The closest you get to any actual romance between Shinji and Asuka in the entirety of the animated franchise is an acknowledgement that Asuka likes Shinji to some tsundereish degree in the director's cut of the mind-rape episode. That is it and that is not romance.

If you're new to the franchise and don't mind very old graphic, I suggest you watch the very first Macross series which titled Super Dimensional Fortress Macross (or SDF Macross for short). If you can't handle the ancient graphic, then watch its movie version titled Macross: Do You Remember Love. After watching those, you can go ahead with other series like Macross Plus, Macross Frontier and Macross Zero.

Okay I'm shocked to see no one ever say a mention in Heroic Age, I thought it was real great as an Action Mecha, & the two main characters have something there sparking. Definitely give that one a try!

I don't know if you would like Gurren Lagann, the romance is sorta not there, like you missed something important, like why does he like her and not her? it annoyed me when i watched it so i just quit watching it after the 17th episode. but the mecha action is great if thats what you are looking for

I've read spoilers on accident and learned this Sorry obelisk I always try to learn about a series before i start watching.I'm already on episode 14 of gundam 00. Spoiler for Arya: I know how you feel, I loved Lacus. But I'm not disappointed with gundam 00, it has several voice actors that were in previous gundam series. Even the voice actress of Lacus is in it. As a main character I like Setsuna and the others except for the guy who wears the pink shirt. He annoys me like athrun did. I don't think it is a mother/son affection.
