Suisei no Gargantia - Overall Series Impressions & Total Series Rating

This thread is to be used for discussing the entire episodes of Suisei no Gargantia ... your thoughts about the show, overall impressions, expectations and hopes about Blu-Ray/DVD-exclusive footage etc.

A few subjects you might want to ramble on about:
  • General impression of the series.
  • Opinions on the overall story, writing & plot devices.
  • Thoughts about the animation quality.
  • Characters/Character Design
  • Voice Acting
  • Which kind of footage (Blu-Ray/DVD-exclusive) you feel you'd really like to see.
  • What the show meant to you.
  • What could the creators/animators/writers have done better.

And so on.

The poll represents your total series rating. In other words, how you would rate all the episodes combined (1-10)? If you'd rather rate the whole series by technical/artistic merits, you can do so. An example:

Animation Quality: 1-10
Voice Actors: 1-10
Script: 1-10
Soundtrack: 1-10
Editing: 1-10
Enjoyment: 1-10
Emotional Involvement: 1-10

Average = Total Series Rating

Or a combination of the two. Or your general gut feeling.

Feel free to discuss and more importantly, have fun

Like I've been saying, it should've been 24-25 eps, and should've been written by only one person (not necessarily Gen). I also would've liked a bit more tension and elements of danger, especially in the last few.

But the characters were still likeable. Despite her dearth of development, girls like Amy are part of the reason I got into anime in the first place, heh. (Not tsunderes.) Hopefully some of the OAV's might shed more light on her background. And in the end it stuck to its coming-of-age, finding-your-place message very well.

Plus as an American wearied by so many years of war, I'm also pleased to see a show that doesn't emphasize the need for a heroic sacrifice for once (at least not by the human...sorry).

Overall I'd have to say 7.7/10. Needed perhaps a bit less black and white too, but I don't get how some people can call it the worst show of the year.

The belly dancing episode is kinda not needed, so is the BBQ scene. Those are waste of time considering it is 13 episode run.

I wished they give more insight into the GA at the beginning so viewers can see the contrast of space Nazi military government that is deterministic versus free will and choice adopted by survivors on Gargantia fleet, maybe 2-3 episodes on the GA alone. That will make the story much more poignant when Red/Ledo make the decisions to rebel against his commanding officer later.

Occasional flashes of brilliance, a tiny bit more fluff than ideal, a generally likable cast with some bright spots, some interesting twists and turns, good visual quality, and a largely satisfying ending - It's a solid 8 for me.

It lacked a certain spark, or the sense of "Wow, I'm watching a masterpiece here", that it usually takes for me to give out 9s and 10s. But it was just short of that. So yeah, a solid 8.

It started out with a lot of potential to earn a masterpiece rank, only to be slightly bogged down by the not-so-consistent middle episodes. It's been said many times before, but I felt that SnG could do without Episode 5, or at least have it combined with Episode 6. Well, at least the final episode concluded the story nicely.

The show lacks a certain "oomph" factor that could've made it much better, but it was still enjoyable, overall. I'd give it a 7.5/10.

If there is one thing about this anime that I liked, it was the atmosphere. It's quite charming.

However, story-wise, it wasn't really that good. There were some "shocking" revelations, but well, that's about it.
The first half had too much of the stupid captain crew blaming the protagonist for not knowing anything, despite them always keeping him in the dark.
Then the "OMG, those squids were once human" came along, which wasn't bad itself. But then the climax. I don't really mind that the fact the guy was actually dead was predictable, but everything other than that was so sudden.
That OPPAI pirate suddenly started liking Penion, which is fine itself, but she clearly started liking him way too quickly. And how much have they interacted? 4 minutes total?
The final boss was a berserk robot. Great.
To be honest, the fact those squids were human didn't really play a role in the final arc. Sure, maybe they had some influence, but despite being what seemed be the big surprise of this anime, it didn't have enough influence.
Not enough about the settling of the entire mess, be it the cult people and whatever that was left to settle.

And despite the good atmosphere, the anime loved adding extra ecchi stuff for whatever the reason. Be it that strip dance thing or the overly EXAGGERATED breasts on the end card.

But it was refreshing to watch. Especially with the template harem light novels and otaku-aiming material (that are out of place) swarming around anime these days.
So 7/10.

I really enjoyed this, nothing about it was masterful, but I felt it's still a cut above most "good' series.
The animation was solid, while not a fan of the mechanism designs I can't really fault them for doing something different.
The voice acting was kinda hit and miss, I was impressed by Ledo's VA in some eps. and completely underwhelmed the next.
I believe Urobutcher wrote the script for episode 1 and assisted with the overall series composition. I'll have to fact check that later, but I'm inclined to believe it to be true based on the high quality of the story taken as a whole. This takes place in a universe that felt if not real, at least believable, along with analogue to the modern day.
When I thought Urobutcher was running the show I refused to get attached to any specific character because I assumed it would be his usual bloodbath.

