Question How often do Japanese DVDs have English subs??

Once again let my preface this by saying I am fantastically ignorant in general about Anime so I apologize for asking moronic noob queations .

Anyway, I just went to my local alternative video store last night and I was surprised to see Ghibli Studios' "The Cat Returns" R2 Japanese DVD with English subtitles available for rent. I got it and watched in on my projector via my PC and it was pretty good (aimed at a rather young audience mind you).

So I was just wondering how often Japanese Anime dvds have English subtitles on them? Is it very common? Do most of them have them? There are several large-ish Japanese video rental places nearby so I'm gonna check those out regardless but I was just wondering what the situation is and why people would wait for the R1 if they can get the R2 with English subs.

Thanks!

From my experience, most Japanese dvds generally do not have english subs. Usually, it's only the bootlegs that have them.

IIRC all the Ghibli dvds have english subs. There a thread at animeondvd.com that discusses dvds that have english subs.

It's fairly uncommon, although there have been a few over time that did have english subs. Besides all Ghibli entries, I can also think of FLCL (volumes 2 - 6) having them, as well as Memories (which I may pick up if rumors about its R1 cancellation turn out to be true).

On a side note, I love Neko no Ongaeshi.

A recent post on the Animeondvd board said that Game Stop cancelled preorders for the title because the disc itself was canceled. There's been no other confirmation of this at this point, and it is notable that it is Game Stop doing this (not exactly the widest selection of anime there). It may just be for the chain.
