So just finished watching the episode, and as was basically announced and suspected, the episode is essentially a recap with a bit of an extra story (about one episode worth of new content or so). Mostly I would say it's just a chance to see the cast in action again, which is clearly (again, as suspected) to drum up a little bit of excitement for the upcoming second season.
The recap portion is framed around Kirito being interviewed (yet again) about what happened during SAO/ALO, and doesn't really give any new insights or anything. Even some of the more obvious questions about what happened were asked, and they didn't provide any additional explanations. While this is happening, we cut away to the girls teaching Suguha to swim, and also reminiscing a bit about their time in SAO/ALO and how they met Kirito. The new portion at the end centered around an ALO quest in an underwater dungeon, which they embarked on after Yui remarked that she had never seen a whale. The quest was ostensibly about fetching an item and returning it to the NPC, but obviously there was a catch. We also get a bit of a backstory that helps explain why Suguha had been afraid of water, and further expanding on her past with Kazuto just a bit. It feels very much like an "omake" episode that would follow Episode 25. Mostly, again, I would say it was a chance to see everyone in action again, so in that sense it was nice. I don't think it'll change anyone's impressions about the anime one way or another, but was a fun watch, and served its purpose of bringing the show back to mind in prep for the sequel.

I also think the episode existed for two main reasons.
1. To recap. 2. To introduce the guy Kirito was talking with... after all the episode ended with Kirito getting a phone-call by that guy from the government (and he didn't answer it yet)... He also told Kirito that he'd see him again. Well, since season 2 was just announced, it seems pretty obvious that things will pick up where they left off at the end of that special with the phone call... (though Kirito could just ignore him for a bit ) |

Finally watched the Extra Edition. I have to say, it was a good episode, especially when Kirito, Asuna, and their friends are back to take a brand-new quest in ALO.
Still, it would be nice if they ditch the recap... But anyways, looking forward for the next season! |

All I can really say is.... That was probably a new height of shameless fan service for the franchise. It's kind of impressive how they managed to steer just about any topic back onto the girl's boobs...... ^^*
All the problems I have with the main series continue, so it wasn't for me at all, though I guess fans and those who like rom coms will enjoy it

I didn't really keep up with the show after the first few episodes, but the format used here seemed to help give a rough sense of what to take away from the two arcs from season 1.
(It's the first time I've seen Suguha/Leafa, too.) I'm not sure I'll stick around for season 2, but we'll see.

Was great seeing the cast again, not to mention Asuna and Silica look great as a Undine and Werecat. Too much recap, just way too much. The new stuff was a fun watch at least.

My (not so fancy) list of the time: Spoiler for Time for new and old content (spoiler for space):
If I counted right, there is exactly 41 minutes and 33 seconds of new content. Which in turn means that there is a whopping 59 minutes of recap!!! Quite excessive if you ask me...

Watched this pretty much skipping all the recap playbacks. Fanservice was tasteful; very cute, nothing overly lewd. Underwater quest was fun, though nothing special. Still it was great to see them actually do something party-mmo-like for once. Hope to see more of that in future arcs.
Anyone found it funny that Yui said she really wanted to ride a whale, but ended up riding Pina who was riding the whale? |

I can't believe I sat through the whole thing and actually enjoyed it even after re-watching the whole series last week. I'm really surprised that there was a lot of new content especially at the end. I thought it was going to be 90% recap and 10% new content, but it was much more than that.
Glad to see Silica and Lizbeth back again. Wait so season 2 just announced? |
