Honestly I feel like this series is wasted potential. The setting is so interesting yet I felt like the scenes were not properly planned out. What's up with Johnny's I wasn't aware that's what NEETs are nick-named in Japan. I felt like a lot of scenes were worthless in the first anime that doesn't contribute to the development of the characters or the plot, nor does it help create comedy. If only they took out those scenes and replaced them with things that actually make sense or give the series enough time to include the events of the movie.

I didn't really understand why Akira brain-washed himself again. It didn't seem right, nor did it contribute to the plot, it just felt like I had to waste time to see these two characters meet again. Yet the mysterious of Akira is already gone since we know the guy, didn't help at all. I didn't understand why he was in New York either, I know his last command was to become "king", which he did figuratively. But why is he in New York? Why did this command LEAD him to New York? Is there really a reason he should be in New York? Does it actually contribute to the plot or anything? Why couldn't he just end up some place in Japan? Did we really have to go through all that for him just to go back to Japan again?

I mentally crossed referenced the whole 'Why NY' point with movie 2 when you asked and you're more or less right because the second movie ends in japan. The only random ass link with NY is to do with Akira's past but even that's resolved when they return back to Japan, so yeah... maybe just a change of scene? The english voices were amusing

Saki is also a very worthless character. She has like, absolutely no point in the entire series. She's like a romantic interest that really isn't, she doesn't develop anything between Akira. At the end of the series she some what does when he grabs her hand again, oh wow, then he brainwashes himself again. What the hell is her point!? Is she here so that the audience an relate to her because she's like an average jane? I'm not relating to her at all. It would be another thing if she was a NEET(like a freaking hardcore one), and was truly influenced by Akira.

I doubt you'll change your opinion with the next 90 mins that you see in movie 2, I guess her part just gives it some kinda semi 'love' story to a tale that doesn't really need it, but it'd appease some fans who're into it? *shrugs* You're not the only one who finds her presence or role pretty pointless, but there's nothing for me to explain, per se, except see how you feel when the series is done.

Can someone explain these points for me?

I just finished watching the first movie and wow... I'm completely lost. It's been some time since I've watched the TV series, but I really have no idea what is going on anymore. I had no idea what the characters were up to or why stuff was happening, and I have no idea where the story is going. Was anyone able to make something out of this movie?

I'm sure some are, there's already a super speed release with subs that are so-so, or you can wait for others to finish, as it's a movie (3 eps worth) it takes a lot of work and time, so wait until early April.

And besides, there's a quick summary of the series in the movie OP, so that should kinda jog your memory.
That or wait for a better sub to come out, maybe things will make more sense on a second viewing.

Yes, there are groups subbing ^^ I just finished watching the version from DB-gg which I find really well done so I have no complaints there.

About the movie itself... here's my opinion:

I finished watching the series only in January =) and I have to say that as a series, it started going downhill for me near the end (like a lot of people), but I still had a lot of hope that the movies would make up for it. I can't say that I'm disappointed with how the first movie turned out.... but it wasn't what I was expecting. I would probably rate it as average. It did a good job answering questions like the gap between the end of the anime and beginning of the movie... and it also set up the characters well for the final movie. But that's it o_O

I didn't really feel anything else besides a good build up and perhaps some character development. I was looking forward to see Takizawa again... he's a great main male lead and I was hoping to see a different side to him? Considering how he doesn't know Saki at all... but it seems like he kinda just jumped in accepting everything she told him and I didn't like that -___-' So for the remainder of the movie, although it's to build up "romance" between the two or them or whatever relationship, I didn't really feel it and it's a shame because I was such a HUGE fan of them in the series T_T sigh*

As for everything else... the plot is still a huge question mark for me. I forgot basically who everyone was (and their No.) so I had to look that up... but it seems to me that there's still a lot of questions and I'm not sure if I should bring it up in case they're NOT going to be answered and I'll just feel incomplete when the 2nd movie comes o_O Oh wells... hoping that at least 2nd movie will be better than the first =)

I'm not sure rewatching the first series would help me figuring out what's happening now. Watching this movie kinda felt like watching the fifth season of Lost. I had a pretty good grasp on the situation up until the fourth season, then I started the fifth and I was like "WTF is going on".

Ok, after reading the movie summaries on the net, I have this to say

What a bunch of croc! No story that includes amnesia from episode 1 should ever be expected to go on reasonably. And a story that uses memory losses a dozen times is a failure in terms of a satisfying resolution to the problems and the conflicts in the plot. WTH, just forget everything that happened??? It was lame here as it was on Elfen Lied, Code Geass, Casshern Sins and the like. If I ever make my own works, amnesia will be a forbidden trope, as well as time travel and magical resurrections.

I am very disappointed from this title. I loved it up until the first half of the series but then it became a mess of random, irrational actions. I still give it an overall of 7 for the great animation and the likable characters. But man, it could have been so much more.

No I haven't and after reading the summaries I now don't plan to.
I got some negative reps for doing the same over at the Avatar film. So after 6 months I watched the damn thing and it was as bad as they said it would be. There is nothing I would see differently by watching them.
So please don't mind my bias as I said amnesia is a terrible plot element that I dislike just by reading about it. I wouldn't like them even if I did watch them.
I mean, come on, amnesia? It didn't even make sense. And was used as panacea. That is a triple blunder.

Have you considered that had you not read the summaries on the Avatar beforehand, that might have affected your enjoyment of the film?

It would be more unexpected but I don't know if that would make it more enjoyable. They could have just made it more hateful for all I know.
But even without the summaries, the amnesia routine present since ep.1 was enough of a damage to begin with. The later half made it even worse. And the movies I "hear" did little to explain or wrap everything in a logical or clear way. That's three strikes.

...Great fluent animation though. And loved the Oasis song.

What kind of excuse is that? If anything it just makes people comfortable in their own ignorance. I was told that Twilight books and movies are terrible but it is when I managed to read a few chapters and saw some minutes of the movie that I have decided that it is not my thing. Not because the reviews have done it for me, but because I have read enough books and seen enough movies to see the jarring flaws of Twilight.

Reviews should never do the work for you.

As for discussions, people need to share their experience while some others need to be sure that their expectations may be met.

Well people write reviews to share their opinions... not to brainwash everyone into taking their view on how good/bad something was o_O

I still think you should watch the films (probably when the second one comes out?) since you've already seen the series. It'll give you a better sense of closure and yes... you might agree with the summaries/reviews that you've read but at least you have your own basis of where those opinions come from =)
