Lovely ep, marred somewhat by a few instances of obviously subpar animation. Oh, and creepy Maria's lower lip annoys me more every time I see it, it's goddamn huge.

That said, this EP is really a lot more solid than the adaptation of EP1 so far, and II-2 earns a 9/10 in my book.

What's the significance of the new Beatrice being dressed up like a school girl? Seems too weird to be just fanservice.

It's a mystery. In this episode, Beato seems to suggest that Suit-Beato is her as a piece on the game board.

Overall, a very good episode. Some things won't come out as well as the VN because of the nature of anime, but for once, it looks like Deen used almost perfect pacing on the whole. The introduction to the meta-world was a little sudden, but it was like that in the VN version too.

At the very least, EP2 is turning out better than EP1, and that can only be a good sign for the rest of the series.

By the way, I think I've spotted the true culprit. Damn Deen for releasing non-VN spoilers!

First off, the pacing was good (though I agree it did FEEL rushed for some reason even though I know it isn't...), and they did the proposal scene and some of the Maria and Rosa scenes pretty well.

Now for the bad.

First off, I feel they absolutely SLAUGHTERED the first Meta-World scene. I don't mind they did the time freeze thing and weren't in the Tea Room all that much (though it did make me go 'wut'), but it lost all impact. No finger point, no music pick up... hell they didn't even let Answer get to the best part of the song.

Kanon and Shannon delivering lunch and dinner respectfully also had no tension. Kanon gave in far too easily, despite being the one to try and resist her until the end up to this point, and Shannon didn't really 'stand up to her'... she just seemed to kind of shrug her off. Beatrice didn't even seem perturbed by it. Shannon was supposed to make her REALLY mad here.

Overall it just seems like all the scenes that were supposed to be really good, weren't. I can give things passes on pacing, but I can't ignore weakening the scenes.

Guh...it's the pacing problems again as well as some serious lack of development for the characters...sometimes I really wish they would narrate some "inner thoughts" of the characters so we can get a sense of what is actually making them tick. I mean plainly from the anime's view, Rosa is just a nutcase but asides of that, there should be another feeling that she should have shown to the viewers which she currently isn't. Other characters like Kanon is totally being misrepresented and it is hard to feel for his situation when his personality has somewhat changed due to there being a lack of development. That scene of him licking Beatrice's shoe felt VERY underwhelming and insignificant when it shouldn't be that way at all.

And that is a problem when I don't feel like I can give a damn about what happens to the characters.

The meta world is being completely screwed up altogether. Forget Maria's lol fang, where is my tea party room? Now I fear what quick fix they are going to put forward in the future when we are left without a "base" for Battler and Beatrice to have their chess game.

The pacing was better than the first arc but it is still disappointing nonetheless.

Well, as I said on the first page of this thread,

I imagine later on the "tea room" will appear too, maybe randomly built into the real world ... like, they're in the parlor, for example, and suddenly there's a little alcove with the tea room. Or a door suddenly appears in the wall and Beato opens it and you enter the tea room. I would like that.

I always felt like the "tea room" would be pretty restrictive for an anime, and that it would be a very bad idea to translate that literally from the VN. There needs to be a fluidity and blurring of the lines so that the meta-characters can have access to the game board better. I'm sure we'll see "tea room" scenes at some point, and hopefully it won't be a jarring cut to a separate location, because that would be bad, bad, bad.

Look, the real world IS the chess game. They aren't just sitting down and playing it, they are walking amongst the pieces. I always got the impression that this was an important part of the meta-world in the game, but that it was difficult to express it in confines of the VN format.

What I quite like about how the VN showed off the meta world was that it really was in a completely "different world", like one above all reality where the "controller" (IE Beatrice in this case) is able to get a view of the game in bird eye's view. What it should be, to me, is that the viewers should realise that there is another world that transcends above the physical human level which makes their knowledge, as a chess piece, pretty insignificant and small.

I think the game does it well in giving me an impression of how the "game" is being played on such a higher level that can all be concealed within a single room and where "portals/screens" leading to the events of the real world can be seen. And it isn't like the people of the higher level isn't able to transcend onto the gaming board either such as what we see here in this episode as an example, but for the main bit, the battle should take place in a dim-lit and elegant tea party room worthy of the grand witch Beatrice.

If the scenes just concentrated on the lower level (ie just walking around amongst the pieces) then something is wrong, but I am sure a "room" will come sooner or later...god forbid if it is the one that was shown when Beatrice and Bern had their nice chat. I'm not looking for a bright-white jail cell

Well, don't forget that the majority of meta world scenes in EP2 take place with the game board showing in the background. Probably best if we don't confuse the later EPs with EP2.

To be honest, I think it's way too early to judge Deen on this one. Let's wait for some more episodes to come out before getting too involved in an argument on either side. Just like the asthma, it doesn't matter if they change the order of certain revelations as long as it all fits together in the end.

In Episode 3, it says he walks around and kicks the ground in the rain, but he doesn't get wet.

I found myself sympathetic to Rosa. Having a small child is such a hassle. Being a single mother can't help either. Yeah, Maria really should shut up and pay attention around. A nine-year old taking candy from strangers? Really.

I don't know, My respect for Rosa went up a bunch this episode. Rosa should have pulled off a spanking at the mansion then and there!!!

Anyway, I wonder what was written in those two envelopes?

I've always pictured Battler and Beato to abruptly appear in scenes along with the pieces in the game board, while at time they are in the tea room. What I'm wondering about is the transition.
