Manga/Anime/VN/LN/Whatever that you know first through Doujins?
From time to time, its not unusual for people in the "Upcoming Series" section commenting that they know the new series from Doujins. Its amazing how doujins can be a great medium of further advertisement to wider audience.
e.g., recently for me it was Dagashi Kashi and Oshiete Galko-chan. Looking back, its actually quite surprising, that the fact is also true for myself. It went really, really long way back: for instance, I read Bleach doujin first before I even touch it in paper. So, back to the title: What Manga/Anime/VN/LN/Whatever that you know first through Doujins? And I'm quite sure, that some of us don't even bothered read/watch the original work, but keep an eye on the doujins of them for some of their...fascinating elements. |

I know more about Kantai Collection than I would have ever cared to know due to its outrageous bandwagoning of talented artists.
Hell, even my current MAL profile pic is a boatgirl whom I've never seen in the game since I don't play it and never seen animated since I haven't watched the anime. Yet I like her a lot because the drug-like effects of the KanColle fandom craze is sucking my soul in like a black hole. Last edited by Tempester; 2015-12-31 at 21:58. |

Not really doujin, but a bit related. I pretty much knew Neon Genesis Evangelion, the TV Series/Death and Rebirth/EoE, inside and out pretty much through fanfiction alone (aka written doujins). I have forgotten most of the details, but if you asked me in early 2000's what happened in a episode, I would've been able to elaborate pretty much the entire thing. The amount of info you can glean from fanfiction back then was actually astonishing, as a lot of authors were very big sticklers to sticking up to a certain part of canon (and they will tell you up to where), and the community as I recall were very vocal against children that were written OOC (so you get the personality). So I was so enamoured with NGE that I knew everything about it, even without even seeing a single episode.
Ironically, when I actually got to watch the TV series mid-2000s with the advent of easily accessible broadband, I thought it was boring and helluva overrated. (Well that, and JP VA of Asuka was just goddam terrible at German) I couldn't believe I thought that was the holy grail of anime, and only later it was pointed out by my friend I pretty much 'spoiled' AND 'thoroughly dissected' everything beforehand that my view of the anime has been skewed. One of the big reasons why I avoid source material/fanworks of any upcoming anime, or what looks like anime worthy titles if I'm a few chapters in.

Does this include fanarts?
Kancolle and Touken Ranbu like most people I suspect. There's also Sekaijuu no Meikyuu and recently Granblue Fantasy. I'm proud to say I actually originally knew Touhou from their shmup games and not their doujins.

Huzzah to shojo anime, manga and fanworks. Even during my more "hipster" or "hater" days shojo based works were the reason why i could never dislike moe. Talking about shojo style fanworks been obsessed with honeyworks lately particularly the sana covers. Pretty much the new age supercell in popularity prior to them going mainstream. |

Another one who has never actually played Kantai Collection or watched the anime, or played any of the Touhou games for that matter, but has become aware of it thanks to the massive amount of fanart and doujinshi.
For me though, there are some fan artists that I like don't get me wrong, but as for doujinshi, I mostly view either to laugh at the hilariously bad dialogue and the "(insert part of human, typically anatomy) doesn't work like that!" moments. For that reason, I typically look at stuff I'm familiar with, thinking "do your worst, just try and shock me!" Typically, they fail to. |
