Cooking is not always about following recipes and going by what a book says. Just ask any
grandmother: you go by how you feel. And then there are times when you just want to mess
around and make something strange and bizarre, but delicious. In this case, by placing several
strips of thick-cut bacon on a baking pan and covering each stip with a liberal coating of brown
sugar and cinnamon, then baking in a 350 degree (Fahrenheit) oven for about twenty minutes,
one would produce a truly decadent treat.

We join Kevin in a kitchen, carefully peeling the finished products off the trays. Moving them
while they were still hot was crucial, lest the melted and caramelized sugar harden and stick to
the tray and foil lining.

Suddenly, a wild Nanoha appears! Attracted by the curiously sweet and savory scents, the
young girl dashed up to the counter, right next to the cook. “Ne ne, Kei-chan! What are you
making?”

“Candied bacon,” Kevin didn’t look up from his efforts, carefully peeling away a strip. He
placed it on a tray covered in paper towels, along with a small pile of similarly finished protein.

Nanoha blinked, unsure if she heard right, “Candied what?!”

“Candied bacon,” Kevin replied calmly, peeling another piece off.

“How do you even make that?!” Nanoha stuck out her tongue in the universal sign of disgust.

“Brown sugar. Cinnamon. Bacon. Bake until delicious.”

Despite herself, little Nanoha couldn’t help but feel rather curious about the foodstuff. Bacon
was certainly a rare, if deliciously unhealthy part of breakfast (usually it was sausage, if anything),
and the thought of it coated in a sticky-sweet shell was… intriguing to say the least. “… Can I try?”

“Sure,” he shrugged, pointing to a nearby filled plate. “Help yourself.”

Nanoha peeled off one of the sugar-coated strips, staring at its dark red color. It certainly
smelled like bacon, but its appearance was something between candy apple and cooked, well,
bacon. Unsure, she broke off a small piece and placed it in her mouth.

Sweet, indeed, with a slight warmth from the cinnamon. The first taste wasn’t as bad as she
expected. Biting into it, the salty-smoky flavors of the bacon mingled with the sweetness of the
candy coating. The fat added a peculiar richness, a mouthfeel like good chocolate, yet nothing
like it. Simultaneously savory and sweet, Nanoha was at first unsure if it this was a good or a
great thing.

And the more she ate, the more she wanted.

“How is it?” Kevin asked, finally looking at the girl.

Nanoha looked up, a third strip hanging out of her mouth.

Stars in her eyes.

The light was way too bright. "Nnngh... Turn off the sun." He mumbled, wishing that he hadn't gone out last night.

"About time you got up." A familiar voice spoke to him. Oddly enough, it was rather soft and mellow. Which was odd for the person the voice belonged to. Cracking an eye open and grimacing at the light that bombarded his face, he looked at the amused face. "Well, at least you're alive."

He blinked several times before looking down and his face flushed. "Um... How come you're not wearing anything?"

"I'm wearing my panties, you dummy." She rolled her eyes and sat up. "If you're curious, I found you at one of my usual haunts, stone drunk and bitching about the lack of a love life."

"How come you're so... Calm?" He yelped when she dropped a fist on his head. "Oww!"

"First of all, I got a pleasant buzz last night, so I'm pretty calm when I wake up after getting those last night." She reached a hand up and scratched her head. "Anyway, you ended up nearly passing out, so I dragged your sorry butt back to your apartment."

"...So, why are you almost naked?"

Her face was red and a slightly annoyed look came to her face. "You realize how annoying it is to sleep in normal clothes? Especially since you're like a clingy radiator. Seriously, do you NEED to grip so hard?" She rubbed her side to emphasize her point. "Anyway, I didn't want you to drown in your own vomit if something happened." When he smiled she frowned and kneed him in the chest, forcing him off of her. "Don't look into it too much. I just couldn't face our friends if I let you die like that."

"Still, thanks." He smiled and sat up.

"You pervert!" She yelped and pointed at his crotch. "You got turned on when I hit you, didn't you?!"

"No! It's only natural for..." He trailed off at the dark look on her face. "...What?"

"Oh, so I'm the kind of girl that turns you on, Yuuno?"

He shook his head. "That's not what I meant. It's morning, and blood pumps down there to every guy in the morning." As his mind cleared, something occured to him. "Um... You're still topless..."

She rolled her eyes and stretched. "Yeah, so? You're only in your boxers and I HAD to get out of my clothes. Between the way you move around when you're drunk and how hot you made the bed last night, I needed to get out of those clothes." Besides, she didn't have any other clothes to sleep in. "I would have left you alone, but you wouldn't let go last night and I wasn't in the mood to pound you."

"Well, uh, thanks, Vita." Yuuno chuckled as he turned away from her as she got out of bed.

Vita just shook her head at him. Oh well, Yuuno was kind of cute in the morning. She blinked and nearly slapped her forehead. Since when did she think like that? 'Must be some alcohol from last night still in my system.'

What can I say? I was in a weird mood.

2. Written after I read the little discussion about Nanoha/Fate approving of the relationship, some pages ago - mainly because I actually thought that Nanoha would be the one (and was most suitable) to scribble that list of groceries and prod Hayate to make the first move, contrary to what some others who had read it thought; hence the short companion piece.
3. Talking doesn't automatically mean getting into a relationship, though, so I hope I managed to describe her concerns and motivation for doing so well here.
4. Had a bit of trouble padding out Vivio's part - in regards to what Nanoha thinks about how Hayate will (and has) affect Vivio. I think it has something to do with me not being a parent, hence the glossing over on that part. At this point, some thoughts or ideas for that particular part would be great.