Overall I guess about an 8. I know, I know I said some bad things above but it still didn't keep me from loving this series.

7.5 but I rounded up to 8 on the poll.

Not a memorable anime. It's not full of gaping flaws but I didn't really care what happened to anyone once Ledo was first allied with Gargantia. Everything else that happened afterwards felt like soft filler. I find the development throughout to be far too fragmented and ultimately irrelevant to each other.

I'm not going to bother writing long post. Just want to ponder something; what kind of ultimate message this show has been trying to convey us? Because i can't seem to find one. Which is sad given this is Butcher's show.

It's unfortunate, but i can only give Gargantia 6/10

I am at least waiting for the OVAs and I am still hoping for a 2nd season... else my opinion of this series would be probably lower than I thought it would, because the ending felt way too rushed!

Uro said he wanted it to be a show for teens entering the real world and to give them the confidence to face it, in which case I feel like it did well.

There were a lot of themes explored in the show centered around Ledo.

Ledo came from a bubble of the Galactic Alliance. It's similar to high school for a lot of people. Don't really get to experience too much life outside of it, in Ledo's case it was the extreme of not knowing any life outside of it.

His arrival on Gargantia and it's people is like a teen thrust into the "real" world after school. Lots of different people and customs and things to do you aren't aware of. His meeting of people from Amy to those cross-dressers shows that you'll meet tons of people in the world. Some you like, some make you uncomfortable, some you find endearing, and some that make you sad.

The contrast between the GA and Gargantia's society. Ledo learned that everyone has their purpose in the world. We sometimes forget that as humans. Asian schools in particular use the public ranking system a lot for grades and scores. In the workforce, things seem to always be about ranks, who's useful and stuff, but in that people tend to forget they all have value.

Those fun, relaxing days were vital to Ledo IMO. It showed him what life not as a soldier is like, and began his forming of memories and bonds with people like Amy.
It also was a message to the audience to slow down and enjoy life occasionally. In Asian particularly, teens are always busy going to class for hours, and then sometimes going to cram schools. I think this is the teams view that there is more to life than just working.

The cult and their reverence for Kugel's figure seems to show a parallel between blind worship of...well anything. Growing up, we're fed many different beliefs and ideals by family, friends, peers, society, etc. Some of us never question it in the slightest, and I think the writers wanted to show that we should, and we should be more inquisitive, since not everything is what it seems and we rarely know the whole story.

It all ends up culminating in Ledo realizing the value of human life, how every single one is important. He ends valuing the time he spent with people, and learned to believe in himself, something that can be difficult for people to do.

There are some things I didn't like
-The hideazue story was interesting, but it didn't really come full-circle. It didn't even go 3/4 of a circle lol. Like, it made an impact on Ledo, but that seemed to fade when he found Kugel. What really made him decide for himself was Striker's sights on Gargantia.
-Last episodes needed more Amy
-I think the last episode needed to be 5-10 minutes longer to be fantastic
-Some things still don't make sense, like how Kugel ended up on Earth. Or how Ledo did even.
-The commander's death could have been more impactful had his character been explored more. Those talks Doctor had with Ledo might have been better on Commander.

Overall this was the best series of the season for me, and I'm excited for the OVA's

"All of this sea and sky will surely give you possibilities. Survive. Explore. I expect great achievements from your life."

Episode 5~6, while thematically vital to Ledo's development, could've been written better while providing more chemistry with and between the 3 delivery girls. While Ledo, and Chamber, had gone through great character developments, I feel like as the poster girl for the series Amy would do worlds or good if we saw more of her changed by Ledo's presence. Otherwise I'm quite content with how everything ties up altogether in the end. As said by Bebel in the end, "If we know where we came from, then we can think about where we should go", Ledo is able to move on forward once he saw the truth behind the war which he previously dedicated his life toward. His time on Gargantia made him appreciate the life of fellow human being more, even those that are weak, disorganised, and unfit. His discovery about the WhaleSquid made him question the justification of the war and conflict in general. His confrontation with Kugel/Striker allows him to reflect upon how headless he was back in the days blindly following orders. Once the last piece of shackle, the technology of GA that's known as Chambers, was removed, he's able to live on as an independent human being, independent from the system, independent from the nurture of the support AI. Not to mention, he's now acting as am ambassador into getting to understand the WhaleSquid better in order to build up possible communication, indirectly atoning for the sins his ancestors committed early for initiating that continual war.

