I'm going to say first reaction is...very strange.

Characters felt very over the top at times. The main character sure loves to talk to himself when in a fight.

Still looks are pretty good and some entertaining people in it. Felt a bit weird, but will see how the next episodes build on this.

Yeah, there is that "strange" feeling about it. That said, I've surprisingly gotten a better first impression of Bellri than with other teenaged UC main characters. I'll see how that impression holds as the series progress, but so far so good.

This doesn't feel as fluid as some of the more modern animes, and the acting and the way they handle space pirates fell very... for lack of better word, weird...

Watching that felt very... Nostalgic. From animation(not counting the CGI), to the sound, and even the eyecatch.

It's not perfect, but I felt like it was a super fun first episode. I was leery about the characters designs, but I loved to see them in motion. Fun cast, good music, promising story-elements set up. Let's see how Tomino executes them now!

A special mention to the ending credits. I absolutely loved the animation and the song, plus the eyecatch made me all nostalgic.

GRAVITY HAIR.

Eh, it was decent overall although the first episode didn't impress me much as the second one. I think the pacing is fairly fast so far but given the show with a 2 cour, it should have enough time to explain itself.

One thing that was briefly mentioned was some sort of Iris power that both Bellri and Aida seems to have. Otherwise, I'm keen to know more about the technological aspects of the show, in particular the orbital elevator. Also curious to see about the background origins of various factions/nations in both series of this universe.

This so much =03! The style is very reminiscent of King Gainer and Turn A, esp the latter with the way random stuff just happens for no explicit plot reason(girls running in cheering, "jumping" between scenes, fast-paced events, etc.). edit: Also, someone got brightslapped in the first episode. You can always expect Tomino to deliver on the good stuff =03(well, at least about 80% of the time).

I also like that we're getting a rather 'fun' MC, but skilled enough to use a low-grade mech to attack. I get tired of the usual whiny or brooding types all the time, even though we all know Bell's gonna have to go through some form of drama before its all over.

My quick review:

- I like the opening
- The characters are well, hard to say much as this is the first episode, but so far the MC is a bit....odd
- Animation is very oldschool-ish despite being "new" (the movements seem oldschool while the art is obviously from this age)
- Lots of new terminology and lore to learn, we'll catch on eventually
- The ending, the song is classic oldschool, but in its entirety I cant take it seriously, like at all (no shit)

Overall while its nice, for some reason the episode itself does not quite draw me into watching more, the real draw for me are the upcoming mech designs and the artstyle (and good old awesome gundam osts). Heck, even AGE's first episode made me want to watch more from what the episode itself featured

7.5/10

WTF did I just watch?

Animation looked great, love the retro-ness of it all. The plot was definitely 'different' than what you'd expect out of a Gundam series. The amount of information that was fed to us was overwhelming, especially since there seems to be a lot of missing context which makes everything even more confusing. There seems to be a lot of social dynamics that are quite different from our society.

Anyways, definitely a confusing but interesting first episode.

Tomino style is going to be really hard for a lot of people. Everything is so densely packed usually and his dialogue can be a little out there (UNIVERSSSSSSSSSSSSE!) so it takes a really good translator and a lot of patience from the viewer to work through it. I admit I didn't fully understand most of the plot points of the original U.C TV Series (MSG, Zeta, ZZ, Victory etc) the first time I watched them but picked up on a lot more years later when I was older and wiser and had access to better subtitles.

I sort of find it funny that some people think the animation quality in this is bad yet not really at the same time because I can only assume a lot of modern anime viewers have never seen anything quite like Tomino's style of direction. It's also not made to look bleeding edge and realistic in style like a lot of popular modern anime which personally I'm okay with. I find the animation movement actually very deliberate and expressive. There's a certain sense of wonder and adventure to the way this show is starting out that I quite dig and definitely plan to see more for sure though I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to enjoy this cast or not as some things didn't quite go as I expected them and it feels like there's a lot of ground to cover there yet before we have a full picture of what this is all about and what these people are all about.

In any case if ever was a show where I think the label YMMV it's going to be this one.

So it seems like the Kuntarra are treated like they're sub-human or something? At least that's what it seems like given the dialogue.

Also, I could not make heads or tails of what Aida meant by "the world isn't square".

