Why do you figure they took storyline cues from the movie?

We don't actually know, although English is a good bet. Although the languages may differ depending on which colony you are from. The Frontier Fleet speaks 3 languages, Chinese, Japanese and if I remember correctly, French.

On the other hand, every colony must learn Zentran. So if there is a very popular language spoken by most people, its gotta be Zentran.

As said before.... the scene we see at the beginning of the first episodes, showing Breetai holding Minmay, while Misa, Ikaru, Roy and Kaifun look on. That´s from DYRL, because neither Minmay, Kaifun or Roy were captured by the Zentraedi in the series.Which makes that aspect of the series un-canon.

Yeah, as I have mentioned before, DYRL is a supplement to the TV series, where certain aspects were revised. The 'canon' is best described as a hybrid of the two.

Since DYRL is a part of the Macross canon (as the movie within the series) it wouldn't be unusual for its 'soundtrack' to become mainstream. They probably even had Minmay sing the soundtrack for the film . And the image shown in Frontier...looking at it again it was the only 'stylized' still-frame shown. All other footage was animated (like the Zentradi fleet and attack on Earth). That being it could be just a 'movie poster' or some promotional image for the movie since, technically speaking, there would be no real footage of that scene (and they wanted something that included a greater number of the main cast like Roy).

I agree with Tak that the canon of Macross is the hybrid of the two (series + movie)

I think in flashback 2012, it already has scenes from series + movie anyway..plus I remember the director said, if you want to explain the whole story in 90 minutes, then it would be like the movie, and if you want to describe the story in other format then it would be portrayed like the TV series?? (something like that)

Regarding how Macross F will look like in the future, i guess it will depend on the success of the movie...if the movie is very successful, then the canon will be a hybrid, if the movie is not that successful, then the canon will be TV only

Anyway the TV series of Macross F will not be forgotten, that's why the directors made the TV series ending a triangular one so both sides of the fans can always go back to the series and call it a canon in case any side of the fans doesn't like the movie ending so relax everyone

See, I could by Chinese and Japanese, but French? Do we see anything written in French other than Sheryl's note to Grace? We do see a lot of English though. This would, of course, fit with my assumed culture mix of Macross City and the survivors on the SDF-1 and thus the dominant cultural influences in the New United Nations at large.

Of course, it probably does vary by colony a lot. I'll bet they didn't speak much Chinese on Macross 5.

Ok so like me get this right, they used the updated visuals and designs of DYRL as canon but not the story elements which are used as a fictional retelling(DYRL) of elements from SDF-1 as fictional canon for their own in fiction fiction(DYRL is a movie in the macross universe )?

No wonder it can be hard to tell whats what sometimes. :P

Again, it depends on which specifics are you talking about. If you mean the visuals, then its definitely DYRL, that alongside the Meltrans being their own faction are also part of the canon. For others, be more specific.

If you think this is confusing... hell, don't go further, because I have not even gotten started on the TWO separate timelines in the Macross universe...

Ok a better question is what is cannon DRYL Roy's death or SDF-1?
Was Lisa/Ichigo lost on a ancient city on earth or did they surive off a crashed earth ship?

Basically the main plot points, I do believe Exedore was micloned and looked human but deiced to return to being a full Zentradi, alot of the plot elements seemed to be changed to account for DYRL's dickery with the story line.

I don't care what you call it like the whole Klingon mutation thing its a contrived plot point to exacerbate "cinergy", it dose not always make things bad its just a shallow sticking point that could have been handled better. =^^=

No, the ending was the way it was, because Kawamori wanted to do his original ending for the TV series, which was denied to him back then.

I still count the TV as the real story and everything extra as poor atemps at trying to change it for no good reason. :P
