I had picked up this series a while go thanks to a certain blogger on the net and was instantly hooked by the character and story. Although a few things surprise me when I started reading through this thread:

A few people are dissatisfy with the anime adaptation and some aspect of romance. It's probably me but after the first episode I always thought at a later stage a Wakaba clone was going to join the cast, probably cliche and a good way for the mangaka to stir drama and extend the series.

Finally caught up with this series at episode 39. Whew! I am impressed. If I tried to tell anyone what it was about, it would sound boring, no matter what I said. And yet it manages to stay interesting all the time, without panty shots, demons, magic, aliens or severed heads. I wonder if this is an example of the Zen practice of mindfulness: When you open your heart's eyes, there is never a moment where nothing happens.

I am glad Yuuhei Azuma has taken an interest in a girl, even if it is Aoba Tskishima, after all this time of making excuses to stay near Kou Kitamura. She may be one of the most boyish anime heroines I can think of, to the point where even Kou and Aoba are unable to see which of them Akane Takigawa has portrayed in her winning picture. But she is still a girl in some ways.

Akane is given a lot of depth for someone who could have been simply a plot device. I was amused by how she made Kou pay her back for seeing her bare upper body in the window, by making him pose in his own window for several minutes for her drawing. And giving the boys their amulet dolls at different times also strikes me as a plan more than an accident. Although I wonder what will come of it if Kou ever displays his amulet where Akaishi Osamu can see it. Has she counted on this as well?

All in all, a story with surprising depth. I hope to see more of it in the future.

Seeing more converts to the Church of Kitamura Kou always puts a smile on my face.

Perhaps, in the end, Akane's role will be crucial in this sense: maybe she's the only one that can give Kou and Aoba the inferred blessing they seek from Wakaba. No doubt being at Clover will show her just how deeply intertwined Kou and Aoba are, and no doubt they each for their own reasons feel that admitting their feelings would be a betrayal of Wakaba.

I love Cross Game

Happy New Year folks. Finally got around to watching it despite the busy holidays. I thought it was a great slow moving episode with more character development. Here is the synopsis & review with pictures for those interested.

Well, I broke down and finally watched the episode. As always hats off to the seiyuus and to the sound director. A good adaptation isn't only made from good base material, but also from the effort from everyone in the anime team.

In any case, during this episode we were made aware of everyone positions towards each other, even if most of the signals the were sending were subtle or plain contradictory. Things should be getting interesting, specially with the prefecture tournament coming soon. Go, go Ryoh! Make history in anime by defeating the protagonists and making everything even more complicated than it already is.

To me the most interesting development is the revelation that Akane (like Wakaba) strongly believes in destiny or fate.

I didn't see that coming.

To make it worse, Natsu no Arashi and Seitokai no Ichizon ended last week - so I have withdrawal from all of the three shows that really have characters that draw me in. It's a tough weekend, anime-wise.

I've never had the patience to play a game with a dictionary alongside me. I guess I will try to see if my meager Japanese can get me somewhere, but somehow I highly doubt it.

Anyway, during this Cross Game break I recommend people to go and watch it's older brother Touch, also by Adachi. Cross Game gives off a more finished work feeling, and overall Touch may be a little more rough on the edges, but still it is a great watch, and highly worth your time.
