Very CLAMP-ish character designs.

Episode 1:

This first episode is impressive. Even the OP song is pretty decorative and colorful.

I got a slight rakugo vibe although the music and art is is quite different. The setting takes place in the modern times and a school life setting. The character designs looks consistent while I like the general set up of the storytelling.

The character cast is okay so far. The MC is a bit talkative but his personality makes him easy to make friends. Good episode so far, really liked the way this started.

That's promising, OK, yet another high school club show, but at least it's out of the ordinary and that sets it apart from the rest. Liked all the characters so far as well, had to laugh at the chuuni guy who fancies himself as a singer but the band are totally unimpressed.

Good start, interested to see how it goes.

Ep 01

Okay ... that was a pretty interesting premier as well. I am a sucker for series that focus on older art forms from Japan, and I like the male lead who is trying to form the club. Actually a pretty strong and cool headed individual (though not invulnerable - as shown in the drama club girl who grew up in the karate dojo, and the son of the dance instructor) who knows about and genuinely likes the art form. Kinda refreshing, actually.

I also find myself liking all the characters though ... a good start, and am definitely interested to try out more episodes.

Good first episode. Focus on Kabuki definitely made me curious, but I was afraid it will turn into sausages fest. Fortunately there seems to be fair share cute girls around (though Kaouru did made my asexuality question itself for few moments).

It should be fun.

Well, Kunisaki Izumo this is not, unfortunately. Also unfortunately it's kind of nondescript and bland. :/ Maybe it's better in book form...

Enthusiastic boy with a dream is trying to make fetch happen, will obviously succeed eventually. Except, so far it's all very by-the-numbers, with very bland visuals. The characters are not particularly interesting (although, Akutsu, you're like 20 years too late with that music :O ), the direction is boring, the staging is uninspired... Also, it's one thing when the "club thing of the day" is something like parkour or shogi or whatever, but kabuki is just... exceedingly difficult? I mean, the poor seiyuu. Ichikawa's recitals were just terrible - and sure, I guess it's exactly how "average guy trying to recite kabuki" would sound but that doesn't mean I'd want to listen to it.

But now I'm kind of curious if any of the other seiyuu are better so I guess I'll be back next week. Maybe. Going by the promo image Ichikawa's character will be a kuroko anyway so perhaps the other seiyuu have been cast on the basis of being better at doing kabuki.

Well, you can't have Koichi Yamadera and Akira Ishida for every show about arts, can you?
Not to mention that this show probably doesn't even have budget high enough to hire them for main roles.

It's not that, really. Rakugo is a performing art that requires great skill, sure, but it's still "just" speaking and acting. Even as a seiyuu you can pull it off if you have enough acting talent. But reciting kabuki (since in this case they're just providing the voice) is fundamentally different. There's more to it than just speaking with a funny/dramatic intonation, it's a skill that takes a lot of training and practice. Veteran seiyuu may have the experience and skills to pull it off even if they were never trained in this sort of acting, but I'm sure that even for them it would be difficult to get it right. It's like, you can sing solo in a world-famous choir but that still doesn't mean you're able to sing opera.

You are jumping to conclusion. We don't know yet what are seyuu capable of yet. What you are judging is on spot performance by character who likely doesn't have much actual experience done while sitting on the chair.

Well, that is why I had said this:

Ichikawa is a total rookie, but the seiyuu for the other characters are certainly very capable, and I'm sure they did at least some training (the credits list a kabuki supervisor). So I'm curious how they'll fare.

Hmm ... I still have mixed feelings with the overall result being evoked in me here, even while kinda enjoying the series overall? It's an odd thing to experience.

Will keep at it for the moment....

The second episode worked better for me then the first. I liked the snippets on Kabuki history, and it was nice that Jin's grandfather ended up saying something similar to what Kuro told him earlier. And poor Hana chan, just wants to play the woman, and his mind keeps telling him yes, but his body keeps telling him no. >_> OK, I'll see myself out now.
