I wonder, what would be the "official" ending of this game? Because obviously there will be spin-offs.

I think even though we can probably cause the extinction of a few races in ME3, the canon would save them all. After all, it would be a waste of alien designs to not able to use the art assets again.

We know that the canon Shepard would be the male one. But would he get a canon lovelife?

As in, would we get to find out which partner Shepard ended up with? It's sort of unavoidable, but we know there is going to be large chucks of the shippers who would be disappointed no matter which path Bioware take with it.

Any spinoffs, if they're smart, will focus on people other than Shepard anyway. Shepard's story will most likely end with ME3, but there's an entire galaxy to explore. Any number of characters to create and fill the shoes of main character.

But here is why they might HAVE to poke that hornet's nest...

In order for popular characters like Tali to reappear in future spin-offs, we would end up finding out where they end up after the war.

What's worse? Having your favourite pairing dashed, or never see that character in a future game again? Can you imagine Tali, Miranda, and Liara being wiped from the franchise and never make a guest appearance in spinoffs? I don't see it.

That's why I strongly believe there will be a canon route. The famous squad members have to make new appearances in the future, which means they need to have their relationships resolved. Hopefully the players would be too distracted by the new games to be hurt too badly for their sunken Ships.

I am not sure I know what you mean. Bioware won't finalise the events of the game until AFTER they start making the spin-offs. The ME3 game won't tell me what would be canon. Only future games and books will.

No they don't. Not at all. A popular character can easily appear with not a word of whom they did or did not hook up with. As anime fans we should be well familiar with the tons of ways to be ambiguous regarding that.

That depends on how much of a cameo they get. And they are going to write a few books eventually.

I just think Bioware would be better off to write a canon end later. By then there would be a new main lead, new threat, new characters to romance. They already made a few ME 1 and 2 events canon. Ashley, for example, survived ME1. And she almost certainly was the canon romance choice in the first game.

Which will be $10 DLC, since Bioware thought only "long time fans" would enjoy that ending.

Edit: To actually add something to the discussion, I agree the canon ending will probably the light side conclusion resulting from full completion plus DLC.
