neither of those were THE main character... they were both important characters but not the main.
Light was the main character not L, of death note Simon was the main character not kamina, of TTGL the only time the MAIN character really dies is usually as noted, if it's near the end of the series or death really isn't the end of the character (DB).

Who had the opening POV? Did it remain in their POV throughout the majority of the first episode (and most of the next to boot)? Unless I've messed up, L doesn't appear for a few chapters, and Light has more screen time. Kamina is abit different, but Simon held the POV the most, (if only just), Simon had the 'special' mecha, it was made rather clear that Kamina was nothing without Simon etc. Even in his arc, Kamina was A main character, not THE main character.

it really all depends on how important the character is to the story/plot, and how the change is made, though ultimately, it's very rare for an author to kill his main character before the end
the point is, Touma's story could very well end with volume 22. It already got its ending, and the main plot could work just fine without him, meaning it would be entirely possible for Kamachi to shift the story from "Touma's story" to "Aleister Crowley vs Magic" of course, it is very unlikely that Touma will stay dead for more than a few volumes(i'd say 6-7 volumes, tops, excluding side stories) |

While Touma's coming back I think is pretty much guaranteed what with so many of Aleister's plans revolving around him, and so many dangling plot lines about the IB and whatever else is inside of him, I do have to wonder which direction the author will go into next.
I doubt he could top volume 22, (I mean, it being so awesome that about 80% gets translated in the first few days of it coming out? Never again.) and he no doubt knows that, so he's probably going to take it slow with the next volume, and not do much except do some setting up for the next main arc. |