Technically speaking the show is great, the visual looks vibrant and beautiful. The integration between the CGI Chamber and the rest of the crew looks smooth. The fight scene in the last couple of episodes looks fantastic. In terms of music, there's one track that will haunt me ever since its introduction in ep9. For anyone that's interested it's on Disc 2 Track 9, the one played during the first half of that news reel footage.

Overall, great thematic concept and idea, and a strong ending, but having too many guest writers muddle up the execution in the middle when it's the most crucial. I'm floating around 7~8 and will probably just settle for halfway at 7.5/10. Episode 4 remain the highlight of this series with its simplicity and poignancy.

When looking at Gen's recent anime works - Madoka Magica, Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass, and now Gargantia - I see a fairly consistent theme.

That theme is in spoiler space below...

Spoiler for Major spoilers on Gen-wrote anime shows:

I won't give a detailed rating on this

but the story is very good actually... Urobuchi always now how to catch us off guard
I like the biological-engineered concept.. and of course the mix between sophisticated technology and ancient one

background music is so so
character design also nothing special but not bad as well

animation quality is very good!
and lastly, emotional involvement is indeed very good
(first I hate hideauze... then I hate Chamber... then I love Chamber again... Chamber is indeed the best character in this anime)

Unfortunately, I kinda think Gargantia is one of those shows that actually looks worse in hindsight. It really does play out like it was written by committee, and suffers hard from the too-many-cooks syndrome, and as a lot of us have opined, it really should've run for two seasons instead of just one, for all the ground it was trying to cover.

They say Gen was a "script advisor". Does that mean he personally reviewed each script not written by him, or he just gave the writers the main things he and Murata thought should happen in each episode and let them fill things in however they wanted? I've heard Murata had the Waterworld-esque idea kicking around in his head for a long time; did he just get Urobuchi on board for the name recognition?
Spoiler for gargantia/madoka spoilers:

Of course, the SOL elements were where the show really shone, and the shaky sci-fi half still features some interesting ethical and philosophical questions which you don't hear about in SnK discussions. And lastly, the OVA doesn't look like it'll help with the show's tangles. From what I could gather from the preview, a lot of the dialog seems to read out like a Scooby-Doo parody (Amy: L-Ledo-kun, we can't go in there! There's g-g-g-GHOSTS! Ledo: Oh come on, Amy. There's no such thing as ghosts. Yessir, no such thing as ghosts.) And if they wanted to broaden Ridget's character more, they really, really should've made the anime at least 24 episodes and focused on her some more there. (On top of that, it's also a shame that they didn't flesh out Amy more. As much as I can't stand SAO, I have to admit she isn't much rounder (....characterwise) than ultimate love interest/tool Asuna. (Though I don't quite get why she gets so much hate on Anime Planet in particular.)

In the end, I think I might have to give a 7 to this show at best.

I still think that Gargantia is a solid 8/10 overall for me, but it's the most likely of Gen's recent works to go down the memory hole for me.

Even now, my only lasting takeaways for Gargantia are...

1) Chamber was an excellent and memorable character that went out in style.

2) It sure was purdy.

Aaaand... that's pretty much it. It was a good show, but not a very memorable one. Mind you, if it ever gets a sequel, that could change things.

After watching the first episode, I decided to drop the anime. The concept art might be excellent, but like Kamichu (same artist), the writer wanted to tell a story that I wasn't interested in. In this case, though the writer is known for not running away from controversial thematology, and is rarely didactic towards his audience, following a more dialectic approach and giving solid arguments to both protagonists and antagonists. Still until the genocide episode, I was not convinced that a greater conflict was probable, but happened and very well executed at both character and setting level.

What I would have liked to see more, are episodes focusing on the daily lives on both fleets that the mecha landed, as well as the pirates (those abhorred episodes with belly-dancing and BBQ that are targeted by "high" criticism), but I understand that there had to be a balanced between world-building and conflict, and in any case they are already the focus of doujinshi. The final battle action could have been shorter, but I guess fanservice is very hard to cut down since it is a main source of income for the producers. It also burned a lot of the animation budget, that the slice-of-life episodes lacked.

Well, this didn't suck like certain circles would have me believe. It's a little stronger than Psycho Pass for having more than just the main lead be interesting on top of better developed relationships. At the same time, the whole character arc involving Mr Salvager while interesting feels out of nowhere, because the biggest problem Gargantia has is feeling like two different shows connected by one character in Ledo. It's kind of unfortunate too, 'cause the first 2/3 or so of the series convinces me Urobuchi knows how to write slice of life.

Cool show. And I don't mean that sarcastically this time.
