Tell us everything you know about Versus

The game centered about death, ghosts and hallucination/dreams. Noctis killed the female protagonist before the game started but he didn't remember. Ardyn was Noctis ancestor and he was responsible of the crystals disappearing over time (the only one left was Lucis crystal). Regis died in front of Noctis because his bodyguards betrayed him. The protagonists had to leave the capital because their nation lost the war.

The game didn't focus on summons that much (they still existed) and instead there were actual gods which didn't appear physically. One of the gods was the main antagonist of the first FF game. Each nation was inspired by a different capital of the world. The empire was using ghosts as weapons. Ravus wanted to kill Noctis for having killed her sister. The game ended in another dimension which was supposed to be their version of the after-life.

It's hard to remember every detail.

I can understand how a lot of people might not like the ending. I for one loved it, much better than how XIII ended up as. It feels in fact very similar to FFX, probably the last FF I actually loved.

For that I'm actually thinking it's time for me to pick up Type-0.

Just absolutely loving this but sadly just haven't had the time to get stuck in, can manage like 30 mins before I go to work for some hunting and gathering.

And also I had been playing UC4 and wanted to get that finished before I really got into this.

I didn't mind the ending. I did mind the very incoherent pacing to the story and very apparent rushed/cut content after Chapter 8. tldr; it is a fun game, but pales in comparison with games that have done the open world genre better. Before anyone chides me that X or Y is explained in the added content like Brotherhood, let me say that I'm not interested. I didn't need to play Crisis Core or watch Advent Children to love/understand FF7.

The story begins quite well, with a lot of promise. We're introduced to a band of brothers, with a beautiful song. The opening bit of content helps us familiarize ourselves a bit with the anticipated gameplay, but begins to stumble. Who was Noctis' kingdom fighting? Why? How long? Does thsi area owe allegiance to any of those nations or none at all? We might get some pieces of this by listening to the radio, but strangely the radio is only available if I stop adventuring and just click a button. Why wouldn't they put the radio in the car for those long roadtrips? This seems like a poor oversight and something that would have been very simple to provide as a "station" alternative to the soundtracks of past games.

Noctis shows almost no emotion when his father and kingdom fall. We get only a somewhat sullen response, completely contrasting the way he reacts when Luna dies later on. His reaction to her death is very frustrating as a roleplayer, particularly as you are given the character agency to reply in an ambivalent way to her letters via Umbra. He never lashes our or breaks down that his father and his kingdom have fallen; we don't get a sense of "revenge" plot since the game swiftly turns to an open world. They seriously misjudged this pacing.

A more appropriate mechanic would have been; our young prince sets off to marry this young girl from a strange land. The ferry isn't working, so alas Noctis and team must take the long route. Of course, Noctis isn't that thrilled about the concept of marriage. It is more thrilling to just see the world and travel; living out the dreams of being away from the responsibility of the crown with his best friends. As they wander this side of the world, however, they see the devastation caused by this war. Perhaps cities occupied by Niflheim and the citizens suffering from monster attacks. Strangely, the nights seem to be getting longer and day by day, more hunters fall. Soon Noctis realizes he has to live up to his responsibilities and travels to marry.

It is then that everything falls apart. His kingdom and father are slain. Luna dies before his very eyes. In an instant, everything he once held dear is torn away from him. Now, without allies, the vengeful young prince sets off to relciam the armaments of his ancestors while waking the ancient Gods to beseech their aid. His friends become increasingly worried about his obsession for revenge, concerned that the very power of the Gods he is gathering is too destructive. Too dangerous. A rift begins to form. Ardyn manipulates Noctis to lash out at his friends, driving a wedge between them until Noctis is alone and vulnerable. He realizes that all this power is for nothing unless he has his friends beside him, blah, blah, blah.

My point is, the actual story of this game is shorter than the time it took Cloud to get out of Midgar or Terra to defend Narshe and the esper. This open world mechanic is no revelation either. Plenty of games have done it more masterfully (e.g, Witcher 3, Fallout, Skyrim). There are weird, nonsensical cut scenes and characters introduced without purpose. We have this cut to the Emperor and his minions... and that is the last we see of them. We have this scene of Noctis soloing an Empire base and seemingly without his friends. Who is the old man and why am I sad that he died? Hell, the crew reacted more to that than the King dying. None of these scenes add or lead up to anything in the game. Don't get me started on the train. The ending isn't all that wonderful when you realize how simplistic the emotional strings it is using. The brotherly love angle of tough guys weeping, star crossed lovers separated in death to be reunited in the afterlife. Hell, even implied that his best friends died as well. They could have thrown in his dog dying just to really rub it in.

The gameplay itself is also frustrating. I experienced very frequent stuttering on my PS4, making enjoying the scenery of the world quite challenging. The camera and controls were awful. In order to target an enemy I have to HOLD a target button? So trying to simultaneously target an enemy, move behind them, and rotate the camera so I can keep them in my field of view, pressing an attack button. Use the ATB system and if I warp to a safe space I have to hold a defense button or it keeps pausing on me? Ugh. Why not just let me press pause? Why does it even have a stupid timer? Combat became an exercise in frustration, especially in narrow corridors. The level pacing of enemies was just insane. One minute I'm finding something my level, then I experience a never ending rain of Empire soldiers in one area because I can't find this mineral that some dude needs. Literally once I defeated one group, another spawned. I experienced my own personal version of hell in Costlemark Castle, as it combined by terrible level balancing with terrible design. Unless you can somehow figure out the secret of that moving block puzzle, you can literally trap yourself in an unwinnable battle unless you are over-leveled and can lose hours of work. Not to mention the simple idiocy of creating a dungeon filled with Level 7 monsters only to have a Level 53 boss insta-wipe you.

It is clear that Square had some grandiose ideas that failed them, over and over again. They had far too much time to polish out the very foundations of an RPG, but couldn't do so. While I want to enjoy this game, all i see is missed opportunity after missed opportunity. If I want to experience the magic of a FF game that I loved, I'll replay FF6/7/8/9 before I touch this one. If you want to compare this against a great open world RPG with an amazing story - stick with the Witcher. To SquareEnix, I'm afraid you still haven't figured out what made those old games magical.

After several hours of the game, I'm done. I cannot stand the combat system. It absolutely infuriates me. Idiotic teammates whose constant deaths punish me, the player, and a complete lack of tells from the enemy. Garbage. As much as I want to continue to see the story through I can't bring myself to spend one more second having to participate in the combat.

I don't know about you but my party AI is pretty good and there are, actually tells. Not very obvious so it doesn't make the combat too easy.

And because the Crystal gave up the rest of its power to Noctis, it could no longer ward off the daemons and the night.


They strangely never tell you what happened to Iris, but Gladio, Prompto, and Ignis just work with the Hunters to fend off the daemons while waiting for Noctis to come back.

Actually, according to Talcott on the way to the Hammerhead bastion, Iris is assisting in the relief effort against the daemons, but that's, to my knowledge, all we know about her. Cindy, same situation with Iris, though she was noted to be less cheerful post-timeskip.

Been playing this game since it was out... haven't finished it yet. But I had to say this, the "Cleigne Battle Theme" is, IMO, one of the best battle music I have ever heard in an RPG.

It is as beautiful as it is hopeful.

I was so moved by it, I stopped fighting enemies and just ran around them doing nothing just to keep hearing this masterpiece.
