yes, that one, I translated it like that becuase i read the spanish version. ryukishi also talked a bit about that in the last part queen letter; basically, erika was stuck at level 3 or so of the cases mayeb if natsuhi had accepted kinzo's death she might have arrived to a better conclusion/closer to the culprit; but it looks like (board) the family cared more about making natsuhi accept kinzo was dead and (meta) bern cared more about proving that a human could have done it.
Beatrice, but more specifically any wielder of the Endless Magic.
It goes Certainty > Endless > 'Miracles' > Certainty.
These three types of witches, barring witches of truth and resurrection... seem to remind me of the three styles of debate.
Pathos, Logos, and Ethos.
That is, passion, logic, and ethics.
I wonder which is which.

I wonder which is which.
Certainty - Passion (you can accomplish something as long as you put your mind to it)
Endless - Ethics (just because you can break something doesn't mean you should)
Logic - Miracles (miracles are miracles because they don't happen - common logic )
Certainty - Passion (you can accomplish something as long as you put your mind to it)
Endless - Ethics (just because you can break something doesn't mean you should)
Logic - Miracles (miracles are miracles because they don't happen - common logic )
That's how I see it myself.
Ah! I had viewed it at
certainty = logic
endless = ethics (last throughout time.. well not truley, as they shift with each generation, but meh.)
and miracles to be passion, because miracles is technically the power of probability, and it speaks to me the same way a woman can lift a car to save her child. In NO OTHER circumstance, would that occur, imho, unless she was a bodybuilder or something, and it makes the probability low, however we know it to be adrenaline, etc. but it is still described as a miracle. does this make sense?

Reason: for editing. i need a reason to edit?
the last queen part and the The Poisoned Chocolates Case bring to this teh idea that no matter how good a detective is, if there are lacking clues he won't get tothe correct solution of a case even fi the solution itself is good and logical. Like in erika's case, since natushi refused to accept kinzo's and krauss death status that made her the culprit on that theory.
Great notes This looks fun! I personally would've put George and Eva's arranged marriage talk in there because I think it's important, but great job mapping it out.

Maybe I'll try mapping it out some too.
In my defense, I'm only jotting down the stuff that interests me the most. I will add a single bullet point to my final publication, though. Just for you!
Edit: Here's five bullet points:
- Marriage meeting: George knew what Eva meant when she said, "You know, that topic?"
- Intended strategy of marriage meeting: allow time for friendship to develop, then initiate engagement and marriage at an appropriate time. Then move her to the family register.
- "If you marry based on emotions, you'll definitely regret it." -Eva
- Isn't that rude to Hideyoshi? -Jessica
- I love him! We built up those feelings while we were husband and wife. A marriage is instant. -Eva
But really, I see this as more of R07's plot device to showcase Eva's irritation with Shannon than useful specificity.
Kind of going off on a tangent here, but it's been on my mind, so...
There has been some discussion about the concept that "When Kanon dies, he's actually just discarding his life as 'furniture' and taking back his real name". I've had a problem with this explanation for a while now, and I think I can finally put my feelings into words.
Let me propose a hypothetical scenario to you: In my basement, I have a large vault. There is only one door to the vault. Once that door is closed, it can only be opened from the outside. There are absolutely no ways in or out of the vault other than the single door. There is no place in this vault that a person could hide. And, for good measure Noone has ever died in this vault.
Now then, I grab 10 random people off the street and lock them inside. Only 10 people entered this vault! They were locked inside and had no way to leave. I leave them in there for a few hours, and when I open it back up, everyone in the vault is dead (suffocated probably...).
Now then, this is when things get real: 14 people died in this vault! All of them died in the last hour! After the vault was locked, noone else was able to enter or leave!
Are you starting to get where my problem lies? There are more victims than there were people in the vault. How do I explain this? Easy- one of the people in there had multiple personalities. 5 total personalities in fact. If I count each of the extra persona as an individual person, I can easily have more 'victims' than I have 'people' in the vault. This seems to be the general thinking of the people supporting the theory that when Kanon 'dies' he's just discarding that name and life, and taking back his real one.
But this is where my problem lies- this means you're holding the red to a double standard. If an alternate personality counts as a individual person in terms of being dead, shouldn't they also count as an individual when they are alive? There are no more than 17 people on this island! In the above scenario, either I would have had to say 14 people entered this vault and later died or 10 people etc etc. I can't have 14 victims come out of 10 people.
... Let's not conjure up victims out of thin air.
Also, admittedly, the Shannon=Kanon theory might get around this, but it rather negates the point of the theory in the first place- the whole point of the theory was to create room for a 17th person to come into the story without violating the red. And if we're counting Shannon and Kanon as individuals, even if they are two persona of the same person, that just leaves us with the same 17 people we had in the first place.
Did you ever get the sense that Shannon actually pulled it off? I didn't. Eva always seemed repulsed by the idea, even on the game board.
I'm not sure what you're asking here. Let me rephrase:
Shannon had the opportunity to betray Krauss and gain George. There's no evidence that she did so. (Minor support of the "Shannon doesn't return George's feelings" hypothesis.)
Also: Why would Kinzo's body still be on Rokkenjima? Krauss could have sailed out a few miles, weighed down Kinzo's corpse, and thrown it overboard. Why keep it around?
Anybody know how well a charred corpse would be preserved? (Isn't smoking meat a form of preservation?)
Kind of going off on a tangent here, but it's been on my mind, so...
