These examples are not really comparable with the current middle East situation, for as aforementioned by Chainlegacy, the population tectonic of these past 50 years is close to the one that occurred during the British colonization of North America and later expansion of the USA: whole populations were pushed away or exterminated to make room for pioneers. The same processes took place in the XIXth century in Australia, Tasmania, Argentina and Chile.

On the contrary, even if the political entities you mention no longer exist, the same cannot be said about their peoples, for they are still inhabiting their lands centuries if not millennias after the fall of their kingdoms.

The blood of Phoenicians is still alive in pretty much all the areas they settled around the Mediterranean, even if political identities and direct cultural link disappeared, it doesn't mean all their peoples were eradicated.

Concerning Babylon, well, the Assyrian peoples still represent a sizable portion of the Fertile Crescent's population, preserving distinct culture. And if you look trough culture, many "Arabs" in this area would actually be acculturated and converted to Islam Assyrians.

Last, why are you speaking of the Magyar? For they are still living in the area they settled during the early Middle Ages. They are several millions, speak their proper language, have a distinct culture, and even have their own country. Hint: in their language Hungary is called Magyarország, and aptly, Hungarian speakers design themselves and their language as Magyar...

Ahmadinejad tells U.N. most blame U.S. government for 9/11

Quote:
(Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the United Nations Thursday most people believe the U.S. government was behind the attacks of September 11, 2001, prompting the U.S. delegation to leave the hall in protest.

Addressing the General Assembly, he said it was mostly U.S. government officials and statesmen who believed al Qaeda Islamist militants carried out the suicide hijacking attacks that brought down New York's World Trade Center and hit the Pentagon.

Another theory, he said, was "that some segments within the U.S. government orchestrated the attack to reverse the declining American economy, and its grips on the Middle East, in order to save the Zionist regime." Ahmadinejad usually refers to Israel as the "Zionist regime."

"The majority of the American people as well as most nations and politicians around the world agree with this view," Ahmadinejad told the 192-nation assembly, calling on the United Nations to establish "an independent fact-finding group" to look into the events of September 11.

As in past years, the U.S. delegation walked out during Ahmadinejad's speech. It was joined by all 27 European Union delegations and several others, one Western diplomat said.

Mark Kornblau, spokesman for the U.S. mission to the United Nations, reacted before Ahmadinejad finished speaking.

"Rather than representing the aspirations and goodwill of the Iranian people, Mr. Ahmadinejad has yet again chosen to spout vile conspiracy theories and anti-Semitic slurs that are as abhorrent and delusional as they are predictable," he said.

"COVERED UP"

Ahmadinejad raised a third theory about the attacks, saying: "It was carried out by a terrorist group, but that the American government supported and took advantage of the situation. Apparently this viewpoint has fewer proponents."

He said the main evidence for that theory was "a few passports found in the huge volume of rubble and a video of an individual whose place of domicile was unknown but it was announced that he had been involved in oil deals with some American officials."

"It was also covered up and said that due to the explosion and fire no trace of suicide attackers was found," he added.

Similar to past years, the Iranian president used the General Assembly podium to attack Iran's other arch foe, Israel, and to defend the right of his country to a nuclear program that Western powers fear is aimed at developing arms.

"This regime (Israel), which enjoys the absolute support of some western countries, regularly threatens the countries in the region and continues publicly announced assassination of Palestinian figures and others, while Palestinian defenders ... are labeled as terrorists and anti-Semites," he said.

"All values, even the freedom of expression, in Europe and the United States are being sacrificed at the altar of Zionism," Ahmadinejad said.

The Iranian president has previously raised doubts about the Holocaust of the Jews in World War Two and said Israel had no right to exist.

Tehran has been hit with four rounds of U.N. sanctions for refusing to halt its nuclear enrichment program. U.S. President Barack Obama earlier told the assembly that the door to diplomacy was still open for Iran, but it needed to prove its atomic program is peaceful, as it says it is.

Wednesday, foreign ministers from the five permanent U.N. Security Council members and Germany said they hoped for a negotiated solution to the standoff with Tehran.

