I always felt that lasers in vanilla obsoleted too fast.

A necessary nerf as in the original game, weapon fragments were the main constraint for your reserach. This means you don't need ANY scientists as unless you play on Superhuman, you won't get enough fragments fast enough to benefit from Laboratories. This is made worse by the fact that 1. You can't sell laser weapons for cash like the old Dos game and and 2. You want to avoid unnecessary research to conserve weapon fragments.

I just wish they simply gave us good reasons to use laser, like making them have more shots per reload, instead of punishing us for getting Plasma fast.

An accuracy bonus for laser weapons could have been a possible boost imo.

The one where we have to air strike a dead fish?

I experienced one of my largest largest troop casualties in that mission. Of course, at the time I was only armed with laser weapons.

But, the singular base defense mission takes the cake when it comes to sheer intensity.

The EXALT versions looks niiiiiiice~. If it weren't for the issue of practicality, I'd stick to using them.

It's red. That is a good reason to use them, until you meet the Muton.

And holy shit at the fishing village. Now I know how they feel when dealing with Zerg rush.

So much for using Council missions to train Rookies! Bombing a dead whale infested with Chrysallids? Yikes. Whats worse, I heard that it's bugged, and some TV Tropes players actually experienced getting all their guys to the evac zone... only for the return to base to reveal that they lost 3/4s of the team. ^^;

Haven't experienced that one, got all of my guys out on that mission, and even got the ending cinematic to play (which you only get if you extract via putting your last soldier into the LZ instead of using the abort command). MECs FTW.

Is actually not exactly a bug...if you move too close to the skyranger it counts as "out of mission zone". Your team must stand on the middle to get lifted.

Also, that mission was a cake walk for me for some reason (on classic). I reloaded only once, no lasers, no plasma, no Gene or Mec mods.

Team comp were 1 Sniper (Major), 1 Assault (Zhang from Slingshot), 2 mid level Assault, 1 Chinese Heavy (Col)-picked up from terror mission, 1 Canadian support dude (Lt).

As soon as I started, I take the left route on the Pier. Killed a few zombies, then kill the 3 Chryalids in the fishing shack with rocket fire.

Then I had the Chinese Assault take a few steps down to the pier and pulled the three Chryalids from the pier.

After that was cleared, bomb the shark that was hanging on top of the pier.

Then via, plank, the Chinese assault went forward to investigate the ship. While the rest of the team double back and waited. When Bradford called for the Airstrike, my Chinese heavy with sprint charge on to the bridge, hit the button, and ran for dear life like a Indiana Jones movie.

The Chryalids didn't even come close. One manage to get into melee range and got sniped from down range then killed by a close combat specialist shotgun-into the chest.

Once he reached the rest of the team, they stood together and fought for the remaining 4 rounds or so before I lifted them all off.

Gangway!

Since story progression in the game appears mainly triggered by research, I deliberately made priority research the last of my priorities (no pun intended) before embarking on several key council missions.

By the time of the fishing village incident, I already had in my squad, 2 heavies, 2 assault, 2 support and 3 MECs as part of my squad selection. All of them sport archangel armor and plasma weaponry. Needless to say, that particular mission was a cake walk. I also discovered that, for your Mech units, snipers are the best troops to augment. Once your snipers reach the rank of colonel, they should all have 115 aim to their name. This meant, once augmented, your Mecs would rarely miss. Their lowest accuracy, as I have observed, is 85%. Put them on overwatch and they will hit about 90% of the targets with more crit than any other configuration.

And since they have flamethrowers to boot... well... poor Chryalids, I actually felt a little sorry for them.

playing Classic EW
Mutons appeared and I still don't have my lasers. (A few days away)
I've cleared Classic EU before, but I don't remember this happening
Did they significantly increase the research cost?

Research time has been slowed down to force you to invest in scientists. So if you ignore labs you will fall behind.

I kinda noticed the delay when I was playing Normal EW
I guess it's even more pronounced on Classic
on another note, I never appreciated Africa's continent bonus until now.
6~ autopsies/interrogations completed in less than a minute. It's a one hit wonder, but Wow

This of course works best if you also capture all aliens ASAP for their research credits. To be honest it felt weird building labs, as workshops were so much more important prior to the expansion.

Just remember, if you interrogate a sectriod, you get a 50% research credit on lazer weapons.

I won

Spoiler:

Classic
Army of 4 run
Talent Roulette + Random Stat Growth
Was thinking about doing Damage Roulette to to make it a very random game, but then I remember the RNG hates me

The new Shivs are overpowered
Really helped me

Maybe one of these days I'll do Classic Ironman, but the enemy wave chain triggers are really bullshit on Classic difficulty

So it looks like there's some spooky things going on in regards to something called ADVENT... which apparently has tons of hints that it could be related to a new XCOM game.

Also, one of the images on the site definitely looks like an XCOM-style map...
