Dororo (Remake)

Osamu Tezuka's "Dororo" is getting a remake anime.

Plot:
Quote:
A samurai lord has bartered away his newborn son's organs to forty-eight demons in exchange for dominance on the battlefield. Yet, the abandoned infant survives thanks to a medicine man who equips him with primitive prosthetics—lethal ones with which the wronged son will use to hunt down the multitude of demons to reclaim his body one piece at a time, before confronting his father. On his journeys the young hero encounters an orphan who claims to be the greatest thief in Japan.
Teaser:

Studio will be MAPPA

winter season 2019 looks much better than fall season 2018.

Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Mobile Suit Gundam UC, Rurouni Kenshin, Getbackers) is directing the series, and Yasuko Kobayashi (Attack on Titan, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Garo the Animation) is overseeing the series scripts. MAPPA (Yuri!!! on Ice, In This Corner of the World) and Tezuka Productions are animating the project from Twin Engine. Satoshi Iwataki (Ghost Hun) is adapting manga creator Hiroyuki Asada's (Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee, Cheer Boys!!, The Girl in Twilight) original character designs for animation. Yoshihiro Ike (Tiger & Bunny, The Great Passage, The Empire of Corpses) is composing the music.

The first episode lives up to my expectations. It's really good. I am definitely in.

So we've Daigo and Dororo as protagonist? Daigo for his revenge and Dororo as the plucky comic relief....well.

Amazing chapter, specially animation and style

Why all anime studios now use the Motorcycle opening? geno, Vlon and now Mappa

I think it's because you saw the episode that came out of the amazon instead of the Japanese TV.

Well, there are several cases where Crunchyroll has shown an episode with some censorship or alteration even though in some japanese station the episode was shown intact, two examples would be Junji Ito (WOWOW channel) and more recently SAO (AT-X).

But I've never heard any of this about Amazon, I believe they do not have this problem because it's a service known to be more "adult."

I do not think there's anything to worry about.

That was a nice first episode.

They've reduced the number of demons to 12 (48 in the original), not sure how it will affect the story. It's amazing Hyakkimaru managed to not only survive but also become a master fighter while being deaf, blind, mute, and limbless. He really owes the man who made his amazing prosthetics a lot. I wonder how he's going to communicate with Dororo until he recovers his voice. Looks like killing each demon will make him recover what they stole from him. His skin was first. He won't look as creepy as he did with that mask.

Interesting that the series is named after Dororo when Hyakkimaru is the one that has all the makings of a main character.

Fantastic premiere. Great atmosphere, beautiful backgrounds and fluid animation, Furuhashi obviously totally in his element. I agree the OP song is subpar, but the animation sequence itself (by Koike Takeshi no less) is fantastic.

A very interesting first episode. The series definitely has a "good series" vibe.

I'm not familiar with this series (and didn't even realize it is a remake), so I was completely surprised when I checked out the manga...the difference between character design was shocking!

According to Wikipedia, Tezuka Osamu chose the Dororo title after his childhood memories of his friends mispronouncing dorobo (どろぼう, "thief") as dororo.

I guess he felt Dororo was a fast, catchy name for his work at the time.
(Which beats those long-winded LN/WN titles that cram the entire premise into the title - 'My Dad Sacrificed my Body Parts to Demons for Power so I'm Questing to Recover Them - And There's a Sidekick called Dororo too!)

I wouldn't say the statue saved him, more a divine force saved him via the statue.

The OP singers are a glam rock band from Kobe, Queen Bee/Ziyoou-Vachi.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queen_Bee_(band)

Apparently the lead singer Avu-chan, can sing in both high and low pitches, and is of African-American/Japanese descent. Word is Avu-chan is transgender.

They also did the ED for Tokyo Ghoul Re.

Anyone else thought the three guys beating up Dororo were pretty forgiving, all things considered?

Came into the show no expectations and left pleasently surprised. I feel really bad for Hyakkimaru and his mother. To be sacificed like that by his trash heap of a father for his own personal ambition and power.

Cool OP sequence, but the song itself is pretty bland. Pretty awesome ep, I've only watched the live action movies, but always heard good things about the manga. Mappa really knocked out the park with this one, art and animations are top notch, with the fight at the end being the standout. Hyakkimaru's pretty badass, that's for sure. I have a fondness toward Sengoku Jidai setting, so that's another plus for me. The best premiere of this season for me, so far.

Yes, they were certainly not as cruel as others in their position might have been.

That CG motorcycle animation is Twin Engine's vignette. They co-produce shows with a bunch of different studios.