Well, if it wasn't for that CGI seen here and there, I could have sworn this series came out in the 80s!

I really didn't see much of the promotional material for this, but I didn't know this series was going to be THIS retro. I feel like I'm watching something between the original Gundam and Zeta in terms of anime era, complete with the animation, settings, sound effects, special effects, OP, and unfortunately, the MC.

The first thing I noticed about this series is that it's very busy. Something is always happening and there is practically no moment when less than three people are on screen together.the world is very colorful and again, very busy. And sometimes, not in a good way. I've been reading subtitles for over 13 years and it's second nature to me now. So I was pretty surprised when I was actually struggling a bit to both read the subtitles and watch what was going on, but there was so much happening on screen and so many words being said that my eyes were actually straining to keep up.

As for the events going on, I'm still putting it together, but it just seems your average two sides being against each other for some reason, with the space pirate princess on one side and the MC, Bellri on the other. I liked Bellri okay, except for his rather old-fashioned MC style of being a pacifist and being quirky and a genius and asking ridiculous questions. It was also a surprise that his MOM was the scientist genius and not his dad which is the usual. However with his connection to the G-self and to the princess with the whole iris thing, I'm wondering if we don't have a Kira/Cagalli situation here.

As for all the other characters, I really don't care about most of them other than the princess (best girl so far), Luin, the weird Monday girl, and all the guys in the military and research areas. I absolutely cannot stand the pink-haired chick with the slingshot. Only two episodes and I already want to kill her. Good job, guys...

Well, while this series definitely has some adjusting it needs to do and a little settling down that needs to happen to let the audience get used to this new world, I'm interested in what happens next. So, call me intrigued for now.

Weird but enjoyable episodes. So far Bellri seems like a pretty solid protagonist but I just hope we won't have to deal with too much angst from him about killing. I was also surprised that his mom was the brilliant scientist rather than his dad since that seems to be more common. The other characters seem pretty cool but I am not really attached to any of them yet.

This series appears to have a good strong start. Love the art direction and the world they built. Animation is nice and fluid when it needs to be. The series a certain upbeat warmth to it, it's very easy to get into. Mecha battle in then second episode was excellent, those Grimoires are beasts. I'm fons of all the characters right now as well, dialogue at times is kinda silly, but that's nothing bad. Can't wait for episode 3!

I don't think he's a pacifist I just think he doesn't particularly see any reason to kill anyone if he doesn't have to. Also that sucks because I surprisingly liked Noredo when I thought I wouldn't. There's obviously some racism going on to these Kuntara people in the Amerian culture but she just sort of rolls through it and is trying to keep Bellri out of trouble as much as she can. She kind of reminds me of Sochie Heim from Turn A Gundam somehow, just kind of outspoken, headstrong and determined.

I also don't think that it's two factions facing each other but there's definitely at least a few at play. The pirates just seem to have some sort of goal which Aida kind of hints at having something to do with setting up solar panels. Bellri says some reason why they think they can't do that but it's cut off by the sounding of the fighting outside the castle and then she slaps him. There's definitely something going on there. Also they talked about how there's a Capital Guard but now there's a Capital Army division that the kids seem confused about which seems to hint at military expansion since a guard does just that while an army invades. The religious leader also seems interested in the G-Self since he personally came to see it at the end of the 3rd episode and it looks like they'll be taking over the the jurisdiction. I think the Capital Army is going to try to take control of it too. There was also some visiting dignitary at the party they were having in the Capital so there's that to consider too. Supposedly the 3rd episode has a lot of exposition about the politics of the Reguild Century which should help flesh a lot of things out.

Oh one other thing I found curious is the way they talk about the G-Self and how the girl reacts to it is like it's a living entity. It also moved on it's own to kill that Captain Cahill guy Aida seemed close with which seems to have led to some confusion as well since Aida thinks it was Bellri that killed him. Aida also seemed to think it wasn't operating and responding to her right either when she fought Bellri and there was also something the Captain mentioned about an Iris Sign which Bellri had as did Aida and his was flashing a lot brighter than hers. Just some food for thought. There's clearly a lot going on here but we're also not meant to understand it all yet as I figured going in so I'm kind of just ready for the ride.
