Recovering data

So I had a bunch of data involving school on a USB drive. Well it looks like I lost it and I am freaking out at the moment. Is there any way to recover the data or am I just screwed?

Do you mean you lost the USB drive itself or that the data in it was erased? If you lost the drive itself, then I don't think you'll ever be able to recover it. And even if it got erased, I don't know if it'll work like a hard-drive, where you can recover information back from it as long as nothing has been written over the sections it was stored in.

If you flat out lost the drive, the only way to "recover" the data is to get it back, or pray that you backed up your files somewhere else (like your PC).

Otherwise you're out of luck, you can't do much if you don't even have the drive in question.

Well, don't worry... You're not the first person who's lost an USB drive and won't be the last. I lost mine too a couple of months ago, but luckily I did everything on my desktop and only then I'd copy the files over to the USB. It's a life-saving habit, that I'll tell you.

In the future, go for redundancy. Back important things up to a USB drive, and then back those up to your hard drive(s).

If you're lucky, someone will find the drive, stick it into their computer, get your information, and then try to contact you. We did this once when someone left a drive in one of our lab computers (even though we felt guilty about snooping).

Absolutely - data redundancy is your best-friend. You can save your information to a USB drive, your computer, and to a regular back up (Windows Backup, Ghost, etc...).

Well I have a bittersweet situation here now. I found an older file with about 5/8 of the material I had. I have a good deal back, but not all. Still better than being at 0. Glad I accidently saved this to my PC than the USB.

There is always good to backup your data, accidently or not
