It might be. Two aliens in fact, by either side of Kyon. Notice the UFO poster on the window to the left of the screenshot. Spoiler for aliens:

In all honesty, I didn't like this episode that much. Sure it has that Tsuruya scene (who looks way better in that outfit than Mikuru, as it suits her amazingly long hair), but apart from the last minute or two Haruhi seemed liked she had a personality transplant.
We're talking about a girl that extorted not one, but 5 computers out of the computer club here. And all of a sudden she's helping this band who presumably she has never met before... because she symphatizes with them? And without wanting any compensation and to top it all off, being all too humble about it? Sorry, but I just don't believe it. Maybe it was better explained in the novel, but as far as the anime stands, there is no logical reason for her change of heart and no motivation for her doing so. Maybe it would be explained in the next 2 episodes, but considering that most people guess that both would be the continuation of the Yuutsu ark, I highly doubt that this matter would be cleared. While it's certainly one of the more entertaining episodes, it ranks lowest compared to the other episodes just for the unbelievable change (inconsistency?) of the protagoninst. I really would like this ep a bit better, since Kyon has I'm-smitten-with-another-girl-but-I-don't-know-it-yet written all over his face this episode, but alas the show's namesake failed miserably this time for me.

The Haruhi of timeline episode 12 is different from Haruhi of timeline episode 2. People do change. There was several months between the extortion of the Athlon and the band incident, and a lot has happened since then. I guess you are disappointed that Haruhi is not as mean as you want her to be? Regardless, the next two episodes WILL clear up matters. Quote:

Maybe Haruhi is a fan of The Fifth element? Quote:
I agree. She seemed to be a completely different person, and I didn't enjoy this episode as much as the previous episode because of that. Plus it needed more scenes with Fang Girl in them. |

Have you missed what Kyon's influence has had on her? Do you discount her own explanation of why she helped the band? And she exhorted only one computer from the Computer Club, the rest were won in that contest in "The Day of Sagittarius." |

If she didn't change, I think this would be a fairly average story. Watching the characters change adds a lot of enjoyment. And considering everything that happens in the time between the beginning and episode 12, not altering personalities would be out-of-character. |

Remember the true/Haruhi order of the anime series.
We have: Episode 09 : Remote Island Syndrome I Episode 10 : Remote Island Syndrome II Episode 11 : ??? Episode 12 : Live A Live Episode 13 : Day of Sagittarius Episode 14 : Someday In The Rain The true episode 11 has not yet been shown. I'm fully confident we would see more of Haruhi's character development in the final episode to end The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya season one. So far, the anime has proven pretty consistent. For example, during Mysterique Signs (the true Episode 08), when Emiri Kimodori (the purported girlfriend of the Computer Society President) said her "boyfriend" family lives overseas, Haruhi responded by asking whether they are living in Canada. Some people believe Canada is used because Ka-Na-Da is easy to pronounced in Japanese, but we begin to see that in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya IV (the true Episode 04), Canada is the place of mysterious disappearances of family members, where Ryoko Asakura's father had purportedly transferred to. |

Great episode. It still seems though Haruhi only feels comfortable around Kyon as can be seen when she forced Kyon to "escort" her when she was talking with the band members.

Haruhi is human afterall. I would agree that if a protagonist would have a static personality, and would not grow as the plot progresses, then the story would be a bust. As you can see, the anime explained Haruhi's change eversince the start of the series (Yuuutsu I), and not necessarily the chronological order.
Yuutsu I showed her initial personality (brash, antisocial, manipulative). Yuutsu II showed a little change (she is actually capable of jealousy) Boredom showed another change (first time she showed her mellow side to Kyon towards the end of that episode) Lone Island I showed that she is quite normal too (beach scenes). Lone Island II showed that she cares for her comrades. Someday in the Rain showed a lot of her mellow side. etc, etc. I could go on and on about the changes in Haruhi while the anime is going, but I'm late for my class @_@ |

Actually, Yuki's exact words (according to the fansubbers) is "The emergence of self-awareness among the universe's maldistributed organic life forms was a common phenomenon. However, Terrestial humans were the first instance of evolution to a higher order of intelligence". It is clear from what she said that there are other intelligent life forms (aliens) in the universe and that reaching this state of self-awareness is already a common phenomenon. Moreover, Yuki's description of our solar system, as well as her description of humans as "bipedal organic life forms", infers a clear sense of organization, and such organization would be meaningless if humans are the only intelligent life form around. In other words, if someone were to describe it as "short red pencil", one would naturally infer that a "long red pencil" or a "short blue pencil" also exists. |

I disagree with some others that believe there is no reason for the sudden change. Haruhi herself at the end said why she was like this. She was wondering if the things she had done were meaningless. Everyone thinks about things like that sometime, and maybe Haruhi had been thinking about her actions. When the band needed help she realized that maybe helping others isn't meaningless. There was a reason for her change in mood. She was thinking to much... :P

Hirano Aya is just this impressive, as a singer and a VA. Her real personality and character is so far from Haruhi, when she speaks normally no one can believe she actually voiced Haruhi. Her normal vocie is quite high pitched, her singing voice is a soprano voice, but when she voice acts as Haruhi she's using a deeper tone and when she sings as Haruhi, she's actually singing in alto. That just shows how skilled she is in her singing abilities.
