Again poor crime plotting on author's part.
"Kid had to dress up as a fat guy to bring all the stolen goods with him?"
What if he did it well ahead of the crime? (as anyone sane would do - the less preparations you leave for the last moment, the less chances something goes awry)

I gotta admit, the tools used in this show are pretty fabulous. Conan managed to figure out who Kid is in that chaos. What a pro.

I'm not sure if this was shown in the episodes, since I only watched fragments of each ep and I have yet to watch them fully, but in the manga version of this case (Detective Conan volume 70 files 2-4) Nakamori is shown ordering his agents to search the museum just in case Kid brought the objects well ahead of the crime: this means that things would have gone awry for Kaito if he already brought the objects in advance, while bringing them at the last moment was the best thing to do. The only thing Kaito did in advance was tampering with the sprinkler's water pressure, since that could only be done in advance, and the probability of the police checking whether the sprinkler's water pressure was tampered or not was very low, as they had no apparent reason to do that.

That said, I am not fond of the idea of anime writers rewriting Detective Conan cases with Kid from Kid's POV: they should just adapt Magic Kaito chapters and leave the DC chapters to the DC animators. I hope this will be the first and last DC case shown in Magic Kaito 1412.

^ They sort of leave that detail out, yes. That said, new watchers might miss some other details regarding the case if you don't read/watch the original Detective Conan version. Really, if anime writers really want to rewrite a Detective Conan chapter into Magic Kaito, they'd better do it a bit more thoroughly.

Ryoma's case itself is not among the most interesting cases, but Phantom Lady's story is pretty connected with it, so I guess the anime writers want to do it in KID's POV. That said if they already wrote Conan into this show already, I doubt this is the last we saw of him.

Now that I remember it, the most flashy KID's heists are not in Magic Kaito. Those go to some of the KID's heists in DC and only when Kaito seriously wants a duel with Conan (the walking-in-the-air and teleportation ones). Wonder if they will try to do those in this show, to show more of these two's equal-footing rivalry.

Speaking of rivalry... Just where the hell is blond half-Brit Hakuba? He only showed up in episode 4 and disappeared ever since. In the manga he is actually the official rival for Kaito and appeared more often, and now it seems like this anime wants to sideline him in favor of Shinichi/Conan.

Or, even better, not rewrite them and just adapt Magic Kaito chapters. Once episode 12 (based on the chapter "Star Wars") will air on December 27, the anime will have reached his midpoint, but we don't know about the content of the last 12 episodes. They still have to adapt the following chapters:

*The Police are Everywhere
*The Ticking Heart
*The Underwater Pirate Ship
*Stay Away From Me
*Japan's Most Irresponsible Leader
*I Am The Master
*The Boy Who Bet on the Ball
*Akako's Delivery Service
*Yaiba vs. Kaito!
*Green Dream
*Crystal Mother
*Red Tear
*Golden Eye (2 chapters)
*Dark Knight (2 chapters)
*Midnight Crow (3 chapters). This is the most recent story, as it was published bewteen October 1 and October 15, 2014, and the first anime episode hinted that they would adapt it (I won't do spoilers here).

So, even if they decide not to animate one or two chapters, they still have enough material to fill the remaining 12 episodes without rewriting other Detective Conan chapters.

True, the 2011 Phantom Lady two-chapter story in Magic Kaito, and especially the last page of the second chapter, is a prequel to the 2010 three-chaptersRyoma story in Detective Conan, but I wish they just left the nod to that case (just like the Clock Tower nod to the Black Star heist) and not touch the Ryoma case.

You doubt it, but I hope this is the case, at least until Gosho Aoyama does a Magic Kaito story where Conan appears: in 2007 he was asked in an interview for Magic Kaito volume 4 if Conan would ever appear in MK and he said that maybe he will in the future. But as of now the animators ran out of DC chapters connected to MK (they missed the timing for adapting Black Star and already adapted Ryoma), so I hope the last 12 episodes will just adapt the missing MK chapters.

Hopefully not, since having Kid's POV of those will remove the mystery of not knwing how he does those tricks until the end, and those cases are not even connected with MK. Plus, they only have 12 episodes left (after they adapt "Star Wars") and many chapters to animate.

Hakuba also had a a minor role in episode 5, Akako's debut, despite the fact that in the manga Akako first appeared 9 chapters before Hakuba did; episode 5 also had a silent cameo of Hakuba's housekeeper.

