To everyone who kindly corrected me about the letter - yeah, my bad, I forgot that they mentioned it in the previous ep. In my mind that letter box scene is linked to a flashback about little Kaoru furiously writing letters to his friends, and checking the letter box only to find that he haven't received any replies.

I'm pretty sure this is what the director wanted, otherwise they would've taken another approach... but as I said, I think he's spot on with this character. Yes, he's very different and jarring, but that's how Seiji is supposed to be. He's just that different.

Also take into account the music he "represents": the scene with Olympus playing pretty much summed up what rock and roll was back then (in Japan, anyway), with all the cheesiness and mannerisms and so on. And if you look at the typical mannerisms of Japanese idols... yeah, Seiji has all that down pat. And as Guardian Enzo said, that's how rock and roll seemed like to everyone who wasn't into it. I mean, look at the other characters' reactions. Sen and Kaoru initially think he's a freak, Yamaoka is pretty creeped out by him, too, and though it was cut from the anime, after the electricity goes out he tries to dance to keep the audience's attention, at which point the third year guys say "Get off from there! A man shouldn't be shaking his ass like that, it's disgusting."

Yeah, it sounds like him - I was just wondering, since they used a voice double for Suwabe to sing... but then, this song was in Japanese so I guess Okamoto could sing it with no problem. Btw, if anyone wants to listen to the original, it's here. (Too bad we had to cut away from the performance when Kaoru went out, I would've loved to see Maruo rocking like a boss.)

As for Hosoya Yoshimasa, i first noticed him in No.6 - he was perfect for the role, sure, but what really caught my attention was that really... pretty timbre that his voice has. It's just pretty. I could listen to him reading the Yellow Pages for hours. Back then I predicted lots of angsty pretty boy roles in his future (dunno if he had any, for all I know he already has a number of BL CDs uner his belt), so I was really surprised when I learned that he would be voicing such a character.

Suwabe Junichi, I first heard him in the X anime (that I hated, urgh) as Fuuma, along with Suzumura Kenichi as Kamui. Both have come so far... And "feminine sultriness" is a pretty good description of what Endou Aya does with her voice here, and it's definitely a great choice for Yurika.

I actually liked Seiji. His "campiness" was amusing and I admired his ambitions (even if he was a little bit of a dick back at that beach).

It was exactly what you said kirarakim
She felt badly for giving in even for just a moment to the guy she knows is crushing on her hard

Sen begins to pick up on Yurika's feelings for Jun on their little outing
And fully realizes at the shop when he sees her with the record but the poor guy went and gave that push

For me Seiji have a two personality, but after he's seen the performances and said "cool", hoping Seiji turn like jazz also
I understand why sen punched Jun, sen already know yurika love jun I think

I loved this episode; great week for noitamina!

I thought Sen had figured out from his "date" with Yurika that she was into Jun. So I was surprised when he tried to kiss her in the basement. He's also carrying the Chet Baker record with the song Jun sang at the gig. So you'd think Sen would realize that Yurika isn't likely to respond well to a romantic advance. That opinion is reinforced by seeing the look of fear on Yurika's face as they enter the basement. What happens next seems like it was written in an anthropology textbook.

Sen aggressively encircles Yurika in a territorial way. It's as though he's staking his "claim" on Yurika and trying to bully her into choosing him over Jun. Sen even appears to have succeeded in this strategem during the remarkably animated kissing sequence. Yurika is on the verge of reciprocating before Jun crashes the party. The look of horror in Yurika's eyes tells you everything you need to know about how her beautiful romantic fantasy starring Junichi has been torn to shreds. I thought she might throw up as she leaves the store. I don't think she blames anyone but herself for what transpired with Jun either.

I agree with Kaoru Chujo that we're supposed to think Yurika lost her virginity to Jun. She tells Kaoru that she "betrayed [Sentarou] in the worst way." Jun seems a rather promiscuous fellow and likely not above seducing a headstrong high-school girl. At this point the lack of much back story about the girls leaves me speculating. Yurika is an artist and from her portrait of Sentarou probably thinks of herself as avant-garde. It's not hard to see her imagining a beautiful artistic romance with a jazz musician. She might be chomping at the bit to spread her wings and leave her parents behind, too. We'll never know, of course.

I can see where you are going with this. However, my interpretation of the scene was different. Yurika did mention that part of her guilt is that she had a slight moment of giving in to her loneliness. She felt bad for two reasons.

1) She was about to kiss another man (Sen) in front of the man she truly wants (Jun).
2) She was leading Sen on and using him to fill in her loneliness when she truly did not love him.

It became very obvious to Sen after that point that Yurika only has eyese for Jun. However, the whole situation is quite a mess right now.

Am I the only one who thought Sentarou was a real jerk, not only for cornering Yurika in such a brutish manner, but also for punching Junichi?

I agree with this assessment which makes Yurika a jerk as well. At least she did show some remorse for her actions, unlike Sentarou, who only feels sorry for himself.

On another note, Ritsuko was super cute this episode, as usual. I just hope she doesn't end up with Sentarou, she's way too good for him, in my opinion.

I'm on a bit of a Noitamina Radio binge, and noticed that Suwabe Junichi was a guest a while ago. So if anyone's interested, hop over here look for the 59th part, where Suwabe talks about Junichi and Sakamichi no Apollon and probably lots of other stuff. (Haven't listened to it yet.)