Ahmadinejad criticized the Security Council for imposing sanctions on his country, saying the penalties were "destroying the remaining credibility" of the 15-nation body.
The last part made me laugh. It is not like Iran represented the world, neither do they have any credibility with regards to the running of their country.

Ahmadinejad says in U.N. address that capitalism is dying

Quote:
(Reuters) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday told a U.N. General Assembly session on poverty that capitalism was on the verge of death and that it was time for a new economic system.

"The discriminatory order of capitalism and the hegemonic approaches are facing defeat and are getting close to their end," Ahmadinejad said at a summit meeting assessing progress on achieving U.N. goals to drastically reduce poverty by 2015.

"The undemocratic and unjust governance structures of the decision-making bodies in international economic and political fields are the reasons behind most of the plights today humanity is confronting," he said, according to an English translation of his prepared remarks.

Ahmadinejad had drawn large crowds for previous U.N. speeches but Tuesday's address was delivered to a virtually empty hall.

It was unclear whether the unusually low attendance was due to waning interest in Ahmadinejad five years after he first addressed the assembly or if it was the fact that he was one of the first speakers in the morning session, which began at 9 a.m. EDT/1300 GMT.

Ahmadinejad offered no clear alternative to capitalism but said, "The world is in need of an encompassing and, of course, just and humane order in the light of which the rights of all are preserved and peace and security are safeguarded."

Ahmadinejad will address the 192-nation General Assembly again on Thursday during its annual General Debate, in which world leaders traditionally cover issues important to them.

In the past, Ahmadinejad has used the General Debate as a forum to defend Iran's nuclear program and assail its arch foes Israel and the United States, typically prompting walkouts by the United States and some European countries.

China puts a REE (Rare Earth Elements) export embargo on Japan?

Quote:
TOKYO (Reuters) - China's trade ministry has told exporters of rare earth metals to halt shipments to Japan, Japan's trade minister said on Friday, citing information from importers.

But Beijing has told Tokyo there was no official embargo, Akihiro Ohata, head of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), told reporters on Friday.

The comment comes after a New York Times report that China has banned exports of rare earth metals to Japan, amid escalating tensions between Asia's two largest economies.

[...]

Rare earth elements have a variety of technological and industrial applications, including in batteries, computers and weapon systems.

[...]

China accounts for about 97 percent of the world's total production of rare earth elements, about half of which is exported to Japan.
For those not familiar with the issue, China is pretty much the sole producer of REE (which are actually not that rare, but messy to extract and refine), and those are vital in modern e-technologies.

EDIT :

U.S. judge orders lesbian Air Force nurse reinstated

Quote:
(Reuters) - A former U.S. Air Force flight nurse expelled from the military after revealing she is a lesbian was ordered reinstated by a federal judge on Friday in a closely watched court challenge to the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

The American Civil Liberties Union, representing Major Margaret Witt in contesting her dismissal, has said that if returned to the service, she would be the first person to lawfully serve openly in the U.S. military as a homosexual.

"She should be reinstated at the earliest possible moment," U.S. District Judge Ronald Leighton said as he spoke from the bench of his packed courtroom in Tacoma, Washington.

Witt's supporters erupted in applause, and some wiped tears of joy from their eyes.

Witt, 46, reacted to the news almost stoically at first, then broke into a wide smile.

The verdict capped a two-week nonjury "bench" trial in which ACLU lawyers presented a string of witnesses who worked with Witt attesting to her outstanding performance in the service.

Air Force attorneys countered that military regulations, including the policy requiring gay service members to keep their homosexuality private, must be uniformly obeyed in order to maintain morale and order throughout the armed forces.

Leighton's decision comes weeks after another federal judge in California struck down the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" law as an unconstitutional infringement on the free speech and due process rights of gays and lesbians serving in the military.

The Obama administration on Thursday, however, asked that judge to keep the policy mostly intact, rather than issue an injunction against it, while Congress debates the issue.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Senate blocked legislation that would have repealed the policy, instituted in 1993, which continued the long-time ban on homosexual acts in the military but allowed gays to serve in the armed forces so long as they kept their sexual orientation a secret. Otherwise, they are to be expelled.

