Starcraft 2 Art Panel on WWI 2008

Coverage of Blizzard's Art Panel for Starcraft 2, which focuses on Art Direction. It seems that Blizzard is overhauling many of the unit models, giving them better designs and toning down on the bright colors.

Here's an example with the Terran Viking:

Left = Old model, Right = New model

Some views of the new unit renders can be found here.

It seems apparent that to Blizzard now, 'colour' has become an issue of grave importance

I'm going to (with no basis whatsoever) say Christmas 2009 for SC2.

I think Christmas is a good estimate because they do like to get it near holiday season.

Well either way I ain't holding my breath that's for sure. There's no way we'll be seeing it up on shelves anytime soon (or if they'll even last up there for that matter)

I'm going to say 50% late 2009/early 2010 and 50% late 2010.

The new colours are amazingly better. Much more suited for Starcraft imo.

Are people calling late 2009, 2010 for real or cause of a Blizzard always releases games late bandwagon?

There's no official guess at a release date.

SC2 is already very playable. If it were EA making the game, it'd be out by September or so.

Just look a RA3... in the amount of time it takes Blizzard to flesh out preliminary designs, EA finishes an entire game from design to beta. Of course, EA games are buggy as hell.

Personally, I'd like to say that 2009 release is the earliest possible. The units might be done, but everyone that's played it--and understands it--says that there is a *lot* of balancing to be done. The single player is going to need a lot of work too, and we don't know that much about it yet.

Since we don't even have a scheduled beta yet, it's pretty safe to say we'll be waiting for a while.

I think the reason why SC2 needs so long to make it to the gamers is the game balance. Just look at SC and RA2. SC is pretty balanced, every unit has it's own pros and cons, while RA2 just spam build the basic tank and you win about 80% :/

That seems to be the problem for all of the CNC games, not including Generals.

But yeah, the other thing about Blizzard games is that unit mixing is really important. Not so in CNC.

Also important is that each unit has to have a use no matter where it is in the tech tree. Zerglings are the basic unit, but even in the endgame they are still dangerous if unchecked even in small groups.

StarCraft 2's singleplayer component has been split into 3 games in order to make the game's storyline more epic. Each game has the same multiplayer component, but a different and distinct story mode.

They will not be released all at the same time, but periodically and episodically. You could treat them as expansions, but they're standalone so you won't need the previous one to install the latest one.

Beta keys were handed out as part of the BlizzCon goodie bag, so expect the Beta to come in the near future.
