Dark Magical Girl anime?

Can anyone recommend me any anime that does a very similar thing to what Madoka does?

Does it have to be a Magical girl show? I ask because the closest thing I've seen to Madoka Magica is probably Made in Abyss which is a fantasy adventure.

If not then I'd recommend Magical Girl Site, though it's a lot more crude in its "darkness".

There's also Magical Girl Rasing Project, though the anime takes a more battle royal styled story, with things only switching up further in the light novel.

Aside from those two, I recommend Daybreak Illusion and Yuuki Yuuna Is A Hero as well. Magical Girl Special Ops Asuka will come out this winter but it is the type of series you're looking for.

In the beautifully-illustrated Mahou Shoujotai Arusu (aka "Tweeny Witches") young Arusu ("Alice") falls off a building into a magical world. While she wants everyone to use magic to make people happy, Arusu quickly learns there are others who would wield magic for darker purposes.

It doesn't really work that way, since Madoka is a deconstruction and without that, there will always seem to be something missing.

Here are some other genre deconstruction anime:

Mai-HiME (Mahou Shoujo)
Shin Seiki Evangelion (Mecha/Super Robot)
Hai to Gensou no Grimgar (Isekai, modern)
Ima, Soko ni Iru Boku (Isekai, classic)
School Days (Harem)
Narutaru (Pet Monster, think Pokemon, Digimon,..)
Bokurano (Mecha)
Mahou Shoujo Tokushusen Asuka (Mahou Shoujo)
Toradora (Harem)
The World God Only Knows (VN adaptation)

Mai HiME - Madoka, was based on it.

Then there is alternative universe that is more similar to magical girl - Mai Otome
