Crying Freeman by Dark Horse

Just wondering if anyone has picked up vol.1 from DH. I picked up last night and am just happy to read it right-to-left like it should be without the pages being unflipped as well.

Comparing it to VIZ release from way back when I noticed a few changes. The DH version seem to be darker where as in the same spot on the VIZ version there wasn't that darkness to it. On some sex scenes, susch as the tatto artist being raped by those two guys from Camora. In the VIZ release they show the penetration but in the DH release it is mosaiced like in Japanse porn. Also vol.1 from the VIZ release is longer in story compared to the DH one.

Size wise the VIZ relase was big but the DH release is just F A T. Serioulsy you all should check it out when you can.

Anyways, thoughts? Complaints? Praise? what did you all think of this compared to the old release or just in general?

In other words the DH version is censored while the Viz version was not? That's unusual, it's usually the other way round. I enjoyed what I read of CF from Viz, but not enough to shell out cash for the DH version. If I ever come across it somehow I'll be sure to give it a shot.

Since I know these (and every other board) are just BURSTING with Crying Freeman excitement I brought up the mosaic issue at the Dark Horse boards and this is what Samantha Robinson Dark Horse Editorial Assistant posted

We have not imposed any kind of censorship of our own upon Crying Freeman. The 'blur' effects to which you are referring actually appear in the most recent Japanese edition of the book put out by Mr. Koike's own company; what we have done is produce a faithful reproduction -- at Mr. Koike's behest -- of this most recent edition. The reason for the disparity between our edition and that published by Viz many years ago has to do not with our preferences as companies, but rather with changes in the Japanese social and political climate. Censorship laws in Japan have changed considerably over the years, with certain periods being far more conservative than others. Different editions of a single book can often reflect these changes; this is the case with Crying Freeman, which used to be published by Shogakukan, but has since been returned to Mr. Koike's own company, Koike Shoin. The Japanese edition of Crying Freeman vol. 1 that Viz used when making their book was different from the one which we used, which was published during a period in Japan that was more conservative with regard to sexual content. I feel it is very important to make it clear that none of the changes to the artwork that you see between the Viz edition and our edition were imposed by us; these changes were made by the Japanese company that currently holds the rights to this property. And indeed, in terms of art, no changes whatsoever were made to make our edition different from the most current Japanese edition (which Mr. Koike prefers).

So I'll be supporting other releases(sp? for some reason) how about you fine folks?

I bought volume 1 a few weeks ago and loved it, cept for those mosiacs. Correct me if im wrong but Isn't Koike just the writer? Why would I give a damn what he prefers when Ryoichi Ikegami illustrated it? Censorship of any kind blows but at least it sits better with me knowing that it wasn't Dark Horse that did it. Alright, enough of the bitching and on to the praising! I liked volume 1 a great deal especially...

Spoiler:

How many volumes total?

9 volumes in total. The original VIZ release had six but that was because the combined some of the volumes from other chapters. For example vol.1 had what the original vol.1 had plus the first four chapters from vol.2