Don't worry. At least some of us respect the Decalogue.

Were you trying to rephrase my suggestion? Then you'd be correct. I do not get the impression that Shannon coerced Eva into making the Shannon-George marriage acceptable by providing some dirt on Krauss/Natsuhi. Why? Because Eva is still against the marriage, regardless of the circumstances.
If you weren't rephrasing me, then maybe we're more on the same track than we think. I do support the "Shannon doesn't return George's feelings" hypothesis.
As for Kinzo's body, stupid is as stupid does. Regardless, I have no doubt that his body is there. And there are no professional coroners on the island. Also, an island like Rokkenjima is a controlled environment.

Reason: addendum, and I toned it down a bit.
Episode 2 Map, version 5.0
(5.0 means that I watched EP 5, and this is my first iteration. The next iteration would be 5.1, if I apply it. When that happens, I will forward you to this updated post.)
Most of my thoughts are integrated with the individual scenes. It still needs some sheep-wolves analysis.
And these two question are bugging me:
- Is it possible that Beatrice gave Maria the envelope with the key long after the scene where they met? After all, Rosa witnessed magic, right?
- We never see Rosa open the envelope in her posession. Where did it go? Did she read it at the parents' discussion and reseal it, or did it end up in the Parlor in the last scene? Or better yet, did Beatrice meet up with Maria again and hand her another envelope with the key?
By the way, Rosa really strikes me as innocent in this episode.
1) She pukes all over the floor.
2) It was established in red that she always had all five master keys in her posession, except when she handed one to Battler for the moment.
Spoiler for How did this get so huge?:
Spoiler for In Search of Shannon's Heart:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ George x Shannon Date, Mirror, Eva:
Points:
- George narrates the George x Shannon date.
- The tank is the entire world to a fish. -Shannon
- Eating like "snobs". Shannon included.
- Teasing Shannon is so much fun. -George
- Magic gave us the power to meet like this. -Shannon
- Call me George.
- Call me Sayo. (Following suit?)
- Two fates, separated by a mirror.
- Furniture -> Human
- I kept the promise. Your turn. -Shannon
Notes:
- Assuming Shannon didn't meet Beatrice, why were we shown a scene of Shannon breaking a mirror in the shrine? Distraction? Did this even happen? Maybe she burned it down just to disturb Maria.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Excellent monologue (Shannon):
Quote:
"My mind wandered.
"Back to the days when I could barely imagine the happiness I have today.
"I was a middle schooler at the time. A normal girl, who imagined about love, as is normal at that age.
"But I really should not have seen that dream.
"...Because I am furniture. Furniture is nothing more than a tool, and is not human.
"To a person less than human such as myself, just receiving my education was more than enough to make me happy. So even thinking about love was more than I deserved..."
Notes:
- Say, "middle schooler"? Wow! Woudn't that be....... like six years ago??
- George saves Shannon. Earl Grey incident.
- Jessica was the one to suggest that George and Shannon go out.
- I'm sure that there are lots of women who would think you are attractive. (Almost[?] said herself included, but narrator is 3rd person omniscient.) -Shannon
- Marriage meeting: George knew what Eva meant when she said, "You know, that topic?"
- Intended strategy of marriage meeting: allow time for friendship to develop, then initiate engagement and marriage at an appropriate time. Then move her to the family register.
- "If you marry based on emotions, wou'll definitely regret it." -Eva
- Isn't that rude to Hideyoshi? -Jessica
- I love him! We built up those feelings when we were husband and wife. A marriage is instant. -Eva
- Know your place. -Eva
- Shannon is distracted, Natsuhi scolds.
- Runon cuts corners.
- If only George was here. -Shannon
- It's a filthy job. My soul was corrupted long ago. -Kanon
Quote:
"Even though Kanon-kun had given me words of confort when I was down. Even so, I was dejected again because it wasn't 'him'. (George?)
"That in itself, was a sin.
"That went far beyond any dream the likes of me could be permitted to see, I don't know my place." -Shannon
- Why do I have a heart? -Shannon
- That man explained everything in the world with love. -Beatrice
Notes:
- Can I explain this mystery with love?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Girl Talk:
- Shannon and George slept in different rooms, no intimacy.
- Be honest with me. Am I strange? -Jessica
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ George and Shannon, engagement talk:
- When I build up my castle, I want to marry you. Let's get engaged. -George
- Uh, um, but... I'm furniture... - Shannon
Spoiler for Day 1 Shenanigans:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The Servants:
- In the truest sense, we will receive an important guest today. Make sure that you are prepared. -Genji
- Detach yourself from your private life. -Kanon
- I don't know what you mean by private life. -Shannon
Notes:
- Is Genji referring to Battler or "Beatrice"?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Jessica x Kumasawa:
- You're busy with retirement/work, but you've been around as long as Genji, right? You know more about Beatrice, don't you? -Jessica
- I wonder. -Kumasawa
- (Serious expression) The evil spirits of Akujikishima woke up from their sleep, and summoned Beatrice-sama. ...If she happened to come for the family conference... -Kumasawa
Notes:
- Now we see this forboding from two angles: Genji and Kumasawa. Intriguing.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Nanjo x Kinzo:
- You heard that a longed-for guest will be present at the family meeting this year? -Nanjo
- What? -Kinzo
- Battler, of course. -Nanjo
- (Disappointed) Possibly a *truly* longed-for guest will pay us a visit, depending on the roulette. -Kinzo
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Battler x Beatrice:
- Any questions?