Interesting addition. Thought I find the reason for Nanoha do that to be believable enough, I still think that the problem wasn't with the note itself, but with the prodding as the other see it. The reasoning between the two I see as normal, but what the people from outside see, Vivio and Hayate included, vary to much.

That's one of the reasons I like stories where the so called 'Hero' doesn't improve much through the course of the story. 'Remote' was one maga that I remember doing this nicely, but the artwork was a major letdown.

This story was inspired by an exchange between RadiantBeam and deathcurse concerning possible plots to get Vivio involved in Lutecia's Shadow world. One of them mentioned how she definitely didn't want to do the "Vivio kidnapped by Lutecia's enemies" cliché, and the other noted how most likely Vivio would just break out on her own if that happened. Then deathcurse mentioned the scenario of Vivio showing up late for their date with a spiel of excuses about the kidnapping...and I made the mistake of mentioning that I thought it would make a good fic. They both turned on me and intimated that the person who thinks up such ideas ought to be willing to answer the request.


And hey, I've been itching for the chance to show off the Shadowverse-version Saint's Armor for a while, so that was a bonus for me, too!


As a technological note, I observe that despite the entire area being under AMF, Jail Scaglietti's base had functional communication screens (including the big one where he foolishly allowed Erio and Caro to do the cheer-up speech for Fate), so that is my inspiration for letting a screen pop up in Vivio's jail cell.

Ok. Wow. I feel like I just watched a James Bond/Shonen anime episode. Nice.

It felt rather contradictory that Fate dashed out the house to this important meeting then when she got there she went absent minded. Of course, she could really be, seeing the situation at her home, but I feel like she wouldn't outright ignore the guy for five minutes as he said.

Another thing was the way Nanoha's parents acted. The cloning technology is widely discussed and the procedure is somewhat known on Earth nowadays, so it struck me as odd that they didn't know that it could be done. Of course, in your case, I think you meant for something like a real child by two mothers, using their combined genetic material instead of a real clone, but I don't think that Nanoha's parents would understand that way in the beggining. If it was explained further down the road to them what really happened, I think it would be interesting too, but nothing you need to change here.

I thought that the end lacked a little impact. Maybe a little more addition on the portrayal of Nanoha's reaction would be interesting. And maybe a little of Fate's inner thoughts about the situation too.

Aside from this, I really want to know how did Jail managed to escape. *-*

Resurrecting yui shall be a team effort . Can't help you with the chiropractor or the alcohol (importing fees are steep! ). Ficcys I can provide, as long as school essays don't slay me first . For a picture of Lutecia in full Rider-hotness in a cocktail dress? Totally worth it .

It's tough not to replicate other people's supporting cast names . I'd say that we should all make a list of the names of the random OCs that we've used as mooks in our fics, but I fear that it might overlap with the OC thread's purpose . But it would be nice to see which car names have been snapped up already.

Heck, I just got bit in that last fic when I gave Tobias the same name as Micaiah from ViVid, so I had to change it while editing. I'd like to see a list of car names used in canon...and a raw list of cars to mine. I don't care so much about not reusing names other people have used (except in Shadowverse stories, since they all take place in the same continuity and I wouldn't want to imply that some random OC was related to, say, Miranda).

(GrimGrimoire alcohol theme naming is actually worse, but the smaller size of canon and smaller size of the fandom keeps the problems down there.)

I already know that a major character of mine in The Collared, whom we'll be seeing in the next chapter, shares a last name with one from Crime Never Sleeps. =X

I had to seek out a name for a minor character (also for that chapter) and it's tedious going through Wikipedia's list of car brands and models.

Very true, since most of us aren't writing OCs to be main characters anyway, it's doubtful that anyone would notice. Although I did sort of shoot myself in the foot by using a cool name like "Gallant" for an important character in CNS, which means that I can't use that name for any other kick-ass character I may want it for (probably a villain ).

(LOL, speak for yourself, as the one who used the most names already --every time I name a character I go re-read your fics to check that I haven't reused any of yours! )

I just went to wiki and picked one that sounded foreign, since the character herself is. The name sort of grew on me.

Oh, I wouldn't even dare try to do something like what canon did with Subaru's name. It's hard enough just finding a car name that makes a better character name than "Jeep Grand Cherokee" without trying to give them deeper meaning.

For me the problem was more of getting a culture appropriate vehicle name. Belka is magical Medieval Germany and Midchilda, magical Medieval England, but what if we want to expand the world and have a character being from outside the canonical fantasy counterpart culture? Finding car names that sounds Russian, Arabic, Chinese etc that still sounds like a name a parent would give their children is just too much work for me

Hell, I had to look for middle eastern-ish sounding names. I tried the Persian "Khodro" from the Iranian companies, up until I translated it and found out it meant "Automotive". So I went looking for car names from India...

The clones are all Ferraris? *pauses to look up Vivio* Okay, so at least she's not one...but looking at the Wikipedia entry on the Subaru Vivio gave me an idea for if somebody made another clone in her series; she could be named Pleo.
