Maybe its foolish of me but I assumed that the animation in episode 1 was intentional,it gave all the characters a bit of a robotic feel to them and with the whole doll theme going on just contributed to the creepiness.

Would Garden of Sinners count?

It did have horror elements in it, but I hardly would classify KnK as a predominant horror series. Action was its primary element, with mystery and horror being great secondary elements.

When I think of mystery or horror, I think of detective series like Ungo or thriller horror like Shiki. Another is kinda like Shiki in that way, but ofc the two series are different as Shiki had ramped up supernatural elements.

Umineko and Okami Kakushi didn't bomb because they were horror; they bombed because they sucked.

Well, in all seriousness Okami Kakushi I doubt is regarded as 07th expansion's best work, and Umineko... well, a lot of VN readers complained about being a poor adaptation. And even excluding that; DEEEEENN was cheap with the DVD/Bluray features and didn't even offer much in the way of extras, or even bothering to make it look that much better. There's no incentive.... but I think they failed for much severe reasons.

Though I guess Higurashi didn't sell that well either, although it sold better still.

Still, I was hoping that P.A. Works might have gained some brand name loyalty after AnoHana and HSI's success, but Another seems to strongly suggest otherwise.
I bet if it had fan service and Kou was nailing each girl before they died it would sell well. It's sad, really.

Action was not KnK's primary element. Most of the anime is filled with dialogue. There was more horror than action imo.

I think the whole 'sex sells' claim is an urban myth, because it ignores other factors of why a show sells or bombs.

For a show like this, fanservice might have boosted sales a bit, but not enough to truly matter. It certainly wouldn't make sales go through the roof all of a sudden.

You know about that "joke" that people were saying how Angel Beats was a sign that Kyoani will stop doing "Key"-based animes back then? Well... it's less of a fantasy now considering Hisaya (main writer for Kanon and Sola) has combined with PA Works and the director of the Professor Layton movie (which PA also did) to make Tari Tari. Yes, I do know this is just me rabbling on misleading facts since Hisaya is a freelance writer, but I do find it funny how two "ex-Key" writers (Jun Maeda being the other one) are looking away from what many would consider more normal, Kyoani.

But you know, I kinda stopped praising Kyoani ever since they were pigeonholed on doing the same ol' "slice of life" day in and out with those unattractive (imo) chipmunk character designs, so I'm kinda glad another high quality studio like PA got the job. I think it's almost guaranteed we are gonna get top notch scenery porn and character designs (love those concept art). Now hopefully the directing and writing will be of similar quality. Crossing my fingers it won't be a bloody mess like Angel Beats was. Yes PA, I still remember that nasty stain on your resume.

EDIT: Just got notified that Sekiguchi Kanami is doing the character design and is the general animation director who did the designs for True Tears, Canaan and Hanasaku Iroha. Yep, that's almost guaranteed eye candy at its finest. And to the rejoice of -some- people, no Mari Okada to troll you with infuriating shipping, pervy fanservice and recently, excessive melodrama. Despite being a Okada fan and all... I'm actually GLAD she's not in this in her current state. She's in crazy party girl mode with Aquarion EVOL and BRS atm .

EDIT2: *strikeouts and* Looks like Hisaya pulled out... ---->

Hisaya pulled out of what? And why is that bad? Forgive me for not keeping up.

Tari Tari

When the project was first announced (a few months ago), Hisaya was supposed to write the script for the anime. In case you didn't know, Hisaya was the main script writer for Kanon (Key) and sola. So the same production staff that did True Tears and Hanasaku Iroha with an ex-Key writer whose works were less obnoxious and melodramatic than what Jun Maeda did. Hell yeh was I sold... then someone told me the devastating news he pulled out...

Derp. Oh well.

Hisaya was never confirmed to be working on Tari Tari; that was just a rumor since Nagatani revealed the name and concept art of Tari Tari at the same time he announced a project with Hisaya. Hisaya is still working with Nagatani on something. He tweeted yesterday to "wait a little bit longer" for news relating to the new Hanairo work and Hisaya work.

First announcement. It made it sound like it was an "official" announcement:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com.au/n...aring-new-work

But then again, this might have been misleading/false information and I couldn't confirm since I don't know Japanese.

All Nagatani tweeted was that a new Hisaya work was in production and that fans should wait a bit to find out more. Fans on 2ch connected Hisaya and Tani Tani and ANN reported that with a disclaimer saying that there was no confirmation that Tani Tani was that work. It's very likely that Infinte was working on three projects: Tani Tani, the new Hanasaku Iroha work, and the new Hisaya work.

Got ya. Yeah, that would have been an interesting series. True Tears is still the best romance anime in my book, though.

Well, the most recent episode of Another confirms that PA works convinces me that they will fall apart when it really matters at the end. Still could make a nice finale though. The anime had some nice and subtle atmosphere and narrative but I think they tossed it.

The only work of theirs that has ended strongly thus far to me is Hana Saku Iroha. :S

True Tears ended well.

And many series get iffy towards the end. It's how the final episode plays out that matters. I cite Code Geass where how iffy it was then after the final episode it was pure brilliance.

mm, I don't remember how Hana Saku Iroha ended, but it didn't impress me that much as series. Instead I think Another is, even with that 11th episode, a really really good work. Strong narrative and awesome art style (but that's their main quality). Ah, and godly BGM. That genre, with really no action, is hard to execute, even keeping that atmosphere for so many episodes impressed me. The novel is strong, obviously. I hope they will end well now that the crazyness is passed.
I won't say anything about True Tears, because as DragoZERO, it is the best romance anime in my book (and it will for a long time, looking at the direction anime has taken).
I dropped Caanan and disliked Angel Beats. So I love their art style but they have some inconsistencies, don't know if in the direction department or in the writing.

Another is a great series no doubt, but I do disagree that the BGM is godly. They have been rather cheesy at times. However, it is sufficient and it works for the series for the most part so it's definitely not bad by any means.

On a sidenote, I do think the visuals for Another have been somewhat lacking compared to PA's usual standards. Although the background art is as good as ever, and the character designs are decent (I still would have preferred a less moe design since this is a mystery/horror, but hey things have to be moe to sell these days...) they are so many still frames that it sometimes seems like a slidefest show. It reminds of what Fate/Zero was like visually tbh.

True Tears is indeed one of the best romance animes for TV series (not movies though, there's better ones than TT, e.g. Makoto Shinkai movies, Satoshi Kon's Millennium Actress etc).

Canaan was decent for a Type-Moon based work, though it was no ufotable (Kara no Kyoukai, Fate/Zero). Definitely better than DEEN or JC though (Fate/Stay Night, UBW, Tsukihime).

Angel Beats aside from some fantastic visuals and audio just plain sucked. It's plot and pacing is about as messy as the currently airing Guilty Crown. Perhaps it was Jun Maeda's inexperience in writing an anime script (since he only did VN ones prior) or just the fact that Seiji Kishi is a terrible director outside of comedy (and even then I only like Carnival Phantasm out of his works).

Canaan being associated with type moon is still a bit of a reach to me.
Okada came up with her story that didn't have much to do with the game (not to mention type moon was only a minor part of the original 428 game to begin with)

Well it was a sequel to the anime original sequel to the 428 game.

Type moon writers came up for the plot of a bonus scenario of the game. But the basic scenario of the game the anime is a sequel of has nothing to do with type moon.