- None. I don't have to believe you, though.
- I will continue to torture you until you resign.
- Rather, this will be torture for you!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The Lollipop incident:
- After seeing Maria so excited talking about the history of Halloween, Rosa waits until everyone leaves, then flips out.
- Kanon was watching the whole time. He emerges from the thicket and checks on Maria.
- "Kanon remembered that a similar candy which he had received from Maria was in his pocket."
Notes:
- Most likely, he handed the candy to "Beatrice".
- People who received lollipops from Maria: Battler, Kanon, many others?
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Afterwards:
- Rosa comes in all pissed.
- Shannon serves tea for the adults.
- Maria has such an affectionate mother. -Kyrie
- I'm not qualified to be a mother. -Rosa
- Shannon leaves, tension resumes.
- Where is Maria? -Rosa
- Rosa meets Maria, still holding the broken candy.
- Beatrice is coming soon! -Maria
- First, she appears to Beatrice and "fixes" her pumpkin lolly pop.
- Close your eyes! (Rosa is watching.)
Letter #1:
"Maria, I will give this to you in exchange for that sweet. [...] The time will come when you must open it, but until then, you definitely must not. Take good care of it. It will become an invitation clalling you to the Golden Land. [...] You must not show it to anyone."
Letter #2:
"And this is for you. [...] It could have been any of the four siblings. [...] Take it. Then read its contents aloud while seated at the dinner table, when all of the siblings are gathered."
- Then, Genji welcomes her in the lobby. Kyrie notices this guest.
- I have been waiting, Beatrice-sama. -Genji
- Her gait was like that of a family member who knew the inside of the mansion well. -Narrator
- Natsuhi finds Kyrie dazed, staring at the portrait. Explains about this fantastical story of Beatrice like it's something stupid.
- Kanon has no regrets.
- "Shannon still had remaining regrets. ...That would probably become a great source of pain and torture for Shannon."
- However, Shannon's regrets are still Kanon's regrets in the end.
Quote:
"Just the fact that Shannon, who during his days as furniture had given him his only reason to live, was being toyed with, .....that alone was something that he couldn't overlook...
"Therefore, ...something like kissing the shoes of the witch, ...was an easy oath for Kanon to make."
- Kyrie and the adults feel that they were given the chance to develop counter-strategies.
- Maria, ...around lunchtime today, we, ...met [Beatrice] outside, right? [...] Did you ever meet Beatrice before that? -Rosa
- Uu-. Met her every year. -Maria
- She doesn't remember exactly when it started. More than two years ago.
- Maria and Beatrice "sang songs, learned magic, learned how to write magic circles." She proceeds to show off her diary... complete with Beatrice's beautiful handwriting.
- All four magic circles are showed off, including the Kinzo door scorpion.
- "And even so, I never encountered a witch like that, .....never, ......supposedly..." "Mama? What's wrong?" "My head hurts." I was probably getting a little mixed up with my memories from when I was a young girl. [Oh yeah, she gave me an envelope.] -Rosa
Notes:
- What? I don't get it. When did Shannon give Kanon his only reason to live?
- It's very interesting to follow around Shannon and Kanon. Why? First of all, we know that Kinzo is dead and that the real Beatrice is also dead. Therefore, there is a high level of deception, and you can probably ignore them altogether. However, you can still extract big balls of emotion. You can almost say the same about Genji and Kumasawa. Genji expected Beatrice? Suuuuure. Kumasawa wondered if Beatrice would show up? Heh. Actually, it helps to narrow down the real culprits, doesn't it?
- Did Maria necessarily receive the envelope from Beatrice at this moment? This could be a deception. If so, perhaps she actually received it **after** the chapel incident. Isn't it strange that Maria would forget to obey Beatrice? There's also the part about Rosa remembering that Maria received the envelope. Looks inconsistent... **sigh**
- Also, was the second letter ever opened? When? Come to think of it, she definitely didn't read it at dinner. Could it be possible that it's the letter in the parlor at the end? If so, that would be strange. Why? Because it says the ninth twilight will start very soon.
Jessica: "[...] He hasn't changed a bit since long ago."
Shannon: "That's true. I get the feeling that Battler-sama was gracious enough to remain as he was six years ago."
George: "Shannon, to you remember about Battler-kun six years ago?"
Shannon: "Yes. Because he was, well, very energetic. **giggle**
George: "I also remember how the four of us used to play six years ago. Shannon acted a lot like a big sister."
Jessica: "That's right. I get the feeling that she was even more level-headed than she is now. Ahahahaha!"
Shannon: "B, ...back then I, umm, ...didn't act fitting for my place so... umm, I did some rude things..."
[Jessica asks how things are going between George and Shannon.]
Shannon: "Err, ...I, ...I wonder..."
George: "Yes. It's going very well."
Notes:
- Yikes. Shannon almost always says "I wonder" when asked about her relationship with George. George always says things are going great. It looks very one-sided.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Dinnertime!!!!:
- 19 dinner plates prepared.
- Why can't I deliver it directly? -Gohda
- Highest ranked: Genji. Delivers food to Kinzo.
- Nanjo was supposedly playing chess with Kinzo.
- Second highest ranked: Shannon. Delivers food to Beatrice. "Thank you for teaching me to be human."
- Dinnertime, Kyrie asks Gohda about this guest. He (unwittingly, or planned?) responds that she is being served in the special guest room. Natsuhi asks what he is talking about.
