I don't remember anything shocking whatsoever back then. Of course, people jokingly believed there was something between them just because they together had many roles for the same series etc, but even then, I think there were rumors.

In comparison, people expected Taketatsu to be married at some point as she stated several times she will not engage into a relationship before being 30 years old. Because of this, some people figured out she will announce it on 23rd June this year because 1) it is her birthday, so the "embargo" is over 2) unlike previous years, she didn't prepare any special event for her birthday.

So the real surprise for her fans was whom she was going to be married to, and basically no one saw coming that Kaji would be her husband. On the flip side, no one really knew if Kaji had any relationship going on.

You know, a few months ago one female mangaka and one female illustrator posted wedding photos and announcment on twitter.

I almost belived Japan allowed gay marriages

So I prefer to double-check such things now.

Considering the context and their respective fanbase and their talent agency, that would be beyonw unlikely. In fact, they blatantly mentioned the family registry. So it can't be any more serious than that.

And yeah, Japan's leglislation still doesn't recognize same sex marriage in Japan but people are allowed to marry someone of the same sex overseas. So yeah, I'm not sure how you could take that at face value.
And really, I don't know whom you are referring to, but that's definitely the first time I've ever heard of professionals in the industry making a false announcement like that and bailing out. That's definitely a unique exception, hardly something that could happen multiple times with other people.

I'm trying to think of how many shows the two have been in together. I don't think they were as frequently paired up as Maaya Sakamoto and Kenichi Suzumura were, off the top of my head I can only think of Guilty Crown and, obviously, High School DxD. Ironically the member of that core Harem who took the longest to come around to and fall in love with Issei married him in real life .

Now I hope they do a new season of DxD just on the principle of having the two of them do the show now as husband and wife, which would be kind of hilarious (then again, I think the core four girls are all married save for Asia's seiyuu) .

But in all seriousness, congratulations to Kaji-san and Taketatsu-san. They're two of my favorite seiyuu and I wish them nothing but happiness together .

The "announcement" tweet outright stated it was fake: there is a "#嘘だよ" hashtag ("that's a lie~") in that announcement. So yeah, ANN jumped on the gun like idiots and because of this, you and probably other people trusted their initial coverage in good faith.
But as far as it goes, announcements of such events are always to be considered truthful unless they blatantly state otherwise just like that little story you have posted.
