I'm just hoping that it's not as boring as 6 was. There were so many ground target missions, barely any decent air-to-air combat. Ace Combat Zero spoiled me.

If anything, it reminds of a volume in the Buck Danny series (Belgian comics), titled Ghost Squadron (L'escadrille fantôme in French).

Spoiler for Ghost Squadron story:

Basically, somewhere around 1993-1995 during the Yugoslav wars, NATO rounds up pilots from member countries that have landed in hot waters (disobedience, unauthorized actions and anything that resulted in a costly, career-halting accident) and transfers them to a secret base somewhere near Greece, to train them for a Black Ops mission meant to break the Serbian encirclement around Sarajevo. In order to blur their tracks, the Ghost Squadron's standard issue fighter jet is an unmarked F-16 Fighting Falcon, which was at the time the most popular (read: widespread) fighter jet in the world.

Problem is: so as to maintain absolute plausible deniability for the US and other NATO forces involved in the planning and execution of this covert operation, NO ONE in the patrolling UNProFor is warned about this ghost squadron (which means the GS pilots could be shot at by their own countrymen) and the ejection seats on the F-16s have been disabled (so that the GS pilots cannot be taken prisoner and interrogated by the Bosnians and Serbians). When the F-16s and the "Dirty Dozen" pilots finally take off for the mission, they are not only facing Serbian-aligned mercenaries but also NATO/UN fighters seeking to maintain the status quo above Sarajevo (in the comic, they're actually misled into believing the Ghost Squadron is trying to bomb the city instead of breaking the Serbian encirclement). When the GS pilots come back to base after successfully completing their objectives, their records are stripped clean and they're reinstated in their respective air forces.

Man, Brownie's death was pretty heart-wrenching - you typically don't feel that sort of emotion, maybe awe or excitement, but not that sort of gut terror - that soundtrack is amazing. It's a shame considering other games like Zero had a bunch of pilots survive being shot down.

Still, it really set up the antagonist as being a fearsome one.

Got this the other day, and incredible happy it feels like an Ace Combat game again. After Assault Horizon I was a little apprehensive, but pleasantly surprised they've went back to the tried and tested formula.

Only a few missions in so far, but its got everything I love about the series at this point. I'm not overly fond of the plane tech tree aspect, but its not a massive gripe overall.

I wonder if any single player content is planned, apart from skins etc.

Yes, this is truly a good Ace Combat game, specially after the sour taste that 6 left in my mouth.
Hoping for more single player support and challenges for the game, S-Ranking everything on Ace wont be as hard as the previous games, but its stil pretty fun!

At least unlike me, you're not coming from Assault Horizon and its dogfight mode Skies Unknown genuinely is the Ace Combat experience I've been looking for, and on PC, it handles extremely well. It's high praise when I say they've taken everything good about the old PS2 games and then modernised them: Dogfight mode took the fun out of dogfights, so it was incredibly satisfying to get to experience the gameplay of old again.

I ended up buying the standard version for PC: if the Falken is in the DLC, I'll consider it

AC7 feels like playing the older AC games, definitely better than Assault Horizon in everyway, and I'm having a lot of fun with it. All those years of wainting weren't for nothing.
As for the DLC planes it would be great if we could have the Morgan, Shinden II and X-49 Night Raven or Fenrir.

I have the game, but have yet to play it. Unlike the lot of you, I actually liked Assault Horizon. It was certainly better than Ace Combat 6, which is what I hold up as the weakest of the group I've played, since it was 90% shooting rockets at the ground and one memorable air fight, memorable only because of how fucking annoying it was. Ace Combat 6 was pretty, but that's about all it had going for it.

From what I've seen of 7, it blows 6 out of the water. I'm hoping it'll play as great as it looks.