- I, um, was just ordered by Genji...
- Rosa exclaims she met the guest and that it was definitely a witch, she didn't hallucinate.
- Kyrie simply says that she met her and exchanged a few words.
- After a huge scuffle, Nanjo and the kids go to the guesthouse. Gohda follows with a tray of desserts.
Notes:
- It would be easy to say that Genji and Shannon both had a delicious meal to eat tonight!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Proposal at a Gazebo:
Quote:
"I heard about it before. ...There was a servant who didn't respect [Beatrice], was cursed, and actually had an accident."
"Yeah... but it's true that some people believed more or less than others. ...I, umm, ...believe that respect for that sort of thing shouldn't be forgotten, so I have never doubted that she exists. ...I dimly believed that a, ...umm, ...uncertain being called the Golden Witch surely existed."
"...And then that witch whose existence was uncertain actually showed herself and appeared openly from the entrance hall..., is that what happened?"
"...I don't know. ...I don't know, ...anything."
"...When you brought her dinner, did you talk about anything?"
"...No, nothing."
"I see. ...Still, a witch that eats food somehow doesn't sound so realistic. Maybe it's just someone who knows about the witch legend on this island taking on Beatrice's name after all. ...I think that you've probably come to respect Beatrice and think of her as something like a guardian god of the mansion. So when a person appeared actually calling themselves that, maybe you were a little disturbed."
"....That's right. I'm sure that might be the case."
[George then decides to cheer her up.]
"...What's wrong? ...You really haven't looked well for a while now."
"George-san. ...What does it mean, ...to be engaged?"
[Changes the subject to the proposal. I don't care about that. Hee hee. But basically, Shannon pressures George into making this a marriage ring instead of an engagement ring, all of a sudden.]
Notes:
- Oh, man! This is it! Shannon was clearly in a bind there!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Admit it:
You really are a witch after all, aren't you, Beatrice?
- Krauss
- Natsuhi
- Eva
- Hideyoshi
- Rudolf
- Kyrie
- Rosa
Notes:
- Is this scene even useful? It seems more like a demotivator device for readers like us. Oh yeah, Rosa doesn't die. Take this scene with a grain of salt.
- 7:00 AM, Genji wakes up Rosa. She's in her jammies!
Spoiler for First Twilight, etc.:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The next morning:
- Dining room, nothing but a note that says "Chapel", supposedly discovered by the servants.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ First twilight:
Krauss
Natsuhi
Eva
Hideyoshi
Rudolf
Kyrie
- There is exactly one key to the chapel.
- Magic circle on the outside chapel door.
- "Happy Halloween for Maria"
- Only one key to the chapel, and it was in the envelope in Maria's posession. This envelope was specifically given to Maria.
- All bodies found in the chapel
- Vertically sliced open from their chests to their stomachs.
- Rosa vomits at the sight until she dry heaves. So much, she almost expected candy to be in her vomit.
- Gohda is seriously feaking out! Police!!!
- Shannon, on the other hand, simply says, "Oh, this is horrible...."
- Three gold ingots are inside of the pumpkin on the table.
- Rosa: It's horrible, and yet it's very beautiful! (Oh my.)
- Of course, an envelope was on the table. It had the letter... the one with the special clause, etc. The first letter in Ep1. (Ep2 Letter I)
- And then the kids are introduced.
- Gohda and Kanon were sent to get Nanjo and to call the police.
- Nanjo: It would be better if everyone went outside. (Nobody listened.)
Red:
- Regardless of whether they were living or dead, the six people definitely entered through this front door.
- Only one key to the chapel exists; it is the only means to unlock the door. When locked, nobody can pass through.
- This morning, Rosa got the key to the chapel from Maria's handbag. It was in the envelope when Beatrice gave it to Maria.
- The letter handed to Maria and the one Rosa opened are the same thing.
- EP4: Starting when Maria's key was received, and until the instant Rosa unsealed it the next day, it passed through no one's hands!!
- EP4: Only Kinzo's study has an auto-lock. No others.
- EP4: The six people were already dead by the time they were discovered! All were killed by other people! All six were genuine victims, and did not take part in a mutual murder! There was no simultaneous murder!!
- EP4: Nobody was hiding in the chapel. A shut-in murder cannot work.
- EP4: When the six were killed in the chapel, the culprit was inside the chapel!
Blue (or equivalent):
- The culprit took the key from Maria's handbag, used it, and returned it by morning.
- [auto-lock theory]
- [Victims locked the door, culprit pretended to be dead.]
- [culprit was hiding]
- The food they were given had small bombs in it, which exploded from inside their stomachs. In other words, the crime is possible through trap X! The details of a bomb that they could swallow without noticing and that could blow open their stomachs is a Devil's Proof! I refuse to explain!!
Notes:
- "Beatrice" most likely has access to the gold. Then it could be true that Kinzo had bestowed the title of "Alchemy Counselor" to an individual, who relentlessly uses the name of "Beatrice".
- Perhaps Maria received the envelope much later than was presented to us.
- Jessica, Gohda, and Kanon enter. Jessica is really pissed...
- When Jessica unlocked the honored guest room, she borrowed the key from Kanon.
- Nobody's in the room. But the bed was used, supposedly.
- However, they did find a piece of paper, with a pen sitting nearby.
- Jessica crumpled it in a rage. (Ep2 Letter II) And she triggers an athsma attack.
