Google says multiple services blocked in China

Quote:
Reuters) - Google Inc said several of its online services have been blocked in China.

Traffic to Google's services in China dropped sharply beginning Friday evening there, according to an online "Transparency Report" website operated by Google, which provides updates about access to its services in different parts of the world.

Among the sites affected were Google's search engine and its Gmail web email product.

What Zakoo, Rahan, and Don- wrote... more specifically last year:

45% aid to PIIGS (until '90s), East Germany (until '00s), and for the past decade Eastern Europe.
31% the controversial agricultural programs, that despite being unanimously hated, without it almost no small/mid-range farm will survive in west and north Europe (in the south they are already destroyed by it).
11% environmental policies
6% foreign aid (mainly bribing former english, french, and dutch colonies' politicians)
6% The Bureaucracy of Brussels
1% funding social care, equality in employment, and modernization of buisness and governance programs

ECB and rescue packages are mainly self-funded, since they bring back more money than they give (that is subject to change). But since they were based on former public banks, one can also claim that they originated from tax-payers, but that's a very complicated issue

A more interesting statistic is the allocation of their GDP to the EU budget (2009):

-0.53% Denmark
-0.41% Italy
-0.37% Germany
-0.36% Finland
-0.34% France
-0.26% Netherlands
-0.24% UK
-0.18% Austria
-0.18% Cyprus
-0.13% Sweden
-0.19% Ireland

In other words for each 100 euros or pounds a German or British tax-payer makes, his states sends 37 or 24 cents or pennies back to the union... to keep things into perspective

IMHO, 1 trillion is way too few money, and there is a lot of waste because most conservative governments obstruct unification and modernization.

Plus some countries are just pissed France and Spain are the biggest beneficiary of one of biggest european subsidy. (I am looking at you UK) but it is because it's the biggest agricultural power and the subsidies are proportionate to the production level.

Western countries tolerate the fact overall money redistribution favor the East, but don't like it when it clearly favors a western power (unless they are that power, of course). That said, without the PAC, most of the small farmers would disappear and the EU would probably prevent France to subside them because it would be unfair to the farmers of other countries.
I'm not convinced that most of Europe's agricultural production is so dependent on the CAP. While there are the smaller "traditional" farmers to consider, I don't see why the rest of us should subsidise their inefficient farming that can't stand without a subsidy. If they want to live the traditional lifestyle, let them have the poverty that traditionally goes with it, you can't have your cake and eat it(19th century farmers couldn't afford televisions and computers, why should we be surprised that 21st century farmers can using 19th century methods? If they want 21st century goods, they should farm in a 21st century way...).

Anyway, most of the CAP doesn't go to small farmers (it's paid by the acre) but to large ones, who don't really need the help.

The CAP also inordinately harms less developed nations, as they can't compete against the flood of cheap subsidized produce that comes out of the EU.

And is it fair that I have to pay French, Polish or, yes, Irish Farmers for them to produce goods that I may never want?

So my argument regarding the CAP, is that if a European farmer can't survive without the CAP, maybe they should get out of farming. Or modernize.

But as I said earlier, the most egregious problems with the CAP are already being dealt with, thankfully. I still disagree with carte blanche agricultural subsidies. The only measure I think the EU should take is to buy up food at market prices to stabilize the food supply in case of drought.

We've seen wars over farmland and waterways, but yes, such incidents can happen again.

There is a huge online one day sale (Nov. 11) going on in China starting from midnight. Within 3 hours the transaction amount exceeds 3 billion yuan (half of a billion USD).

Hu opens Chinese congress with call to fight corruption

Quote:
BEIJING — China’s ruling Communist Party opened a quinquennial conclave Thursday with a stark warning from its outgoing leader, President Hu Jintao, that the 91-year-old party could collapse if it fails to rein in rampant corruption that has produced myriad scandals in recent months and caused widespread public disaffection.

Hu, who will relinquish his title of party secretary general next week at the end of this 18th Party Congress, appeared to dash earlier hopes that this meeting would make a nod to real political reform and jettison seemingly outdated references to China’s first Communist leader, Mao Zedong. Instead, Hu spoke of the need to improve only “intra-party democracy” and “socialist democracy,” and he extolled the virtues of “Mao Zedong Thought.”

Most Asian countries are doing just fine with one party systems, and its not like the multi party systems of the west operate differently than the factions within those large parties as the chinese communists or the japanese liberals.

http://www.lapresse.ca/actualites/qu...le-loi-101.php (article in French)

Looks like that big fat walrus, Pauline Marois, will try again implementing a new bill to enforce French in Quebec... which is more an initiative smeared with bigotry because they can't stand English words in various businesses. That's the job of the people to preserve languages and culture, not legislation.

To hell with Parti Québécois!!! And I am one who grew up with French education BTW.

And so do I.
The ''loi 101'' was intended to be temporary, to help at putting french at his real place (back them it was really needed), like a crutch helping to it stand up. But the PQ see it like the graal .

Two things to keep in mind; Pauline Marois can barely speak in english ( and barely might be too generous) and the PQ pretty much given up the possibility to get the anglophone vote for both election and a potential referendum.

As for Petraeus, well, the news about him booted off from the CIA would make a big splash in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Deadly blast devastates Indianapolis neighborhood
Quote:
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Splintered beams and boards on a piece of charred earth were all that remained Sunday where at least two Indianapolis homes were leveled in a blast that killed two people and rendered homes for blocks uninhabitable.
A sudden massive explosion late at night in what appeared to be a typical subdivision.

Whoa, look at the scattered rubble on this one. The house (or houses) were totally shattered. It was mentioned in the article that a bomb or meth lab explosion was ruled out, according to a local representative. If that's really the case, I wonder what could have caused such a violent blast.

It's either a gas explosion or a guy who wanted to go out with a bang, literally. Gas company claims there was no leak. The investigators at the scene holding themselves from declaring the two deceased as "victim" as of yet. That said, it probably is a gas explosion. Indiana is notorious for having series of devastating gas explosion over the years. I believe just last month there was an explosion in Indiana in another house. Luckily that house was vacant.

Looks like a compression blast from the picture, which means it's not meth, and extremely unlikely to be gas - you'd need a lot of gas, which also happens to be pressurized somehow for this to happen. Not impossible, but not very likely.

You're looking at some serious tonnage of explosives here, old TNT or solidox comes to mind first, eitherway, whatever it was, they had enough of it to give a 500 pounder a run for its money.
