While some games may not be compatible with newer OS's, the overall library really does just increase for a PC. Consoles now seem to refuse backwards comparability unless you rebuy the games like in the PS4's case.

So, any notable changes that makes the Xbox 720 considerable at all? Also, why did they skip 480?

I think you mean 540 though we still haven't gotten an official name yet...

Notable changes include it no longer being a game console first but rather an all purpose entertainment device.

Which is stupid, because it's like you're paying for an oversized cellphone only with more fees/bills and less convenience. A game console just be that, a game console. Multimedia entertainment devices are what we had/have Nooks, Kindles, and Zunes for.

Every generation is deliberately double the power of the previous. So 360 becomes 720. Moore's law.

8 bit nes, 16 bit SNES and Sega megadrive.

Not really considering how PC OS have to be built around compatibility with variety of hardwares while console can optimize itself based on standard hardware. The key issue is DirectX for the PC which acts as a translator between games and your graphic card while console can bypass using any API because it's all standard hardware especially once developers are proficient enough at building engines that taps directly onto the hardware.

Social integration have never been a resource hog to start with. I wouldn't worry about it bogging the console down. Any latency would probably be due to network issue.

Now let's think abit... what kind of improvement should we expect in this generation?
Well, PS2 was very dominant in that generation hence bigger playerbase and more incentive for developer to produce games for it.

I don't think we ll be getting a big jump for this generation since 4k tv doesn't seem like it ll be the standard just yet. Probably the next big jump for console is when 4k display starts becoming industry standard.

Here's one thing: the ps3 and xbox360 controllers are pretty much identical in terms of control input, but if the rumors about the 720's controller is true then that similarity ends with the next gen.

The PS4 controller now has that touchpad, and the select and start buttons are replaced by the share and options. The 720 controller on the other hand is said to be almost identical to the 360's, and kinect will be included by default.

So the control schemes of the two systems have diverged from the almost identical setups of our current gen. This means devs will have to create two different control schemes for multi-plat games.

Ugh. Always on Internet really blows, don't think I want to shell out $499 for that if it's really true... Also hate Kinect.

It's like they're trying their hardest to push me to just PS4 as my console next gen.

Price: The system will launch at two prices. The standalone model will cost $499. A $299 model, which requires a two-year Xbox LIVE Gold subscription plus an additional $10 a month, will also be released.
So, either $500 up front, or $300 up front and $240 over the course of two years, plus the price of LIVE Gold. They aren't even trying to pretend to be subtle about the latter sucking, are they?

Well, about the same if you buy two years of gold with the $500 model....

But that's a long time to have gold.

Always-On:The next Xbox “must be internet-connected to use.” According to Thurrott, “this is the source of the ‘always on’/'always online’ rumors and isn’t as Draconian as many seem to believe.”
I would love to know how less Draconian they could make it

Well, right off the bat it's $40 more. Given that the base price comparison is $500, that's an 8% price increase.

Now THAT's on-disc (in this case, on-console ) DLC taken to new heights.

Clearly Sony has found a way to brainwash Microsoft's upper management.

500 bucks!? I had read that because the new xbox has a little lower specs and because MS has deep pockets that they're going to try to be very competitive on pricing and make it relatively cheap.

THIS is they're idea of that?

I think they earnestly believe that because XBox as "won" the current gen console wars that they can get away with nearly anything and diehard xbox fans will buy their new console anyway...... which they might. MIGHT.

Yes.

Kinect is now mandatory as it at the very least means every Nextbox 720 Durango owner will have it thus giving developers to develop for it more.

The issue is that multi-plays will just ignore Kinect anyway for the most part as the PS4 will have no such thing nor does the Wii-U.