- Gohda, would you leave this to me? -Kanon (Gohda returns to the chapel.)
- Jessica drags herself to her own room in the midst of her athsma attack. Kanon follows. Then he gives her the medicine.
- I won't let you alone. So I will sit in the hallway. (Kanon is so unromantic.) And thus the witch appears..........
There are three ways to hurt a woman:
1) A knife.
2) Hurt them in the heart.
3) To betray their hopes! No living being is more of a dreamer than a woman!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Second twilight:
Jessica (stake in back) Kanon (supposedly stake in heart, killed in the room, corpse is no longer present)
- Location: Jessica's room.
- Magic circle on the door.
- Search reveals that there is nobody hiding in the room.
- Key to Jessica's room on the side table.
- Jessica usually only locks her room when she goes to school just to keep Krauss out of it. -Shannon
- Backstabbings are supposedly performed best when the victim is at ease with the culprit. -Rosa
Proposed Alibis:
- Kumasawa and Gohda would never do anything of the sort. And Jessica probably wouldn't invite Kumasawa or Gohda into her room in her state of mind... probably an adolescent instead.
- Shannon and Genji were taking Master's orders. Rosa accepts it. "This is backed up by what I heard from Father. The two of you were in Father's room the whole time, copying and witnessing for him. Father and I can guarantee that." She revisits the thought again, George defends her, then she lets her off the hook.
- Kanon is Rosa's favorite scapegoat. But Battler remembers Gohda explaining that Kanon gave his master key to Jessica to open the guest room. Upon request, Nanjo finds it on her body.
Quote:
Battler: ".... I give up. I was able to prove that Kanon-kun couldn't have locked the door. ...But that doesn't mean I was able to figure out who killed Jessica."
Shannon: "N, ...no, ...that's more than enough... Umm, ...for Kanon-kun's sake, ...thank you very much...!"
Battler: "...No need to thank me. After all, ...that means that Shannon-chan is also under suspicion."
Shannon: ".................."
Red:
- One master key per servant: 5 total. No duplicates.
- Either a master key or Jessica's key is needed to lock the door.
- It's a typical closed room. You know the rules.
- Kanon was killed in this room.
- Only Battler, George, Maria, Rosa, Genji, Gohda, Shannon, Kumasawa, and Nanjo were in the room at the time. Oh yeah, Jessica too. Nobody is hiding.
Blue:
- If the culprit was one of the servants, they could have used a master key. It's not even a closed room!"
Letter:
- Included two master keys.
Notes:
- Nanjo "found" Kanon's master key on Jessica's body
- After the fantastic version of the scene, the clock pulls back about 15-20 minutes.
- Was Rosa sincerely duped about talking to Kinzo, or is this their conspiracy?
Spoiler for The suspense builds up...:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Will-writing scene:
Present:
- Kinzo (not really)

- Rosa
- Nanjo
- George
- Battler
- Maria
- (Kumasawa was not.)
- This chapel was important to Father. -Rosa

- Nanjo
- George
- Battler
- Maria
- Kumasawa (enters late)
- Rosa (leaves early)
- Rosa (returns, with a gun)
- Genji (with Rosa)
- Shannon (with Rosa)
- Kumasawa comes in cheerfully and supposedly hears about the murders for the first time.
- "Maybe Kumasawa's exaggerated surprise was a little comical. Even in this kind of situation, Rosa giggled."
- Rosa leaves to see Kinzo, leaves Kumasawa in charge.
- Kumasawa couldn't stand the silence, tries to raise their spirits. Stirs up the crowd at the mention of tea and pumpkin cookies, apologizes.
- Gohda mentions that the guest Beatrice wasn't in her room; it wasn't disturbed much, but Jessica made a mess in there.
- He also explains that Kanon is looking after Jessica.
- Did you say three gold ingots? -Kumasawa
"I do believe the story goes that Kinzo-san showed the president of Marusoo a mountain of gold, and let him take one bar back with him." -Nanjo
- Supposedly, this same gold bar came into Krauss's posession. And yet, there were three gold bars on the table.
- Rosa returns with Genji and Shannon, and then they all set off together to retrieve Kanon and Jessica.
- "The Master ordered me to copy down something." -Shannon

- Genji, Shannon, Kumasawa, and Gohda go to the kitchen.
- Rosa whispers to Nanjo in a small voice. Nanjo goes with the servants.
- Possibility raised that someone wanted the servants to look suspicious.
- Rosa also proposes that both Genji and Shannon are wolves.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Kitchen scene:
- Gohda at the food, Shannon and Kumasawa at the dishes, Genji and Nanjo playing chess
- Disturbance at the back door.
- Genji gets a knife used as an envelope opener. "But it was fundamentally a knife. So the blade on it could injure someone... Genji hid it in his sleeve with a well-practiced manner."
- Kanon supposedly shows up and bleeds all over the room.
- Servants and Nanjo supposedly carry injured Kanon to the servant's room.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Servant room scene:
- "Kanon" warns about Rosa.
- Shannon runs off to the boiler room.
- Nanjo and Kumasawa are mesmerized by Kanon playing with his wound.
- Shannon returns with a spider web on a handkerchief.
- and then the fantastic deaths, etc etc.
Spoiler for Seventh and Eighth Twilights etc. (Part 1):
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Inquisition in the Parlor:
Present:
- George
- Battler
- Maria
- Rosa
- Genji (enters)
- Shannon (enters)
- Gohda (enters)
- Then the three servants return to the parlor, explain what happened.
