Well, i can't say too much for this thing since i haven't watch it yet. But it's good, after all.

Especially the "selamat pagi" part, which is answered by "selamat malam" - but in fact it's still morning

My whole sentiment is that it is random, as in the "trying too hard to be random" variety. So, my feelings about it are mixed.

Loved it so far, not so much for the comedy but because of the completely surrealistic atmosphere.

For those who are hating the first episode for being random, then what's your say on episodic anime, say, Cowboy Bebop?

How dare you compare Cowboy Bebop to Nichijou. It may have been episodic (Though Spike had an overall story that culminated by the very last episode), but each episode actually had a coherent storyline. What does Nichijou have that is anything close to coherent?

I would be fine with this being random if only the jokes were funny but sadly among the many many random jokes they've compiled in ep1 I only found the frisbee one funny the rest pretty much bored me. =/

Being random without any coherency, timing or correct humour is nothing more than discursive sequence of happenings. Only thing that randomness perfectly succeed in achieving was atmosphere, but nothing else was plausible.

Yep, I, for one, would watch this cuz' the atmosphere is so unique and it won me over from the get-go, but the plot is utterly crap, if there's any.

That just means what demographic the magazine is aiming at. It says very little about the content.

Loled when the Yuuko said Selamat pagi.

So surprised they used indonesia/malay greetings. They even added an easter egg in the anime:

The text in the red box is ガムラン (gamuran), which is a japanese language of Gamelan, one of the Indonesian's traditional musical instruments.

Yes, but what does all this mean? I’m not really getting the joke here…

If I am getting the meaning correctly, Good Morning.
Mai's replay was Good Evening. Judging by Yuko's reaction, that was what she was hoping to get.
Mio must know her well enough to ignore some of her stupid comments.
Mai on the other hand, seem to be the quiet troll of the group.

She was trying to be funny with the outlandish greetings : it is Malay, a common street and national language in SEA. Malaysia uses it too as well as Indonesia, though it is not commonly used in Philippines (Tagalog if I am not wrong) and Singapore (erm I am not sure, street language is usually a mixture of English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil, Hokkien, Teochew, Netspeak, Abbreviations...).

Selamat is a goodwill gesture precursing a moment, roughly equivalent to :

Selamat datang = Welcome

Selamat jalan / tinggal (jalan means to move/go somewhere <used on guest>, while tinggal means to stay <used on host>) = Goodbye

Selamat pagi = Good morning

Selamat petang = Good evening (there is no word for afternoon, so petang is generally used to refer to that)

Selamat malam = Good night (malam means night, and so night flea markets are known as Pasar malam)

Selamat Hari Raya = Happy End of Ramadan (technically it is similar in Happy New Year, since Hari Raya in Malaysia and Singapore is the term for Eid in the Mideast)

Not to be confused with bagus (pronounced as bah-goose), which also means good in Malay.

The gamelan is a general term used for malay ensembles, consisting of angklungs (wooden "bells"), kulintangs (Malay xylophones/marimbas), and anything percussion, but eventually it is extended to include strings as well.

In a whole, the whole scene was a short parody of the SEA culture.