Aaawww, turns out he thought he would sing "But Not For Me" and practiced for days, and in the end they just told him "nah, it's OK, you won't sing" XD;;

(Also, Kimura Ryouhei (aka Kaoru) is the latest, 62th guest.)

He wanted to sing! We could have heard him sing! And they decided no!?
That's so sad
Did they even test him out or was the decision made earlier for someone else?

Though I've never heard him sing in English before -- are there any such songs

Apparently, he read the manga and knew Jun would sing, and during recording the sound director told him that he may have to sing the song. So he started practicing and learning the lyrics and stuff, and then after some days they told him that he wouldn't sing. He says he was half relieved and half disappointed.

Yep. He's... well, average? ^^;; He has a pretty strong accent, and I guess this is why he didn't get to sing as Jun. I suppose with enough practice he could've done it in a way that it wouldn't have been distracting, but it was faster and easier to just use the guitarist guy (forgot his name) whose voice is similar to Suwabe's, and speaks better English. (Rikko, of course, gets to sing "My Favorite Things" accent and all, because unlike Junichi she's not supposed to be all cool and pro-like.) These songs are sung by Suwabe Junich and have some English segments.

(damn, I should really watch Uta no Prince-sama for some ear candy, but I can't disassociate the red & blue pair from Sanada Yukimura and Date Masamune from Sengoku Basara... ^^;;; )

That's also how I interpreted the "betrayal" thing.

I don't think he meant anything rapey, but I can see why one would think otherwise.

I don't know about "jerk", but he certainly lost control there. Frustration, humiliation, disappointment (not just at what happened with Yurika, but at seeing his hero in such a state), confusion... and it translated into violence.

I didn't mean that, either. I just meant the typical macho attitude of "I'm gonna force you to kiss me whether you want to or not." I detest men forcing themselves on women, whether the women reciprocate (willingly or otherwise) or not. For this, in my book, Sentarou is a Class A Jerk. Not having much experience with the romantic side of women is no excuse for that behaviour.

Sentarou is like two sides of a single coin. One side is golden and shiny, like how he treats his family, as well as how he values the few friends that he does have. The other side of the coin is more like base metal, crude and worthless. Although, originally, his fighting with other kids was a self-protection reaction, now he actually relishes getting into fights and enjoys beating the pulp out of his opponents. Certainly not the attitude of a Christian who is supposed to love his fellow man. (Just for the record, I am not a Christian, but I have been led to believe that this is one of the fundamental beliefs of Christianity. Please correct me if I am wrong.)

Lately, we have been seeing more and more of that golden side of Sentarou, but, unfortunately, in this incident, the coin flipped, and we were seeing the very basest side of Sentarou, not only in the brutish manner he cornered Yurika, but also lashing out at one of the very few friends that he has ever had. Not a good thing to do.

"Go ahead guys."

"But...!"

"Don't worry." *Takes off glasses* "I got this."

Kamina and Hosaka can now add Kaoru to their ranks. Seriously, if he really took off his glasses before sitting down to the piano, all the girls would've die and go to Heaven. I nearly did, and I'm not a girl.

Another action-packed episode (why does every episode feel like the final episode?). The romance is in a five way Mexican standoff. Perhaps Sentaro and Kaoru becoming idols in school will provide a catalyst. Kaoru in particularly seems to be entering that lucky period in life when girls notice him.

When Yurika was confessing her troubles to Kaoru outside the auditorium, I thought they were going to make a connection too, thus tangling the web further (and making things even more interesting).

Awesome episode.

Despite my love for Sen I half agree with you, in that I thought he came on too strong to Yurika. On the other hand I felt that Jun behaved like a complete dick with his "carry on, don't mind me" and "your woman dropped her record" remarks. Now, I'm guessing he's hurting and bitter but I can perfectly well understand Sen being angry. The whole Jun, Sen, Yurika triangle is a mess and I don't feel like apportioning blame for the current state of things. We don't currently know enough. I am inclined to wonder if Yurika may be more naive and less calculating than some believe.

Some points:
-Sen idolizes Jun
-he is not that stupid either, and can put two and two together
-Jun was kind of an ass, no, scratch that, he was a total ass
-and hurt Yurika
-never mind Sen

So yeah. I think it's pretty easy to see why Sen blew up at him. He's not some sort of an unpredictable, violent beast (the only reason he ever started fighting was people picking fights with him), he just got very angry at Jun. Not saying that it was right to hit him, but well... *shrug*

I kept grinning like an idiot through out the jazz session. And when Karou started playing that tune Sen likes so much (I forgot the title), I squealed.

Nice reconcilation!

That was, arguably, one of the most moving animated performances I have ever seen.

Someone please throw more money at Watanabe and make him direct more shows.

Throw some money at the BDs and show him - and the industry - that there's a market for shows like this. I don't expect much in terms of sales, but every little bit helps.

I want to highlight the really neat animation in the cuts where the students where telling each other about the concert. They were animated by BahiJD, a foreign animator that started on gifs and found a place as key animator for this show.

Sometimes I think people don't give animation the recognition that it deserves in an audiovisual medium such as anime, thus I wrote this.