Quote:
Rosa: [Did you see the cluprit?]
Gohda: "Th, ...that is, umm, ....how should I explain...?! G, Genji-san."
Genji: ".....Even we cannot explain what we saw very well."
Gohda: "It certainly, umm, ...happened right before our eyes! [...] However, ...that, umm, ...what was it... Even I do not understand!"
[The sequence continues where Genji or Shannon give specifics a little at a time, and Gohda affirms that it really happened that way. But he never says anything original.]
Battler (narrating): "For some reason, I felt like their awkwardness couldn't be explained just by confusion... What had they seen? Like they said, had they really seen something unexplainable with words...?"
Red:
- They definitely would not mistake any different person for Kanon!
- The only one who can claim Kanon's name is the person is the person himself! A different person cannot claim his name!
Blue (Who was that Kanon?):
- If Kanon-kun's death was proclaimed with the red, there's no way he was alive. Therefore, there is a chance that the one who attacked that group was in a disguise to make the group mistake them for Kanon-kun!
- Kanon's name was inherited, blah blah. (Yeah right.)
Notes:
- Easy. Someone is lying. Doesn't Gohda look like he's under peer pressure, shall we say? That makes Shannon and Genji even more suspicious. If that's the case, I wonder why they kept Gohda alive.
Nanjo (throat cut by sharp blade, corpse disappears, supposedly the servant's room) Kumasawa (throat cut by sharp blade, corpse disappears, supposedly the servant's room)
- Room is drenched in blood.
- Shannon and Genji are the first to notice that the bodies are gone.
- It is established that Nanjo still had Kanon's key.
- Rosa shows everyone the letter in the sealed envelope that nobody else noticed.
- Both Nanjo's (Kanon's) and Kumasawa's master keys are also in the envelope.
- Rosa then decides that Nanjo and Kumasawa are the culprits after all, with all of the other servants as accomplices.
Quote:
"Shannon had finally broken down in tears...
"She had sacrificed 10 years to the Ushiromiya family. She had sacrificed 10 of the most brilliant years of her life.
"...And she had believed that she had built up a friendly relationship with Rosa.
"...And this is how she was treated!! You could kill a person without using a knife..."
- Afterwards, Genji gives up his master key.
- Shannon and Gohda follow suit.
- In other words, all five master keys were gathered in one place. And then Rosa placed them in Maria's handbag.
- Genji: "We will return to the kitchen."
Red:
- All of the servant's room keys are kept in the key box in the center of the servants' room.
- Closed room rules.
- Master key or servant's room key required.
- Only Battler, George, Maria, Rosa, Genji, Gohda, and Shannon are in the room at this time. Nobody is hiding.
- Genji and Gohda make warm comments. Before Shannon can say anything, George decides to tag along.
"....Yes. I will decide... who I'll spend the night with." -George
Notes:
- I agree; you CAN kill a person without a knife! If you had been following Knicknevin's notes about what makes Shannon give up on life episode-by-episode, you would notice he didn't suggest anything for Episode 2. Maybe this is it. She realized that since she really is the most suspicious, she has to make herself a victim. That is, if you're assuming that Shannon is Beatrice. (See the section: "Now then, for a broader view" under the "Shannon = Beatrice" spoiler tab.) But on the other hand, it could possibly mean that she was legitimately murdered as a homicide rather than an assisted suicide. For one thing, why are bloody handprints substituted for a magic circle in Shannon's death room later on?
- Isn't George being a bit selfish tagging along with Shannon like that? At this rate, it'll be the death of him! (literally...)
- With all the blood in the room, it might be safe to assume that at least one of the two are dead, more likely both.
- In any case, those two are not necessarily dead yet.
Spoiler for The (mis)Adventures of George and the Servants:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Adventures of George and the Servants (about 6-ish):
- Gohda seems to have more things to say about "Kanon" when he isn't around the "sheep". And Shannon is talking about her spider web... and the mirror in the shrine. Probably an illusion.
- Gohda also mentions the mirror in Natsuhi's room, and Genji mentions its spiritual power, or something. Who cares.
- So they decide to break the chapel window in order to rob Natsuhi's corpse of her room key.
- Shannon, get a flashlight! Gohda, get a glass-breaking object! Genji... umbrella us. -George
- Genji sticks around in the kitchen. The rest go to the chapel.
- Before I forget, doesn't Genji have one of two keys to Kinzo's room?
Where's the other? (Maybe that's not useful. I don't know.)
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The last line of defense (the parlor):
Present:
- Rosa (gun, all five master keys)
- Battler
- Maria
- Door to the parlor was locked... and barracaded from the inside with sofas and stuff.
- "The gold has been Beatrice's from the beginning. She wouldn't go after something that's hers."
- If you don't keep your promise, you are not taking a risk. If you don't bear a risk, nothing can be gained.
Red:
- "I keep my promises." -Beatrice
Quote:
"[I may deceive people,] but not once have I desregarded something that I have said as a promise. What about humans? Do you always keep your promises?" -Beatrice
[I doubt it.] -Battler
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The Chapel... again:
- The three break into the chapel.
- Gohda requests that Shannon retrieve Natsuhi's key.
Quote:
"Even though Gohda had prodigious skill, he had gotten into trouble, lost his job, and been left out in the streets, when Natsuhi had given him a new life. ...Even though it had just been a casual employment for Natsuhi, Gohda must have felt that it was a turning point in his fate. ..Those around Gohda could see that he felt a special kind of loyalty to Natsuhi. ..So he probably didn't want to lose that feeling, even though she was dead." -Narrator
- ... and then they get chased out. Okay.
