Actually I think a remake that closely followed the story of the manga (and it'd have to be two or three movies to do that justice, I reckon) could be pretty awesome.
If you've not read the manga, you're missing a treat. The story has just so much more going for it. |

That being said there are a few good things in the manga that are missing in the anime but not as many to justify 7 books in my opinion. And even if you made a whole new movie to include that stuff, it wouldn't be nearly as good as the first one. So in the end I don't really think a sequel or a remake would be a good idea, especially if done by Anno.

^ You have to see it. We rarely get a perfect blend of gentle-yet-badass princess in our fantasy stories (many times, they use those two elements to put some contrast to the character like Fiona in Shrek movies), but Nausicaa deliver it in spades.
