True, the old episodes at least had plot and jokes that had something to do with the plot. Now the jokes are way too random and it is not funny anymore. I tried to watch one of the new episodes, about 8 minutes in I was bored as hell and none of jokes made me even smile. The biggest example of the stupidity is the chicken fight, bit amusing first time, maybe the second time it was bit amusing, by the third time I was thinking "WTF is this shit?".

The transition from the beginning, to now, is way too off.
One day, Meg went from being an invisible girl to the family's verbal punching bag. And on another day (I think it happened the ep after Stewie "killed Lois"), Stewie went from Evil, to gay. And another thing to it's downfall, too many similar shows nowadays. American Dad, and The Cleveland show. I saw the opening of the Cleveland show and was like "What is this? I don't even". Then i was like "OH SHI-! I ACCIDENTALLY THE CHANNEL!" 4chan jokes aside, Family guy has become terrible nowadays. I mean, occasionally it is funny to see Meg to get discriminated against. But there are too many problems with the show nowadays. Par example, the repetitive Koolaid-man. Or, the chicken + Peter fight. Or the cut-away-from-the-main-show-to-make-a-pop-culture-joke. |

The worst of the worst is that awful Conway Twitty joke, though. They took up around 3 minutes of a whole episode with that, and it's not and never has been even remotely funny.

^Long jokes (and other filler material) are always used when the episode needs to be padded out to fit the 21 minute quota. Many comedy shows do this (ex: Simpsons does this by having longer intros (they will use shorter intros if the episode is too long)), but the Conway Twitty joke abused this to the max.
That being said, as a partial defense of Family Guy, as Kyle from South Park has said, sometimes you just don't feel in the mood for "smart" or subtle humour. Sometimes all you want is a gag and a prat fall. For those times, Family Guy exists, and it is the best of that type of pointless humour. |

No offense to Family Guy, but if I want a gag and a prat fall, I'll stick in a Chevy Chase movie.

lol oh man XD reading this topic was funny, when did Family Guy even really have a plot? I mean, yea, it has sitcom storylines, like "Meg gets a job" and shit, but that's all still there.
if you want heavy plot, don't watch comedy cartoons like family guy.

Anyway, I used to love Family Guy even before it went "mainstream" (whenever that was) but now I hate it because it feels like they don't want to try writing their own jokes anymore and start telling injokes. This is why I think (classic) Simpsons is better, because they can make a pop culture reference and if you don't get it, the writers will find a way to still make you laugh with it. At least South Park, The Simpsons, Futurama, and the handful of others that have been mentioned here go so far as to have a plot. The jokes are directly related to the story the episode is trying to tell.
Family Guy's comedy model seems to be "Spin the two wheels!" *Insert random anecdotal moment* + *insert pop culture reference* = funny? I think not...

I usually prefer American Dad to Family Guy but now with Dubya gone most of the fun is gone .
But last week's American Dad was so funny . This is joke which most anime fans will understand and appreciate . Spoiler for Last week's American.Dad episode:

ok yes i can agree that Family Guy is a little dry, but it's not as though every episode is pure stupid randomness. nearly every episode has some plot. wether it be peter getting a promotion, brian and stewie going on a retarded adventure, peter becoming jewish, etc. then it has random things thrown in like dumb jokes, Quagmire descovering internet porn, peter's "this reminds me of the time when..." moments.
I'm just sayin your givin family guy to little credit.

I occasionally like the parodies of musicals.... and I did find the "Stewie and the multiverse" very amusing in a Twilight Zone sensibility. But no.... if I manage to watch more than 5 minutes - it rarely causes even a smirk.

Family Guy stopped being funny when Stewie and Brian were turned from a hilarious pair of megalomaniac baby and straight dog into mouthpieces for MacFarlane's soapbox-of-the-day (the moment when Brian jumped the shark has been meticulously recorded on TvTropes, of course). And while the universe hates Meg for absolutely no fucking reason whatsoever (she's actually rather popular with the fanbase, or what's left of it), the retarded asshat Peter gets away with everything. They fill the remaining twenty minutes each episode with shallow Meet the Spartans-style popular culture namedrops, juvenile humor, and drawn-out extended jokes.
People get sick of that after a while. /2 denarii |

^But you see, even at a primal, instinctive level, there's something really offensive about the way the show let asshats like Peter get away with every shitty little thing. You don't even really think about it, you just feel it and then it's not so fine anymore.
I guess I just prefer my mindless entertainment big-eyed, fluffy, and a with nice sprinkle of sugar and spice...? |