The administration's position on a court injunction in the California case drew cries from some in the gay rights community that President Barack Obama was forsaking a campaign promise he made to support repeal of the law.
Good to see that fairness came up at the top of the mess. Why don't people just put their views on homosexuality aside and treat others as they would treat their own people? We are all still human beans after all.

Conservatives will argue this is the responsibility of Congress, not "activist" judges making policy from the bench. If, on the other hand, the free-speech issue makes it way to the Supreme Court, it will pose an interesting constitutional question since the military already has been granted some abilities to limit speech for national security purposes.

The Witt decision holds open the possibility that any dismissal from the services because of being openly homosexual can be adjudicated in a civilian court. (You'll notice the Witt decision applies only to her and doesn't set any precedents for other homosexual military personnel.) This has caused great concern among those who feel it will impede the military's ability to discipline its troops.

Martin Kaste's report on NPR last week is a good summary of these broader issues.

BTW, the Senate didn't vote on overturning "don't ask, don't tell" because the Democrats didn't have the votes to block a filibuster. In fact, they didn't pass the military budget at all.

Considering how long it took the americans to put blacks into service... how long it took them to put women in the frontline... It is one area where you are really behind much of the world.

Discrimination is still strong in the USA.

There are over 200 countries in the world; only some 25 of them allow openly homosexual people to serve in their militaries.

http://www.palmcenter.org/research/n...20gay%20people

I don't support the current policy, but I wouldn't say it puts the US "really behind much of the world." We are at odds with most other advanced industrial democracies in this regard, however.

Discrimination is still strong in the USA.
As everyone else said, there are many countries who discriminate other races from their militaries, or from certain jobs. Or anything else, its only a matter of time till they have to realize that they need all the help they can get in the near future. Or something like the Civil Rights movement will happen in certain countries.

Discrimination isn't as strong as it used to be before Martin Luther King's speech. So its not that big of an issue.

In a path breaking study SIPRI has explored the role of PLA in shaping Chinese foreign policy. As per the research, the PLA has historically been and continues to be a major player in Chinese foreign policy making as are the armed forces of most nations. However, its role had been substantially narrowed by decades of institutional reform, focused on the professionalization of the armed forces and the distancing of military leaders from civilian decision making processes. The post draws heavily from the SIPRI Research Paper Number 26 and in some instances has echoed the spirit of the research.

The PLA still holds sway in these and other defence related foreign policy issues, particularly with respect to policies related to strategic arms, territorial disputes and national security towards countries such as India, Japan, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia and the USA. In particular, the PLA is a staunch advocate of a hard line towards Taiwan and perceived US interference in cross-Strait relations.

While the CMC, like the PLA as a whole, has historically been dominated by the ground forces, in 2002 the air force, navy and Second Artillery Corps (China’s strategic missile forces) were each given CMC representation. This reflected their elevated status and their role in foreign policy formulation as the PLA branches responsible for new or enhanced military capabilities and strategic programmes, including anti-satellite and ballistic missile defence tests and overseas naval deployments.
The Law Firm known as ACS have been targeted by miscreants in a sure way motivated by the Firms' own arrogance. They now stand witness to their public humiliation
Quote:
Last night, the private emails of anti-piracy law firm ACS:Law were spilled onto the Internet. Today, as we continue to dig through the mountain of information, we take a look at some of the human victims of this scheme. From poor people pleading for clemency, to bewildered old age pensioners accused of sharing adult movies, to married men who have been confronted with allegations of sharing gay porn, the cost is significant.

Since they appeared on the scene a year or two ago, lawyers ACS:Law have made a lot of enemies. This week the rage of the masses boiled over and the hordes of 4chan, Anonymous and those simply wishing to dig the knife in, helped to DDoS the company’s site from the Internet.

Then, in a huge screw up, ACS:Law managed to expose backups of its entire website and email database to the outside world. Last night they were all over the Internet for everyone with a huge amount of patience to decode and read.

As we read yesterday, company owner Andrew Crossley was happy to brag of how much money he’d been making so today, in the second of what is likely to be a long string of articles, we take a look briefly at the human cost of what ACS:Law have been doing.

“Anarchy is the sure consequence of tyranny; or no power that is not limited by laws can ever be protected by them”