To be fair to anime producers, Hakuba doesn't appear all that much in the manga. These are his appearences, counting two-parters and three-parters as one story:

*The Great Detective Appears!! (adapted in the first half of episode 4)
*Kaitou Under Scrutiny (adapted in the second half of episode 4)
*Akako's Delivery Service (yet to be animated in this anime)
*Black Star (drawn in the background in one panel when Nakamori talks about the fact that Hakuba is abroad; this scene was removed in episode 6)
*Golden Eye (yet to be animated in this anime; Hakuba has a small role)
*Dark Knight (yet to be animated in this anime)
*Midnight Crow (yet to be animated)

Yeah, maybe due to the fact that they didn't adapt the chapters in the chronological order so my memory is tricky, Hakuba's appearances in the manga was more in-between rather than being pushed back to the later half like in the anime.

Ahh my namesake!

Just watched the first 5 episodes. And I must say it's not very good so far. Maybe it's because I haven't really watched an anime serie in more than 3 years, but I don't like the pacing and the overal design and animation. It look and feels very cheap to me. It definitely doesn't do the manga and the character Kaito any justice..

But still this is Kaito! And I really wanted this anime to be made 10 years ago so I'll give it a couple more episodes.

There is an older Magic Kaito anime in 2012 (12 episodes aired as specials), maybe you will like that more, I personally prefer the older designs and animation.

The new anime sure doesn't have very good animation and the designs irk me as some points (god, them noses ), and the stories are not super interesting but I enjoy the show where it's fun nonetheless. It's about Kaitou Kid after all. I'm pretty sure the target audience are mainly people who know Kaitou Kid from Detective Conan or the manga (if the last episode is any indication, where Conan and co. just show up out of the blue like they have always been there) and the thief is very popular in DC fanbase, so whatever happen there would still be fans watching.

Indeed...

At least now we don't have to wait so long for an episode.

He is a Phantom Thief number 1412 in the police books (looks like they have a real abundance of Phantom Thieves!).
Someone wrote that number in a way that made it look like a word "KID" (you can see it in the OP), that's how he got his nickname.

While 1412 is said to be the secret number given to him by some agency (it could be the FBI, the CIA, the INTERPOL or someone elese), this doesn't mean they every wanted criminal who was given a secret number is a Phantom Thief.

True, and this person is mystery writer Yusaku Kudo, the father of Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa.

Though it should be noticed that the 1412 name is more like a plot device than anything else, as it was used in Kid's first appearance tin Detective Conan to hide Kid's identity to the reader until the big reveal when we see him landing on that roof.

In the following cases, the 1412 name is not mentioned anymore except for two stories: the non-canon movie 3 (which briefly mentions it) and the case in volume 55 when we learn it was Yusaku who gave him that name. In the Magic Kaito manga, we never learn that he is also called 1412, which makes me wonder why the anime was called Magic Kaito 1412. I guess they didn't want to reuse the name Magic Kaito used in the specials.

Lol, this is exactly what I was going to say, minus the last part. I'd already read the manga so I didn't expect that much from this (or at least I didn't expect it to be that much better than the manga). But it WAS much better than the manga for me. (Not that the manga is bad by any means though.)

Wow, this would have probably been my favorite show last season if I had watched it then... *sigh* well at least I'm lucky, lucky, lucky and can now watch this during this season.

I hope this gets popular enough so Gosho can start working on this again in earnest.

Edit:

I'm hoping 1412 becomes relevant in a case that we get to see in the next 12 episodes. (speculation on my part) After all, I'm pretty sure this will be at least covering the Phantom Lady arc...

I guess that this is just a matter of opinion. For me the manga is much better than the anime, and this is especially evident in stories adapted from later chapters, where Gosho's drawing style is at its best (unlike the often weird drawing style of the anime) and where you can see that many script changes made in the anime are questionable.

The Magic Kaito manga is serialized very irregularly.

*Chapters 1-4: published in 1987
*Chapters 5-13: published in 1988
*Chapter 14: published in 1989
*Chapters 15-17: published in 1990
*Chapters 18-19: published in 1993
*Chapter 20: published in 1994
*Chapters 21-22: published in 1995
*Chapters 23-24: published in 1999
*Chapters 25-26: published in 2002
*Chapter 27: published in 2006
*Chapter 28: published in 2007
*Chapters 29-30: published in 2011
*Chapters 31-33: published in 2014

33 chapters for a manga that started in 1987 are very few if you make a comparison with the other two big manga by Gosho Aoyama: Yaiba started in 1988 and ended in 1993 with a total of 255 chapters, while the ongoing Detective Conan started in 1994 and currently has 916 chapters (the last one came out yesterday).

However, Gosho often said he will regularly start publishing Magic Kaito again after the end of Detective Conan; meanwhile, we still get a new story every 3/4 years during pauses of Detective Conan.

The Phantom Lady arc has already been animated in episode 9 plus the first minutes of episode 10. Yes, in case you are wondering, the manga chapters are animated out of order. By the way, the number 1412 was not mentioned at all in the animated Phantom Lady storyline, which makes sense since it wasn't even mentioned in the manga version of the Phantom Lady storyline to begin with.