- And someone unlocks the door from the inside without a key.
- They discarded their umbrellas in their flight.
Notes:
- I should take special note that the Chapel door is unlockable from the inside. I'm not sure if this is useful information, but we will see.... Or does it violate the red? I should check. If it does violate it, ....hmm.
- I guess it's safe to say that the mansion entrance has been unlocked the entire time, unlike in EP3.
- Twice, this incense burner is mentioned. (Probably not important...)
- George violently shuffles through the drawers.
- And... they die.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The aftermath:
- Genji finishes his late meal, he does his nighttime rounds.
- Meanwhile, those in the parlor had canned food to eat.
- Genji notices something outside (supposedly).
- Genji reports to Rosa that he found Nanjo and Kumasawa's bodies in the courtyard.
- Before they go, Rosa checks the locks on all the windows in the parlor. (Did she lock the parlor door too?)
- Genji offers Rosa an umbrella, but she refuses in order to maintain her two-handed grip on her gun.
" Even though the violent winds could be heard, the wind itself was blocked."
What do they see?
Spoiler for Seventh and Eighth Twilights (Part 2):
Nanjo (appears in courtyard, throat cut by sharp blade, stake in knee) Kumasawa (appears in courtyard, throat cut by sharp blade, stake in ankle)
- Genji says there were no stakes the last time he saw their bodies.
- Battler notices a twilight sequential problem.
- Battler wonders why Genji is alone.
" ...I was told that they wanted to go to Madam Natsuhi's room to search for something, so they left. They have not returned yet." [When?] "Two or three hours ago, I believe." [This isn't suspicious... why?] "...There must always be one servant awaiting orders. It was my duty to wait for orders until they returned." [Battler calls Genji a robot.]
Shannon (Stake to the forehead, face down in front of the dresser, lying in a sea of blood, demon's stake fallen nearby.)
Gohda (Stake to the chest, along the wall farthest into the room)
George (stake to the stomach, face down in front of the door)
- Natsuhi's room.
- George's body had Natsuhi's key.
- No magic circle per se, but...
"Hands had been heavily painted with the same red paint that the magic circles from before had been drawn with, ...and had banged on the door, scratched it, dirtied it. ...It was dirtied like the aftermath of a kindergartner playing in the mud. I didn't know what it could mean. ...The bright-red paint that had been slathered on was dripping down, and even though no one said it, it made us think of blood."
- Door was locked. Rosa hands Battler a master key to unlock it. Battler verifies that it's locked. Then he opens it.
"Maybe my heart was completely tired out and dead... Even though I know what I was doing was wrong, ...I lifted her head, and checked. ...And, I made sure that my guess was right on the mark. There was a gaping hole in Shannon-chan's head, and her insides were dripping out. Not only that, ...you could even see, ...inside her."
- They leave. Rosa takes the master key away from Battler and locks the study. She also now has Natsuhi's key.
Red:
- Closed room rules.
- Natsuhi's key was in George's pocket.
- Only five master keys were left, and Rosa was holding all of them.
- After [all] the master keys came into Rosa's control, never did any of them leave her hands! Except for the time when she lent it to Battler to unlock Natsuhi's room.
Blue:
- Rosa oba-san handed a key over to culprit X by some method, assisting in the closed room murder! And after that, she retrieved the key by a similar method!
Spoiler for Shenanigans at the Parlor, and other Post-Twilight Tomfoolery:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Shenanigans at the Parlor:
- No magic circle. Phew!
- Thanks, Genji. Please rest for the day. -- Certainly.
- Rosa unlocks the parlor door.
- Rosa double-checks all of the locks. Still good!
- Battler settles down on the couch.... and finds an unopened envelope.
- Envelope: Third magic circle (triangle), and the ninth-is-coming-soon message.
Quote:
"When I came into the room just now, I saw that there was nothing at all on the table. And I know that Maria did not approach that table. ...It was for a short time. But the only one who claims to have approached the table and found the letter, is you."
- Battler argues that this is actually Rosa's trap.
Quote:
"Including Rudolf nii-san, we've been reunited with you after six years. No one can prove that you really are Ushiromiya Battler, right?! Maybe you really aren't Battler, but someone who's snuck in, trying to skillfully steal the wealth of the Ushiromiya family!! Can you clearly prove that you are Ushiromiya Battler?! Right here, right now!!!"
Red:
- Only five master keys were left, and Rosa was holding all of them.
- The original key is sealed off in the servants' room according to the closed room definition.
Notes:
- Oops, it looks like I can't use the theory that someone broke the window in the servants' room to access the key box.
- Battler enters the dining hall. It wasn't even locked. Hmm.
- Bottoms up! You deserve it, after putting up with Rosa for 6+ hours.
- I shall guide you to the master's study.
- Accept what you see.
- And they meat Beatrice, Kinzo, yadda yadda yadda.
Note:
- Genji had the key to Kinzo's study the entire time.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Not the Chapel Again!
- Tries to provoke Beatrice.
- Grabs one of the three ingots... while still carrying the gun.
- Rosa admits it's the doing of a witch.
- Oops, no good clues here.
- Furniture -> Human
-Kanon
Notes:
Notes:
- Oh, man!
