I can't blame Hanne for his decision there. It's one thing to say something great or even intend to do something noble, but when the time comes have to make a decision about what you can do and what you can't. With really only training and facing a giant monster 1v1, yeah running is the only real option to take. Think at that moment he really understood that comment about the people there living like livestock. Not exactly easy after living like that for so long to actually stand and fight. And if he died....good luck to the kids getting out of there alive.
My condolences to the mother though. That is definitely not a preferable way to go. Will say I like the idea behind the combat. Need a way to gain some advantage over some giants and if used correctly can make themselves a lot harder to keep an eye on.

jokes aside
This is a wonderful adaptation, with as much if not more love as how Davids Production adapted JJBA. I really like the improved artstyle, the music, the OP, the atmosphere. Everything was carried out as lovely as I wanted if not better. Phenomenal opener, definitely a keeper

Might have been the better thing to do. But when you decide on the flight response over the fight response...you just run.

On the topic of the limited viewing, I got serious "made for western audiences" vibes from this anime, something I haven't felt in a very long time. It's peculiar they'd limit streaming, but I doubt it's over the violence. There has to be a marketing reason. On the topic of the show itself.....this is god tier. I cannot believe this is just the first episode of an anime. The production value is through the roof. If it weren't for a few budget saving moments, someone could have passed this off as a high budget movie/OVA and I would have believed them. It's also a very solid adherence to the look, feel, and script of the manga. Considering the rough lines the author liked to use, the choice of bolded outlines really works here. Voice acting could use some improvement, but....spoilers! I'll stop here lest I blab too much. Incredible, just incredible.

Man, as adaptations go, that was pretty damn fantastic. I had though it would be "meh" since I've read the manga, but they did such a good job that even though I know what's going to happen, I still found myself totally sucked in.
It's definitely the best looking show of this season (so far). The only quibble I had was he should have mercy killed the mother. How many episodes is this? Trying to get a handle on how much of the manga this is going to adapt. Edit: Someone looks to have said it's 2-cour. So, excited.

That was so intense! Everything became uneasy rather quickly when the recon soldiers returned, and there was that scene with Moses' mother - all of that was a good lead-up to the titans' breaking up the wall and invading the town.
Looks like Eren has a much stronger motivation to join the recon now; his mother's death was horrible, and definitely very painful to watch. I'm actually glad that Hannes chose to flee from the giant with Eren and Mikasa instead of charging it head-on and simply sacrificing himself, as what happens in most anime. For a first episode, this made a very good impression on me. Bring on the next one! Quote:

I was expecting a lot just from the trailers, but not only did the first episode deliver those expectations it blew them trough the roof ... shows like this remind me why i am still watching anime adn give me a hope for the future in this Moe infested world
a PERFECT first episode, from the animation quality, to the OP to the perfect depressing / utterly bleak world |

What I like about this story is how they presented the sense of helplessness very early. That scene with the grieving mother and the captain just leaves so much impact. They are fairly useless right now and they know it themselves.

Can we quit the subforum whining? Also it's not like every anime needs a subforum and imo some discussions have been for the worse once everything was split up, having a "megathread" is a good thing at times... but hey I guess "my fav anime got a subforum and yours didn't" epeen is alive and well.

Some people wanna call this Magi 2.0, but swapping out a hack like Yoshino for Yasuko makes a big difference, she also did Claymore which was a great adaptation until they had to go with an original end, but the first 20 episodes was done right. |
