Beside teh name of those chosen schools are some uncomfortable letters: some are D and E, but no A and B. It's the prediction form of the National Mock Exam: it has been read for a few times since morning but it won't be changed anyway, so he------Kazama Shinji------can only sighs when staring at this piece paper of ugly results. He understands why he did badly in that mock exam: numerous not-yet-memorized English grammar forms, "thought that won't be asked and ignored but turns out to be lots" South American History, as well as "The Tale of Genji" (it's a real book BTW) as Ancient Language (which he seriously thinks they shouldn't use those stories about "Superiority of Love" from 1000 years ago to determine the life of a modern teenager). But it's still useless to hate the rules of this world as the results are everything: they're awful, and it's already the November of Senior Third.
Looking around the classroom of this Senior Third-Fourth Class (3-4 from now on) during this noon rest, he feels an atmosphere of exhausion: some are working hard for the exam, some are takign a nap, girls are reading resultsw of each other, while boys are just playing cards. Some of them have determined their future plans, but most of them are still undetermined. Uneasiness seems to tightened his body, since something bad are still troubling him that even a joke can make him laugh truly, as well as more than about the future------and such wind of loneliness are blowing among these former 2-4 students: Because of Chidori Kaname and Sagara Sousuke.
It's 10 months already since their disappearance from this school. Reporters outside of teh school were gone, maintanence of the building ended in summer, and after teh annual Cultural Festival and Sports Festival, the school becomes surprisingly quiet. No more explosions, no more loud scolds, no more screams, and no more roars through radio from Kagurazaka Eri (their class teacher). The ordinary school life returns to that before Sousuke came, but Hayashimizu Atsunobu (former chairman of the Student Union) had been graduated, and their headmistress had also been sent to another school. It didn't mean to make her bearing any responsibility, but after such a huge crisis it's impossible for her to stay. Even so, during the Graduation Service in March, she spoke with regret that she actually wanted to stay until their concerned friend returned, no matter how long it will be. Those words were actually farewell words to Chidori, as Shinji knows that "until they returned" is actually impossible, since that incident was more than just a simple kidnapping and hence too hard for Japanese police. Rumours were that Chidori was suspended from school indefinately since "she was involved in a case", and even she returns she'll probably start from Second Year (of which she'll miss her friends as they'll be graduating in a few months), so it's unknown if she'll stay in the school in that state. As for Sousuke, the words of his fake student status had been spread already, so his possibility of returning to school (which is already a strange thing) should be zero. But he can't erase Sousuke's oath in front of teh former 2-4 from the brain: "I'll bring her back". Is it really possible?
As a military fanatic, Shinji can somehow understand Sousuke's world: Army, Intelligence Agency, Terrorist Groups, etc, he knows them better than most Senior students about their large, cunning and strong presence. Against organizations, it's impossible for a single person to fight against (they need lots of supports). The name "Amalgam" that Sousuke mentioned, if it really exists, should be possessing horrifying large power since he knows nothing about this organization, not even the slight rumours among the streets. Against such a powerful and stealthy organization, no matter how hard Sousuke fights it won't be possible to find out where Chidori is------and from time to time, Shinji even thinks Sousuke may be dead already. During their summer holiday, he searched the internet for a slight trail of Sousuke's works, as he believed that if he was doing something big somewhere in the world, then he might find some hints about it (of course, he also wanted to escape from the coming exam by doing so), but nothing was found. It's obvious though, since those organization won't leak any info that can be found by an ordinary Senior student and his PC. But what if Sousuke is alive and keep searching for her? It's just a shame though------one is adventuring everyday, another is sighing for the results of the mock exam, Shinji even wants to laugh because of such a contrast.
Onodera Kotaro (Ono-D) sat in front of him and started talking about lunches (BTW, he's actually eating white breads from the bread shop) with him, then suddenly he takes Shinji's form and read it, saying that it's just horrible since it's filled of Es. Shinji says he should be the same, and as Kotaro says he's about to work harder, Shinji says that he spoke that since spring: he was caring about Tokiwa Kyoko around that time and didn't really study. Kotaro replies that Kyoko determined to make use of recommendations (even though she wanted to work in a toy complay before), and Shinji also realizes that she has been working hard after she left the hospital. In fact, it's Kotaro who visited her most frequently among the classmates, and Shinji had been visiting her with him as well, but comparatively it's Kotaro's pretended happy face more hurting. After she left the hospital she was able to promote and to be treated as with other classmates, but without Chidori she was getting closer with Kotaro. Still, from teh words of Kotaro, they're still not that kind of relation as others think------rumours are that they went to seaside together during summer holiday but "nothing happened", though it's unknown about the degree of truth within.
