Being Kiritsugu is suffering.

EDIT:

I think UFOtable's mistake was to put Kiritsugu's origin story that late in the series, when they could have been used as "breather" episodes in both seasons. Putting them the way they did have broken the flow of the story for me. Thanksfully, we are back into the action in the next ep.

God, watching that happen was painful. I swear, being Kiritsugu is more suffering than being Lancer.

Though, I have to say, I can see many people hating the poor lad even more after seeing that.

I don't hate him, instead, feel sorry for him. Because of his ideal he will kill anyone just to save the masses, regardless if that person is a friend or family.

I wonder what Kiritsugu grieves the most: killing Natalia or allowing Shirley to live and making the island he lived as a kid a zomb... dead apostle paradise.

Let us tell the story of a certain man. The tale of a man who, more than anyone else, believed in his ideals, and was driven to despair by them.
My heaaaaaaaaaaaaart ;_;
I really liked the visual flow of this ep.

Kiritsugu went through a lot in his life.
No wonder he ended up psychologically damaged.
It was a shame about Natalia, but everyone he knows just keep dying.
Guess he was meant to be alone....
Interesting how the story is fixed on him for the past two episodes.
Wonder if they'll do the same for other characters or he's just an exception.

Interesting to see him cry at the end. Being Kiritsugu truly sucks.

Well, Happy Mother's Day Natalia!

This is Kiritsugu's present for you, he's bought a bazooka especially to shoot your plane down! Isn't it sweet?!

Good god, I think ufotable has become cynical like Gen Urobuchi. Maybe it's coincidence, but with all this talk that Ep 18 will flow better if it was Ep 17, I doubt it.

Ah, Kiritsugu really got the rough end at this episode. But at least it properly showed what kind of ideal that Kiritsugu holds.

To be honest, after listening to the preview lines for the next episode, and seeing the next episode title, I can totally see why the Kiritsugu flashback episodes would take place right here.

Of course, I have no real idea about what's really going to happen, and I may just be misinterpreting the preview. We'll see next week.

Am I the only one who thinks the anime does a much better job than the novel in the flashback part? The novel doesn't give me the same emotional impact for some reason.

Really wish they had cut out the scene after he shot the plane down or atleast significantly restricted it.

What makes you say that?

The audience already knows why he shot down the plane so him just stating it like that is redundant. The scene is just so overblown compared to the subtlety prior. We know he thinks of her as family so him crying like that is just an obvious way to get across his emotions to the audience. The term I'm thinking about is it's an example of 'overacting' and I would have preferred them to just hint about the level of emotional chaos going on in his mind.

It must be the BGM, I suppose.
I felt like they hit all the right tones this time.
Also padding out the original plot with new scenes gave us a smooth flow of events.
Speaking of pacing, I think this episode was much better at it than the previous one.

Anyways, I think I realized the director's intention with these flashbacks.
In the novels the narration and internal monologues always gave us perfect clarity of Kiritsugu's trail of thought.

In comparison in the anime we share the same viewpoint as the rest of the characters. We see a cold , bitter and seemingly emotionless man who's just merely step away from being a villain. Kiritsugu is someone whom you have a hard time to understand, especially since he never opens up enough for us to do so.
These flashback episodes probably served as a shock to suddenly see Kiritsugu's personality and actions in a different light.

My only problem is that such a set-up has difficulties to work on a weekly show. Especially when the show has split cours like Fate/Zero.
I guess this is going to be the kind of series that worths marathoning it all in one go.

Flashback in anime outdid the LN one.
Natalia smiled at the end, she wasn't mistaken about Kiritsugu, even though it was quite sad

Though halfway through the episode I expected the plane to fly into World Trade Center (September 11) for some reason

Well, I think it's good to show how much he was breaking down from it, instead of coldly accepting it like everything else, so we know it's all basically an act.
