before getting her head completely messed up. And it looks like they got some "upgrades" after beating this one. Maybe they will get other powers after defeating others monster too.

All in all, this looks like a game world to me. Sure, the setting is inspired in urban legends, but the mechanics are definitely game-like.

It's not really that complicated. They're vague existences, so if you're not looking straight at them then they don't really exactly exist, and she's throwing at nothing. If someone's actually looking at it, then it's really there and it can be hit. It's sort of similar to Schrodinger's cat: their existence has to be firmly set through observation.

Or the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who, who become "quantum locked" when you look at them.

Yeah, sounds like Kamen Rider Ryuki but with less Rider powers and more urban legend horrors. Also, the reverse world travelers here won't try to kill each other, right?

I wonder if there is a different trick to every monster / ghost they will encounter.

There wouldn't be much tension if they could all kill them the same way.

Personally, for me this episode didn't have much tension. The whole thing felt a bit pedestrian and mundane. I'll see how the next episode fairs.

episode 1:

good start. I could feel the fear and excitement.

will be following this show.

looking forward to next week!

_________

edit:

a few more thoughts on the episode.. so the method to defeat a Wiggle-Waggle is someone look at it without averting gaze, that makes it vulnerable to attack from salt or bullets from another person. Hmm, tricky monster.. but looks easy enough once the correct pattern is found. Hunting for mirror cubes to sell for plenty cash... looks like a good business. But still very dangerous.. because those things that try to get into the elevetor, and that blue thing.