She was absent from school this morning in order to have a detailed check in the hospital. Though she didn't suffer from anything after being wounded, but words are that tips of her fingers on left hand may twitch uncontrollably from time to time, and if it's not physical sickness it'll be psychological problem. As they talked about her trauma as Kotaro shows signs of anger, before telling Shinji that she started to recall stuff during that incident (which shocks Shinji since she'll feel painful by hearing conversations with even a little linkage to that issue after she left the hospital), especially those about Sousuke: she recalled that he tried to save her, tried to diffuse the bomb on her even knowing it's a trap, but she said something cruel to him and regreted for it (and many other things) ever since.
Even Shinji knows that, whoever it is, those who captured Chidori and holding Kyoko hostage are a bunch of dangerous people, as they got hi-perfomance bombs around teh school complex, as well as that black AS which no military magazines mentioned (From HS: persumably Belial. BTW, though personally think Verial is a lots cooler name, I'll follow the official Japanese English names afterwards if possible, such as Verial->Belial, Eligor->Erigor)------but it's just a miracle that not a single person died, or it can be said that it's teh sole and hard work of Sousuke and that white AS. Even so, there're people who still hate him for dragging the school into danger, for example Kotaro (recalls the last scene of COMO?), and he didn't mention his name ever since. Shinji then tries to tell Kotaro his thoughts: Sousuke had been committed his strength fully for them. Kotaro denies (and the rejection looks being forced and childish), saying that he doesn't know anything about it, and he better vanishes earlier for hurting Kyoko because of his hidden stuff. But Shinji asks him if he wants to apologize to him like Kyoko, and when he denies, he asks him why he mentions about this issue------is it because his feelings are just the same? Kotaro loses his words and just answers he doesn't know. But in the end they don't know if they'll meet again anyway.......
After some more babbling between them, Kyoko comes into the classroom when teh rest nearly ends.
Her outfit changed recently (as seen in the pic, as well as having some simple makeups), and while she's still short, she looked more mature than before probably because of that incident had shadowed part of her happy face. Still, her personality retains largely the same as she greets Shinji and slaps Kotaro's shoulder. As they talk and play with each other the bell rings, and Shinji notices the boy who stared at his phone before, talking about something important to his friend: there seem to be a war coming. What's about that anyway? As teh teacher comes in (BTW, he's the one who spread the cloth-eating virus before) the Ancient Language lesson starts.
At that time Shinji thinks it'll just be boder conflicts in Middle East or Africa, but he'll need to deal with the Tales anyway. It's on the train when he's going back home he knows about this issue: reading the Extras that a man's reading, he starts to sweat about it, as this issue is more than just Africa's border problems,
but the two nations who're going to war are the two superpowers. The Western nations with America as teh lead, and Soviet Union as the spearhead of the Eastern nations are showing their nukes when they're facing a critical military crisis in Europe, Far East, Middle East, Arctic Ocean------at least it's what the news write, but it's no simple or joking stuff. The signs of the conflicts had been shown though, since there're continuous energy/food crises around the world, in addition to a large-scale financial crisis (......Gatoh, are you actually using the recent Financial Tsunami?) that the stock market drops to a low price as if once in a hundred years, and in Soviet Union there're Extreme Right parties shouted out threatening words that even got the support of the military. But even so their armies are still standing by and didn't fight, as if tehy're waving tehir knives at each other, though a mistake will lead them to an irreversable end.
Still, the atmosphere of peace is filled within the cabin, since it seems that no one feels uneasy towards the possible WW3 and teh subsequent loss of their ordinary life. It's too peaceful to be annoying. As he saw a student studying his stuff on the seat, he thinks that why he can still concentrate towards studying even his dream university may be destroyed in the future. Shinji suddenly feels taht he wants to talk with Sousuke telling him about his thoughts, and what will be a "crossing lines bwtween war and peace" person like him think when he sees such an atmosphere?
The clouds and shadows of war are spreading around the world.
The key to the future is given to those like Sousuke who're fighting unseen and unheard battles......
Teaser ends. The new and final book will be released in the coming spring.
