I guess you should get down to CLANNAD (esp. the After Story) about now. The romance part is about to begin.

Fate Stay Night -> It is more action / fantasy anime but the ending of this series is definitly the most bitter sweet romance i've seen so far... sad but without tears...

Other romance animes i liked:

Air
Kanon
Clannad
Hantsuki
Myself; Yourself

Kanon 2006. Okay, so it's more of a drama-series that has a romance subplot, but whatevah. I did see Clannad on your "plan to watch"-list, and that's pretty much Kanon's spiritual sequel, so if you end up enjoying one of them, it's very likely that you'd also like the other one.

Bokura ga Ita is the best romance anime I've seen. It has an indescribable aura and it's an emotional rollercoaster from beginning to end.

Honey & Clover (1 & 2) is not only about love, but about life in general. However, it can't be missed. An unforgettable journey.

Whisper of the Heart. My favourite anime movie, pure poetry at its best.

Aishiteruze Baby, sweet and heartwarming. Not a "romance anime", but romance has an important part in it.

Kimikiss - pure rouge, the most recent in this list. Very well done, and enjoyable.

Suzuka is another anime which I'm quite fond of (it's actually the anime that brought me here on AS).

I notice many of the recommendations are "guy chooses girl out of pack" harem ..... assuming you want to avoid those for the most part based on your thread tags. Some of those are very good ones though (e.g. Kanon, etc).

The currently running Toradora! is turning into an excellent comedy-romance-drama anime. Ensemble cast around an oddball pair.

Kannagi is very well executed as a supernatural-comedy with romance possible (still running) though it is "a guy with several girls" that isn't the core of the story.

Kurozuka is a very intense romance... but its also quite gory and violent (involving a vampire, her samurai lover, and a pursuit over several hundred years by a clan seeking immortality).

Lovely*Complex --- very excellent comedy-romance-drama. Its a complete series with no trainwreck. Also known as Lov*Com or Love*Com.

Lamune --- straightforward slow percolating romance between a pair of childhood friends.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time --- this one is licensed and on the shelf at Rightstuf.com, etc.

5cm/second --- a 3 part short story. Pretty bittersweet but stunning art and animation. Licensed and available.

REC --- 9 15 minute episodes of a great romantic comedy with a very unusual introductory episode.

I seldom watch romance animes, cause i always fall asleep watching it. But there are a few that I actually like.

True Tears - You have this kind of adrenaline rush before watching it and after watching it, cause the episode often ends on a cliffhanger. And i keep guessing from one girl to another, to the point I gave up. The one interesting thing that i like abt love triangles are it never fails to amuse me, cause i have fun guessing who he/she will choose. In the case of True Tears, i really enjoyed it.

Ef- Ef is quite slow moving actually. And the love stories in it aren't that great either. However, the animation and the method Shaft present the mood and tone of the story is a good enough reason for anyone to watch.
