Need Pro Advice on Graphics Card Upgrade

Okay, I see two things:

ATI 1600 Pro
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102665

and my friend's

Nvidia 6800 Ultra which he will sell to me for 100 bucks

I currently own a 9700 pro, which one should I get?

I would really say the Sapphire. Unless your friend's video card is the Geforce 6800 with 512MB. Then it would be a hard decision. Nonetheless, I'd go with the Sapphire.
Even though I've had a bad situation with a Sapphire graphics card and Newegg. Basically, the fan on the graphics card stopped working, which caused the card to fry . Thankfully, Newegg has a system where you can send it back and get another one.

EASILY the 6800U. The 1600 is of a similar speed to what you already have, though with an updated architecture.

Yeah, but I don't like the fact that it's a used card :S

There are plenty of things that can be reused on a computer.
Used Harddrives and powersupplies I generally dont recommend them.
Harddrive Mechanical, powersupplies seem to last 3 years of use for me (24,7).

I stray... Video Cards are definitely reusable.
Hell the only thing that survived from my POS computer from ages past was my RAM and my video card. Rest were showing their age or flatout not working.

Before you buy it make sure he cleans it though.

Well, I have a x1600 pro in my computer. What I can say is this... in terms of encoding you get better performance but in video you're getting about the same power as a 9800pro, which is not terribly significant a gain. It is a very economical update though.

I'd say 6800 if you're not going to do encoding/decoding of H.264 much.

Anyways, yeah, I'm getting the 6800 ultra then. I can't wait, 1 more week.
As for my old 1gig rig cruz, I am currently using it as a slave computer to do things like post on AS forums :P I didn't throw it out.

I'd say 6800U even if you're doing encoding, because CoreAVC renders hardware decoding essentially useless, and ALL consumer or even "prosumer" hardware encode offloading is TERRIBLE quality compared to software codecs. I wouldn't touch avivo with a 10 foot pole, and I don't even hate ATI per say (though I don't think they're in a good position currently, I have owned multiple Radeon cards in the past and may again in the future)
