(L) Fractale (TV)

The heartbreaking thing for me is when Phryne says Nessa is her "when she was still beautiful". Well, she is still beautiful, dammit - and at least Clain knows it. The real tragedy is that this beautiful child has been made to loathe herself by the creeping evil of the adults around her. That's the tipping point for me - as bad as Lost Millennium is, they're not as vile as these screwed-up temple pigs. As Clain says, they're murderers - but the only "real" friends he's had. Though my sense is that there are no good adults here - just degrees of moral culpability. Even within L.M., while there's certainly a difference between Sunda's group and Alabaster it's clear no one's hands are clean.

It should be pointed out that Clain, though he did take up a weapon to rescue Phryne, did not stoop to Sunda's level - he never fired at a person. Would he, if it came down to that being the only way to save the girls he loves? We may never find out. Things look pretty grim - Nessa is fading along with Fractale, Onee-san is starting the reboot, and Daddy is doing disgusting things to poor Phryne. I don't see all three kids making it out alive, and I see death flags for Sunda too. I fully expect the series to end with Fractale destroyed and the dead-eyed citizens starting over, but I find myself caring less about that than about the three heroes.

For all the criticism this show has taken, all the big ideas wrapped up inside it are starting to pay off and the level on investment in the three main characters has risen dramatically. It's not dramatically perfect but it really is a series that's about real issues, portrayed intelligently, with what looks in the end to have been a well-structured and intricate plot. I wish there were more shows that had some of those qualities.

I agree - he's actually one of the bigger talents in the field as far as I'm concerned. If he knew when to keep his mouth shut he'd be much less maligned in the fan community.

One of the things I like about Yamakan is that he doesn't play it safe - he's not afraid to try risky things, even if they sometimes don't work. Risk-taking is something to be admired in any artistic endeavor, anime certainly included.

Considering how the show isn't exactly the definition of success, one has to wonder if Yamakan will go ahead with his "threat". Considering what he's managed to do with this series, that would be a big shame if he did.

I don't think she's not a virgin as I think her virginity is very vital in Fractale (that creepy test of her "father" reminds me of the Vampire Bund).

But she is abused, it is very apparent in her reactions.

I don't know. Phryne's father, bad as he is, is just one man. Incestuous rapists are, alas, everywhere, and I don't know that I'd want to judge the whole institution because of one member. I'm more disturbed by the casual disregard for the lives of the Phynes - that's something you can say the Temple as a whole is responsible for. I can't exactly approve of the way they've painted themselves - and most of humanity with them - into a corner, by relying so much on something as fragile as Fractale, either.

And is LM really better? They're the ones who never considered peaceful coexistence, even though it seems space isn't an object and they were at least tolerated by the Temple. They're the ones who slaughtered priests and helpless civilians, and for what? Because they couldn't stand the idea other people found a happiness that was different from theirs? And once they destroy the system - how much of the world population's going to die? 90%? 99%? Do they care?

It maybe a sexual abuse but not an intercourse (that will explain ep 9 'test')

and I also agree that there will be a lot of death flags.....

I really hope for a good ending but that is maybe impossible

That's all about how "virginity" is defined. If it's vaginal penetration, she can still have been raped and still be a virgin. "Defiled" implies that excrement happened.

Understandable why this is sucking in the ratings. (no pun intended) Subject matter not conducive to sales. He should have done a comedy instead.

Who knows...maybe we will get a happy(ish) ending! Nessa becomes real somehow. Phyrne sees the power of friendship around her. Arch priestess sees how wrong the system is. Creeper dad takes a plunge off temple. LM goes and has a big party. The normal fractale people get taught by LM to live w/o the system and everyone is happy (minus a few dead temple people and some that can't adapt)!

Ya....only a few death flags and maybe some slight mental barriers stand in the way....

It's kind of odd, but when I was watching Clain run around the Fractale temple while Phryne was trying to debate with the high priestess, I was imaging a certain Gallifreyan holding that same kind of conversation.

Although, he'd probably whip out the sonic screwdriver and find a way to bring the whole thing down... but that would be a very different kind of story!

So what's the over/under that none of them survive this? My bet is that Clain makes it, Phyrne and Nessa merge/sacrifice themselves. I hope Sunda lives, but he's in some pretty shady company with Dias right now...

And yeah, I really wish it didn't go the creepy route with "father", but whatever.
