a couple of days late

Quote:
ON June 23, 1982, in Detroit, a young man named Vincent Chin died. Four nights earlier, he had been enjoying his bachelor party with friends at a local bar when they were accosted by two white men, who blamed them for the success of Japan’s auto industry. “It’s because of you we’re out of work,” they were said to have shouted, adding a word that can’t be printed here. The men bludgeoned Mr. Chin, 27, with a baseball bat until his head cracked open.
The men — a Chrysler plant supervisor named Ronald Ebens and his stepson, Michael Nitz — never denied the acts, but they insisted that the matter was simply a bar brawl that had ended badly for one of the parties. In an agreement with prosecutors, they pleaded to manslaughter (down from second-degree murder) and were sentenced to three years of probation and fined $3,000.

3 years and a 3000$ fine.
They killed a man. Even if they didn't intended in the first place, they still bringed the baseballl bat ( unless you find thoses on a bar), a simple ''manslaughter'' charge is quite light given the circonstance and result.

Edit: The truth about the Fast and Furious scandal
http://features.blogs.fortune.cnn.co...furious-truth/
Quote:
...Quite simply, there's a fundamental misconception at the heart of the Fast and Furious scandal. Nobody disputes that suspected straw purchasers under surveillance by the ATF repeatedly bought guns that eventually fell into criminal hands. Issa and others charge that the ATF intentionally allowed guns to walk as an operational tactic. But five law-enforcement agents directly involved in Fast and Furious tell Fortune that the ATF had no such tactic. They insist they never purposefully allowed guns to be illegally trafficked. Just the opposite: They say they seized weapons whenever they could but were hamstrung by prosecutors and weak laws, which stymied them at every turn.
Indeed, a six-month Fortune investigation reveals that the public case alleging that Voth and his colleagues walked guns is replete with distortions, errors, partial truths, and even some outright lies. Fortune reviewed more than 2,000 pages of confidential ATF documents and interviewed 39 people, including seven law-enforcement agents with direct knowledge of the case. Several, including Voth, are speaking out for the first time ...
And who voted thoses weak laws...

You can bet that in an inverse case the minority guy would have been given a much harsher sentence. I can already picture they will get out in a year and a half due to good conduct and working inside the prision they will recover the $3000 bucks and get some skills to get a job. So the morale of the story would be, if you are white and unemplyed in Amurrica, kill some minority and you will get free training.

You do know that this crime happened in 1982, and the main instigator ended up thrown in jail again?

That's one of the problems with common law systems.

nothing wrong with the system but the judge

The system is the one that empowers judges independent of capability, but subject to popular approval with lawmaking powers.

Uncle Sam Wants You! … to Combat Online Piracy:

"The Obama administration is apparently out of ideas on how to protect Big Content
from online piracy. So now it’s asking for your help.

Victoria Espinel, the nation’s copyright czar, reached out to Wired late Monday to
explain that Uncle Sam is seeking the public’s input for ideas on how to combat
intellectual property theft."

Patents are more or less fine (if they are only like 17 years). Copyright for 75 is likely excessive.

Both would be fine if they were not resalable, inheritable, etc. In other words, if someone would profit financially, it should be the creator/invetor/etc. not an array of leeches who inflate prices and hide behind protectionist laws that harm the masses.