- Genji
- Shannon (instructed to write the will)
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Those still in the chapel:
- Gohda (reports Kanon is looking after Jessica)
- Rosa
- Nanjo
- George
- Battler
- Maria
- (Kumasawa was not.)
- This chapel was important to Father. -Rosa
- This door is opened / You will be blessed -- only when a miracle occurs.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Relocate to the Parlor:
Present:
- Gohda
- Nanjo
- George
- Battler
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Parlor after Kanon's alibi is cleared:
Present:
- George
- Battler
- Maria
- Rosa
- Genji (leaves)
- Shannon (leaves)
- Kumasawa (leaves)
- Gohda (leaves)
- Nanjo (leaves)
- Maria shows off her Wolves and Sheep Puzzle.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ The Chapel... again:
- The three break into the chapel.
- Gohda requests that Shannon retrieve Natsuhi's key.
- ... and then they get chased out.
- Battler argues that this is actually Rosa's trap.
Red:
- Only five master keys were left, and Rosa was holding all of them.
- The original key is sealed off in the servants' room according to the closed room definition.
Notes:
- Oops, it looks like I can't use the theory that someone broke the window in the servants' room to access the key box.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Battler Get His Drink On!
- The identities of all unidentified corpses are guaranteed!
Spoiler for Questions:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Questions:
Coming soon. I will give you a post when I update to version 5.1.
Sweet, loving these thoughts. So I'm supposing we could practically solve the truth using Shannon as the culprit? I guess you sort of solved "who dunnit", "how dunnit", but "why dunnit" is still a bit vague.
Anyways, thanks for the boost of encouragement to think more!
I think it was said that Maria bragged to the cousins about the letter after she got it, so at least that part seems to be true. Afterwards, Maria was with the other cousins pretty much constantly (although I guess she probably went to the bathroom at some point). Also, some of the red text referred to "the next day when Rosa opened the envelope", so at the very least Maria must have received it before midnight.
As for Rosa's innocence, during the first twilight battle, Beato refused to repeat that "The key to the chapel inside the envelope wasn’t used even once until Rosa oba-san opened the envelope." The start of the period in question isn't specified, so it's really saying "The key wasn't used even once from the beginning of the game until Rosa opened the envelope." Turning that around and taking into account that no one laid hands on the key while it was in the envelope, Beato's refusal means that the key was used sometime before 1pm on October 4th.
The chapel door is normally kept locked and isn't usually visited by the servants. The only obvious reason for going there prior to the key being handed over to Maria is to set up the Halloween party scene, and Rosa was never away from observation by other people long enough to arrange something so elaborate. On that basis, I think we can be nearly certain that the party was set up by someone other than Rosa.
Good stuff TeeHee. Your notes about the deaths of Shannon and co in Natsuhi's bedroom have my juices flowing again...
Spoiler for The basics:
So... we have three people, presumably all dead, in a locked room (Battler and the red both confirmed this) and the only key that could have been used to open the door was in Rosa's possession. There are some eerie hand prints all over the door painted in what looks like blood. Inside, Gohda is on his back not far from the door, George is slumped against the wall, and Shannon is sprawled over the dresser with the large mirror behind said dresser shattered all over the place.
First of all. All of the master keys, that could have locked or unlocked the door to that room, were in Rosa's possession at all times, and none of them ever left her control (aside from when she briefly lent one to Battler). And Rosa never left Battler's awareness in the parlor, so neither she nor the master keys could have a direct connection to this crime. The only other key to the room is locked inside, in George's pocket.
Secondly. None of Kinzo's children or their siblings could have committed this crime. All but Rosa are confirmed dead with the red, and again, Rosa was with Battler. Battler and Maria are out, and Kanon, who was also confirmed dead with the red. It would have been fairly obvious if Shannon killed the other two and shot herself (no gun). I've made my doubts about Jessica's death clear already. And lets not forget Genji, Nanjo and Kumasawa.
My issue with any theories regarding the servants still outside is that the victims would have to have locked themselves in after receiving fatal injuries. If that was the case, why was the room trashed and the mirror smashed? Why was George, who logically must have been the one to lock the door (unless this was a murder/suicide by Gohda), the furthest from it?
And, if the killer was outside the room, who staked them? All that would seem to leave is to suspect one of the victims. But... This doesn't add up. Gohda is far too cowardly to suddenly throw his life away. We've never seen even a hint of him having that kind of resolve. And in Episode 4, when George was tested, he stated he'd kill the entire family (literally 'I was prepared to make the entire family my enemy from the beginning') before he'd raise a hand against Shannon or himself.
... So. Someone outside the room doesn't really seem possible, and none of the victims in the room would (or, in Shannon's case could) have done it.
If the killer can't be outside the room, then logically, he or she must be in it. And if it's not one of the victims, then the only remaining option would appear to be someone hiding in the room. But if the killer is inside the room, did they draw the hand prints on the door ahead of time, or were they there since the previous night...
Either way, the only person I can really match up to a 'hidden killer' scenario is Jessica, which is a hard sell for a number of reasons. I just can't come up with a better idea... Well, I suppose, if George found out that Shannon intended to reject him, he might just...
Another thing that jumps out at me in this game is the use of mirrors. Shannon 'frees' Beatrice by breaking a mirror at the old shrine. They rush to Natsuhi's bedroom looking for a replacement mirror. And when Shannon and co died, the big mirror above the dresser was broken for some reason.
Is there some significance to killing Shannon in front of a mirror?
