The fuck? Can they sink any lower than that?
Also, $50 million estimate on opening weekend? Assuming the vast majority of critics stay far away from this movie, I seriously doubt it. And if it does, I definitely want to get off this rock asap. Or strangle someone, whichever comes first.

Looking at the release schedules, GB2016 is going to get mauled in its opening weekend by The Secret Life of Pets in its second week.

The skeptics are screwed either way, now that I think about it.
If it succeeds, the people involved will say that 'girl power' has prevailed, and that it's time for women to take the spotlight, after which they'll announce a sequel (which, if other sequels ar anything to go by, will probably be even worse). If it flops, the amount of racism, sexism, and other accusations that get thrown around will be through the roof, to the point where every mainstream media outlet will probably cry wolf about it.

I'd say $40M is the top end of what I'd expect it to get opening weekend, which would probably be proffered as a wild success, even though it will probably be dipping under the daily take of at least one of its tepid competitors by the next weekend, at which point all media discussion of it will disappear if Star Trek Beyond does any kind of business. It won't make back its budget (~$150M, I believe). It's pretty clear that Sony expects this to bomb, or else every news article would be talking about the movie, and not about how everyone who has misgivings about the premise or what they've seen in the trailers is a "whiny misogynist".
