^This certainly gives me a little more hope. The Titanic conversion as quite masterful (yes, I saw ti in 3d in the theatres), and if Del Toro is going to use a similar method then at least most of the glitches seen in regular conversions will be removed. I'm still upset by this change, but since Del Toro is on board, I can live with it more easily.

For a super-massive mecha, that sure looks cool. I was kinda expecting a Tetsujin-like robot. That design makes me super-excited!!!

Cool

Now, now.

We both said a lot of things that you're going to regret.

I´m sure we can put our differences behind us.

For science.

You monster.

Del Toro Discusses the Origins of the “Jaeger” from Pacific Rim
November 26, 2012 · by Kaiju · in News

Fan friendly director Guillermo del Toro gives a brief explanation of the origins of the Jaeger on his official website. There, he says that real life technologies were the basis for some aspects of the design of the giant robots featured in the movie:

“The Jaegers were based on existing Robotic / DARPA Jet-fighter neural links. The very first engines used to create the “muscle strands” on the Jaeger limbs were Husqvarna engines and the first assembly line was an amalgam between Germany and US. Those were the MARK I“, del Toro writes.

DARPA does have an active Neural-Interface project and a summary of which can be found on their site. Also, it’s interesting how “muscle strands” will be used in the movie which, off-the-bat, reminds me of Evangelion Units’ biomechanical innards. However, the director expands on the engine idea by saying:

“Muscle Strand” was a new base nomenclature for the horse power assigned to each Jaeger’s limb but it is not an actual muscle fiber-based system.

Still not crazy on how the Jaegers are piloted, but god damn do they look glorious. Those are some sick mecha designs. Love em.
